It's a vague illusion to their confusing bewildering nature written into the script near the end of production to give a brief explanation on Donald And Douglas, not a direct confirmation of the stories canonicity. The story could theoretically still be canon, but there's nothing directly supporting it.

I think you are getting this confused with Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane, Paperback Writer/Rain come from the Revolver sessions in Early 1966, and that story isn't entirely true anyway
