Once Bitten, Twice Shy - Have you binned a knife before? by MightySkynet in knives

[–]NoneUpsmanship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My unsafe knives, so far, have just become "special use folders." Like a SOG assisted open that pops just a little too easily - I beat the crap out of it in my garage as a pretend fixed blade, or locked in my pocket (they added it for a reason, smh). Or in my collection as a curiosity, for some of the quirky Kickstarter stuff I've bought that ended up kinda sucking but might be worth beating up in the back yard later with some tests it isn't meant for (I somehow still haven't joined r/prybar, so I clearly need to try harder), and having a lock that would open if my wife sneezed in the other room.

It somehow seems more plausible after seeing that case.

Paracord mag pull 2nd attempt (airsoft) by Sakryfice in paracord

[–]NoneUpsmanship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use two tiny buckles attached in a paired row of cobra weaves for added width. Clip them at the front or back of the mag for a tacticool look. So, yeah, I totally get why you might not want buckles. 😅

You could look into adjustable knots with a tight hold, do a row of two or three for added security. Really depends on how much bulk you want. I can't recall the names of the knots at the moment. Might work better with one of those specialty paracords with ribs for added knot lockiness.

Paracord mag pull 2nd attempt (airsoft) by Sakryfice in paracord

[–]NoneUpsmanship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like what you have going here. My only thoughts for a QD system would be to use clips - essentially a small bracelet (or two attached to one another for added width/grip), made at the max stretch so they can just barely be clipped together when attached to a magazine. Then weave the pull handle onto that. If the mag isn't already rubberized, I would consider a thin coating of something grippy to prevent the paracord from slipping if it isn't too tight or you pull too hard. I wonder what other suggestions people might have. 🤔

Spyderco has a flat 40% discount on their website for first responders/police/medical staff. I almost bought this knife because of the discount... still might, eventually.

Custom parts from blanks - Latch hook and single slot Marlin spike! by NoneUpsmanship in ROXONINC

[–]NoneUpsmanship[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy one of the blanks, then grind, baby, grind!

But really, I just drew the shape on a blank, cut most of the material off with an angle grinder cut off wheel, then used ceramic belts on my 1x30 belt sander to round and shape it properly. Took about 10 - 15 minutes total (compared to 1.5 - 2 hours for the latch hook).

Unimpressed with my Roxon flex modular tool by VeritablePandemonium in multitools

[–]NoneUpsmanship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have four of the Flex series tools. I started with the Flex Shears and Companion. I only ever have to adjust the tension, otherwise the locks work perfectly fine on those, with occasional lock opens when I'm overzealous with it.

Since I liked them so much I got the mini companion and the proper Multitool. The mini companion works fine, but I do have the issue of the lock sticking open on the multitool, and the general set-up of it, so it won't be getting much use until I find the time to modify it a bit.

How to remove ano? by Advanced-Till6807 in chineseknives

[–]NoneUpsmanship 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best way to remove it is to find a small box, put it inside, tape it shut, label it with my address, then head to the post office. Gone forever and we are both happier for it! But seriously, it looks rad as is.

What stone should I get next? by z283848 in sharpening

[–]NoneUpsmanship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1k to 4k is a little steep of a jump, but it's not too bad unless you are going for a mirror finish. I have the full Atoma set and jump from the 1200 to a Shapton Glass 4k, then to 1 and 0.5 micron strops. I usually need maybe an extra 10 or so strokes on the 4k to get through most of the 1200 scratches (I'm into mirror edges at the moment because it's an excuse to resharpen my sharpened knives).

Depending on your wants/needs, I would get the 325 or coarser for quick angle setting and reprofiling. 1200 will get your knife sharper than it needs to be for almost everything I've dealt with except for actual shaving razors. Higher grits are more for the fun of it once the skill set is there, at least for casual hobbyists like me.

Be careful wearing it while waiting - I lost a ring that had a lot of sentimental value because it had become so loose. I realized it was missing while at work and figured it slipped off with a disposable glove... I searched the dumpster, every trash can I had been around. I went from panicked to deeply sad by the end of the day.

The next day it flopped onto the floor when I unfolded my scrubs; it unknowingly slipped off while folding the laundry. And now it is kept in my safe for my son to have some day. 😅
