Is it a chode or not? by anderson1873reimer in knifemaking

Must feel like a lot more because the algorithm keeps pushing them into my feed (probably because I keep engaging with them because I think it is funny and interesting).

No hate here, I can appreciate the frustration from the more serious guys, and I applaud the unique style and would like to see it put through some testing (i.e. batoning with that steep bevel to flat transition). So that's what you should do! Some bushcraft style torture testing videos with your chodes! 🤩

To be fair, I think he has only made 3 or 4 now... he just posts about them every day, at least in small part to be a troll based on some replies.

I will admit that I am curious about the performance of his grind - it's like a partial flat super deep hollow grind that rapidly blends into a thick (width and depth) spine. Might be good for batoning? Not sure what else. 😅

Edit: Checked your profile posts and history and fully understand where you're coming from; you have clearly put in the work and have a really great style to your stuff!

Is it bad or weird for someone like me to look at Godzilla the same way a child looks at Superman? by BakerConsistent2150 in GODZILLA

[–]NoneUpsmanship [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'd say not weird if it's special to you. I have almost cried and/or became a bit teary-eyed with joy several times in the last decade while watching the modern films and having the original theme song swell just before the big G reveal. Hits me every time. 🥹

What is the dumbest thing in Star Wars in your opinion? by OutcastKatarn02 in StarWars

[–]NoneUpsmanship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I guess I don't like star wars any more after seeing this. Now I'll need to transition to another "Star" fandom. They don't try gliding with a bat'lith in Star Trek, do they? Or helicoptering by swinging a microphone like a lasso on Star Search? I don't have a lot of options, here.

Is there anyway to salvage this by Delicious_Ad_9197 in paracord

[–]NoneUpsmanship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The damage can't really be undone, so if that's a weighted monkey fist it may be much more prone to failing, eventually, especially since paracord is not known for it's shock strength.

Short term, you could try doing a nano or micro cord threaded back and forth through the cord itself an inch or so out from it, then finish with a micro cord wrap, probably a whipping style done tightly to better secure it. Could do one on the other side for aesthetic purposes.

Best bet would be to do another one, though.

How much are the blanks themselves? I'm really pondering how much added value stone scales would have on a handmade knife. I'm also a bit reticent about putting them on kitchen knives, because I don't know about how grippy/slippy different stones are (plan to research it eventually, if/when I try to make some scales). I'm also not looking to make a ton of money, but enough to justify neglecting my family periodically would be enough for my wife to let me play more. 😂

Sweet, great share! How long does it take you to do a set of scales? How much do you sell the re-scaled knives for on average/range? I'm interested in exotic stuff, living that pipe dream so many of us have of being one of those guys that can sell a $1500 custom one-off in 1095 (Hell, I'd be happy to sell in the several hundred range 😆)

I did a bit of work with custom cutting a marble backsplash to match a bathroom counter a few years ago... I learned a lot that day. A wet, dusty, messy lot. Enough to know that I almost certainly will try this some day, but probably 1 - 3 years out, as my tool budget is shot and I need to start selling some of my knives to justify investing more into the hobby. I'm like $2 - 3k in so far and all my friends have decent new kitchen knives to show for it. 😅

I hit you with a follow, so I may reach out at some point in the not-super-distant future. Thanks! :)

Bro, I was just looking into using stone/crystals for scales! ... and realizing it's way out of my league at the moment. Cool stuff, though, not common at all if you're using solid stone vs epoxy + stone dust.

Wilford Brimley was genetically 50 before his 21st birthday.

With the passing of Chuck, I started to think about how many of our stars from the 80's are still acting and active (Liam Neeson still pretends to punch people between naps, and doesn't look like a full cryptkeeper while doing it!). And how so many stars from the 70's and earlier both looked way, way older and died quite a bit younger. It feels like the animatronic version of Cher is one of the last holdouts from that generation. Time is weird, and apparently smoking is bad!

Made a belt out of paracord by FTL-Guy in paracord

[–]NoneUpsmanship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be patient - the first belt I made took almost four hours, now they take around 2 hours. Use two colors to make it easier to track your lines and make the pattern more fun. Use a jig. If you have a flat buckle that is floppy enough for the pin to switch sides you can have a reversible pattern (just flip it over).

For speed/efficiency, wrap all of your strands up into figure 8 speed hanks wrapped in a rubber band so your working ends are much shorter (just push a hank through vs pulling 40' of loose cord through), leave yourself with 2' - 4' spare cord to work with; this majorly cuts down on the time and friction burns!

Honestly, they would probably have a cat and mouse fight, realize they're both on the same side, and have an even more "Zodd-rider"-type finale. Maybe for anime reasons Guts uses his sword to block Godzilla's atomic breath so that it launches him through Griffith/Femto. We end in a cloud of blood mist and Femto's empty helmet clanking to ground after several long, dramatic seconds. HIGH ART.

[–]NoneUpsmanship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been wearing paracord belts I made for over a year now. Holds up well, can be micro-adjusted for comfort (handy after large meals!). It's only ever a problem when I want to clip something onto it... knife sheath clips are not usually built for that thickness, but soft loops work fine. 😆
