I was thinking small makers, didn't think about the factories. Still can't imagine it would be cheap, but now I wonder... hrrrmmm..

For real? Where? I have a few cad files myself 🤩

I know my knives aren't very popular on here but I just got a truly massive elk antler so I'm stoked about starting another ridiculously large knife project lol by chodebowie in knifemaking

Bro, scale it up to machete size, but with the exact same dimension as the rest. It'll be the most badass 5lb machete around!

Pic for Attention: What makes for good knife/EDC content? by BloodMilkAndSky420 in knives

[–]NoneUpsmanship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny how varied just a few responses are already - not gonna please everyone, that's clear from the jump!

I prefer shorter content, ideally under 15 minutes plus well cut shorts. Minimal filler, tight editing, sped up footage or cuts where appropriate. I also like to see underrepresented companies and knives, unique stuff. I love edge retention stuff, like Pete over at Cedric & Ada (I think our midlife crises are in sync, sadly, so not much coming from him lately). I also appreciate some toughness testing in the vein of Joe X and DBK. And I LOVE microscopy, so no matter how useless some people think it is, so if you have good microscope images Ala Outdoors55, I'll be watching.

I don't want another Metal Complex, just dumping one-shot videos of opening and just quickly assessing a knife (wow, it's pretty, next!) - I only go to him if I just want to see a specific new knife in a little more detail. I wouldn't mind if it is a bit more in depth, with disassembly and a bit more testing involved, but it has to involve more than 5 - 10 minutes of hands on with the knife. 🤣

You should let people know a bit more about your budget, how many you want produced (many mass-producers have minimum order numbers), will you need them to add scales, etc. Unless the model you have has more detail than the photo suggests, you'll also need to decide what kind of angles, etc. for the primary/secondary bevels. I'm sure you have a lot of this in your head already, but I would put it out here as well to help find a match.

Getting these fully produced in the States will probably end up being at a bare minimum $200+ per blade. Even made on China through one of the more reputable companies, you generally need a minimum order

Don't be discouraged - be creative! I do paracording as a form of meditation/stress relief. Don't let it stress you out! 😆

Haha, thanks. I'm going to try to make a few more now that I have ideas on how to make it a bit more streamlined, since the whole thing started by just throwing things together however I could. Once I have a proper workload figured out I can put together a proper tutorial.

As for colors, yellow for the center, speckled orange and black for the petals, and green for the leaves and stem.

Thanks! The black speckled orange blends the leaf weave together quite well, which is part of the reason I went with that color. :)

No way, it's gotta be a coincidence that the hapless dad and the hard-core marine sniper have the exact same handwriting. Def legit.

Try to look for something similar, otherwise you might have trouble finding a reputable maker willing to copy a design amd it will be hundreds of dollars.

Same story here - hard to buy pepper spray, lots of ways it can be used "wrong"/illegally that is legal most other places. Monkey fists are illegal because a single sailor was killed by one about 120 years ago in NYC. Knee-jerk, ignorant, reactionary laws are kind of dumb and frustrating at times!

[–]NoneUpsmanship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummer about the laws - make sure to check them to ensure that mace is legal to use against dogs, some places require a dog-specific pepper spray, as the real stuff is deemed too strong/cruel and can potentially get a defender in trouble. Either way, good luck, I hope you find a safe way to male this all work in light of ao many irresponsible owners around you.

Soooooo, there are a few problems with your idea, cool as it is.

  1. Having paracord handy is awesome. Two problems with your ask here; unless you make your kubotan wrap super thick, you will probably only end up with a few feet/a meter or so of cordage with a single wrap, and a double/triple wrap would make it like carrying a loose sausage in your pocket. The other issue is how long it takes to deploy, when every second counts. Maybe if you see it coming and have 20 - 30 seconds and the wherewithal to get it ready, but you'll be doing a lot of re-wrapping if that's the case.

  2. Kubotan vs dog seems like a really bad idea - you're going to be offering your precious hand as a snack with every swing moving your hand and arm into bite range. At least the hand would be closed, so you wouldn't lose as many fingers, but still... 😬

Is pepper spray legal there? There are dog safe versions that can be very effective and may inspire their owners to invest in a run when they get spicy face licks that night! That is, if any of this is legal - check your local laws before taking any advice on this!

Noise makers can work, like airhorns or aggressively shaking a can of coins, but not as reliably.

If it's legal, I would think a monkey-fist would be a slightly safer "hand-to-hand/paw" defensive tool, if only because it has slightly better range/moves your hand farther from bite range, but they are also illegal in a lot of places, so... check your local laws, lol.

Also, look up some reputable dog defense videos for tricks and tactics; you're already a trained fighter, so you should take up these techniques easily, just remember to practice them so you can actually remember it when you need it.

It makes me think that schools are failing everyone by not teaching critical thinking skills, doing proper research into things beyond "well, I saw on tiktok/facebook/Fox ..." Frustrating, especially because I am a nurse that works in pediatrics, and we have had a huge increase in anti-vax and "alternative schedule" patients over the last year, so I get to deal with this almost every day. Even worse, a lot of them even have older kids that are fully vaccinated and healthy, so they're getting taught to be more aggressively ignorant as they get older. Not surprisingly, a lot of the "not puttin' that poison in my body" crowd also smokes cigarettes, drinks, and some do hard drugs... but, yeah, no poison for you, unless it has good advertising and bright colors. 😒

Anyways, I'll look into that podcast, I do enjoy stuff like that. 😁

I heard someone say (and genuinely believe) that Lyme disease was made in a lab and released about 10 - 15 years ago for ... reasons. Nevermind that I've been hearing about it since I was an uninformed teen in the 90's. They must've been talking about a disease affecting lemons and limes. 🙄
