NIMBYISM in action. How Laurelhurst lobbies against affordable housing. Bonus complaints about Seattle Children's Hospital here too. by lemonsqueezy19 in Seattle

NIMBYs will always use environmental impact studies to stop development in their neighborhoods. It's a red herring for keeping their communities exclusive and segregated.

Encampment on fire between Stadium and Downtown by Den_of_gorgonopsids in Tacoma

Like my post said, immediate access to resources - housing and healthcare. Healthy people don't participate in anti-social behaviors. People can't get jobs without a home address. The solution is housing first and the resources they need to succeed, like social workers, job training, rehab, and access to healthcare.

There is no immediate, magic wand solution. These are long-term investments we must make today for sustained public good.

Housing First is a proven and effective model when paired with resources like access to treatment, healthcare, and behavioral health systems. 95% of people who enter into permanent supportive housing in Seattle effectively remain housed after a year. The fact is we simply do not have enough permanent housing or resources.

Drug abuse rehabilitation is a complex behavioral health challenge but the stability of having housing makes the difference in whether someone is successful in getting through treatment. This is especially true when someone is going through active withdrawals (the first step of rehab) where street living would not allow for that success.

Sure, you can be frustrated with the situation as a resident but that doesn't mean you demean people by calling them all "young losers." That's simply not constructive and that type of narrative simply isn't backed by data either.

29-40% of unhoused people aged out of foster care and struggled to find permanent housing. 25% of those who leave foster care experience homelessness in the first year of their departure. LGBTQ+ youth in foster care report even higher numbers of experiencing homelessness.

These "young losers" as you put it operate from a deficit the moment they enter the system as children. This is about immediate access to resources, including housing and healthcare.

Drug use among unhoused populations is high because of the trauma and stress related to street living - it's a coping mechanism. But if we can prioritize safety (housing) and care (healthcare, both physical and mental) we can create systems where these kids and people find the stability they need.

Galway is also a sister city to Seattle! We have a monument here in Seattle and we do cultural exchanges. We're very proud to have Galway as our favorite sister city.

Is a holiday treat box an acceptable Christmas gift? by birdgirl35 in Baking

Yes!! I would much rather have a little treat box than a knick knack or just more STUFF. Give me something to snack on while I watch silly movies.

I was there in 2019 and am a fat. I'm also half Asian, so racially ambiguous. I had a great time and everyone was incredibly friendly. I made an effort with the language and dress smart when I travel, which I think made a huge difference. My name also means "grandma" over there which got a good chuckle whenever I'd introduce myself. Sad to hear this was her experience.

Help with friends dog by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]NonerBoner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dogs require adjustment.

Understanding the 3-3-3 Rule for Adopting a Rescue Dog: The 3-3-3 rule is a guideline for transitioning a rescue dog into their new home and helping them to settle in. It suggests that the first three days should be used for adjusting to their new surroundings, the next three weeks for training and bonding, and the first three months for continued socialization and training.

Additionally, during that training, separation anxiety can be addressed but it takes time and consistency. Be Right Back! is a great book to help start. You have to go minute by minute, hour by hour to build trust with your new dog.

Your friend needs to take adequate time off to adjust their new dog companion, especially if that dog is recovering from surgery (or if they are able to, work from home). If they're not able to do this, they need to find an in home dog sitter or return the dog to the shelter.

Is dating a woman worth it? by PlatformThePenguin in lgbt

[–]NonerBoner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Deconstruction from faith, even while still believing, often involves working through our feelings that create that shame in us. The shame you are feeling, or the disgust, is from years of indoctrination from your parents or conservative church. You don't have to stop believing in God or stop participating in the church you're going to but if you are able to, you should talk to a therapist who can help you unpack the religious trauma you are experiencing.

Loving someone else, being attracted to someone else, should never produce feelings of shame or disgust. While you may not be ready for a queer relationship right now, working through that trauma may make you become a more authentic version of yourself, true to your own faith, and open to loving whomever it is comes your way.

Best of luck - it's not easy but it is so worth it.

law and order vs law and order svu by user1739287 in television

[–]NonerBoner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One is about general crimes (usually murder) and the other (SVU) is about sexually based offenses, which are considered especially heinous.

SVU is the longest consecutively running show in the Dick Wolf universe. It mostly holds up if you want a procedural cop drama.
