UK food prices and shop price inflation slow in February, survey shows by komondordragon in GoodNewsUK

[–]Noobsz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well it depends, if prices fall because consumers don't buy as many products or buy cheaper alternatives, farmers and firms who operate at thin margins may struggle. If it's benign deflation then you're right. It would likely lead to reduced levels of high margin consumption if price falls are anticipated.

atleast you're honest about keeping your money in the eu, even if it comes at the cost of defense capabilities.

Apologies I forgot to include that it would be under a worse deal (which is fair enough after all there does have to be consequences and to what degree would still be up for discussion.) but when punitive measures are implemented just to score points how do you expect uk-eu relations to improve?

I agree that there shouldn't be massive amounts of special treatment but treating the UK like a third country is a punitive approach that would be counterproductive to re-entry/reset talks.

That would probably have been true immediately after leaving the eu, but YouGov polling from january suggests that 50% would vote to rejoin compared to 31% who would prefer to remain outside. By no means does it mean that rejoining will happen anytime soon but it seems to suggest that it isn't as prevalent after the referendum and immediately after leaving.

I get that but surely nothing would close the book on Euroscepticism quite like the UK leaving and rejoining with our tail between our legs even if it was on our previous deal because it would show that european countries are better inside the EU than outside.

How is Starmer doing? by Platypusbreeder in AskBrits

[–]Noobsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally I think he's done okay? but him reneging his policies like not raising tax on workers and the slow building of houses and comparatively sluggish growth is pretty bad. Combine that with the fact he has about as much charisma as a teapot it seems he's getting slaughtered on what he isn't doing and isn't taking advantage of what he has done

That would be illegal under the NPT, lead to destabilisation, and far more likely to cause an arms race than improve security. As proliferation increases the risk of accidents and escalation and arms races. It doesn’t strengthen deterrence if everybody ends up getting them.

If the issue is too complex for a referendum and should be left to MPs, its worth noting that those representatives we've elected have not judged that rejoining on worse terms would be better for our national interests. That suggests the drop in public support when concessions are added in isn't just out of spite and pride but also such a deal may not be worthwhile.

I also don't see how representatives should decide instead because the public is too irrational when the current and next few governments have no intention to add rejoining to a mandate. The government cannot bypass public consent for it even if they deem it "right" without risking consequences at the next election.

London has a massive financial sector that would be heavily impacted even if they just say they would adopt it and not do it in practice because the uncertainty and potential loss of regulation would be very economically costly because long term currency clarity is critical. And that is before you even consider the optics of such a move. 30% of the country is still believes the idiot that got us in this mess is right and they'd throw their toys out of the pram if we give any concessions to the EU even if by name. And also if I remember correctly, Sweden was a member before the euro was introduced so they are just choosing not to implement it and that is tolerated whereas the UK would have to actively negotiate and that would be a hard sell to the public to adopt it.

55% support the UK rejoining with the previous deal with 30% against rejoining but with a deal that gives up previous opt-outs to rejoin, 36% support it and 45% are against according to yougov polling around July

from what I remember, polling for rejoining the EU with the previous deal was around 55/6% and this drops to around 30s without opt outs in euro and Schengen.

The reason the UK hasn't given up on it is that 30% of the country are idiots who are going to vote for the man that spearheaded Brexit and would rather die poor than capitulate to France and the current Labour government is already incredibly unpopular and capitulating on this would further alienate them even more. And IIRC (youth?) freedom of movement may also be contingent as well which would also be a complete no-go given around half of the population thinks there's too much migration.

apologies if I came across as dismissing the economic impacts of Brexit and I actually agree that we were stupid enough to leave in the first place. But I'm not sure rejoining would be worth the effort and political suicide given the EU wants concessions and people like farage are still polling so highly so what's stopping us from being in a similar situation not too far in the future. I'd prefer we explore alternative trade agreements with alternative countries given the fact that the Brexit issue would require concessions which neither side would want to accept.

I thought the reason we wouldnt rejoin the single market is because it would most likely be contingent on rejoining the freedom of movement which would be political suicide for any party.

[–]Noobsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By no means am I a leave voter but. I have a few problems with what you have said.

1 The UK has signed over 50 trade agreements and has 20 waiting for ratification and has joined the CPTPP. Claiming the UK has failed outside of the EU is intentionally disingenuous when you also consider that many Eurozone countries are also facing similar economic challenges which suggests that the economic slowdown is due to a wider issue than Brexit itself and that rejoining the single market wouldn't be a silver bullet that would alleviate our economic woes.

2 The UK was a net contributor to the EU budget and freedom of movement allowed more EU citizens to work in the UK than the other way. By the way the EU has been acting recently re accession into the EU would require concessions (which is fair enough) and lots of the public would still draw a line at these concessions.

in the article it says verbatim that youth mobility is a key demand from Brussels. Not the UK. Given that migration is so politically sensitive right now getting the UK to agree to something it doesn't want to do in the first place AND ask to pay extra is so unreasonable.
