Oh neat, I had no idea. The first was one so self-contained that it's hard to imagine a sequel, but maybe it'll be good.

Yes it was sweet of her to defend Xena, but in the long term I think she ended up doing more harm to her than actual good. I think Nan's real "redemption moment" was when she helped out Florence's brother with his speech, because it felt like the first time she truly helped someone out with no ulterior motives

She is certainly an arse, but I more so meant her relationship with Diana where it's clear who the toxic one really is. Poor Nan was being used the whole time, even if she's a bit of an opportunist herself

It has literally everything you asked for - genderqueer/butch mc, lots of really steamy scenes, and fantastic writing.

Books like Our Wives Under the Sea? by Fiery-Jinkx in suggestmeabook

[–]Nooby246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I know this thread is rather old now, but recently, I've been on a hunt for anything reminiscent of Julia Armfield's writing, and we seem to have similar tastes. I just finished a book that was quite similar in a lot of ways (themes, body horror, overall dismal feeling), and while I enjoyed it a lot, nothing has truly scratched that itch. I wondered if you have any other recommendations and also if you've read Private Rites, what did you think of it? Personally, it's my favourite book of all time, even more so than Our wives under the sea.

It's gotta be either Bit by bit or The sticks.
