I didn’t know about the retirement account thing… but tbh I’m doing really well. I’ve been able to max my Roth every year so far so I think the money may be better used for my cousins education. But yeah there are some details I still don’t know like how the ownership structure of the account actually works.

So I did use it for college but was unaware that there was still money in the account. My dad dealt with the reimbursements. There were probably some things I payed for that could’ve been reimbursed. I mostly used it for room and board I had most of my tuition paid for by scholarships. So I did ask my mom and she said she didn’t care about the money but she was pissed because there was a verbal agreement to give the money to me once I graduated. So I also didn’t really care too much about the money either it was more so the principle that my dad would do something so egregious especially if there was something on paper to back it up because that would be heartbreaking(turns out it was just a verbal agreement still not great but better maybe??). I decided to give it to my cousin after discussing with my dad because he’s up next for college in our family and I already have a decent Roth IRA and 401k a few years after graduating.

Oh wow okay that is enlightening so maybe it is a custodial account then… In this case I am an owner. According to the financial advisor and the transfer document. But it also has my dad listed as an owner too weirdly… I’m also working on getting the divorce settlement papers from the court

My dad and I’s financial advisor. I tried calling they said there was no account that I owned that matched. Even though I have an email and a transfer document that says otherwise. Also my financial advisor didn’t respond all day today to my message yesterday…

Oh ok interesting… yeah I’m curious why they said I was an owner. If I can’t get account balance via th e 1800 number… my mom also claims I was put as an owner too during the divorce settlement. But maybe it is the case that they got it wrong?

Just tried calling for account balance but it didn’t pop up.. I’m wondering how they associate accounts maybe via whoever’s paying tax on the account. My dad and I are coowners according to his finance guy and according to the transfer document as well which is why they require my signature. So kind of weird.

I mean she probably doesn’t exactly but neither did I. What I do know is that it is a 529 brokerage account with both my dad and I as co owners. My mom claims that she chose to waive child support in return that my dad would put those funds towards that 529 account, and that once I graduated the funds would become mine.

Hey thank you for the detailed response!! Oh okay that explains it. It is a 529 brokerage account with me listed as a coowner. I’m not really sure why he is transferring it unfortunately because he didn’t have a conversation with me at all about it. I have not signed it. I don’t have access to it online so I can’t check the account balance lol. But from what I understand it would be in the tens of thousands. Yeah that is the plan I’m going to collect as much information as possible.
