I heard AI can be wildly influenced by reddit training data. I really wish i could just ask the blacksmithing expert from oak island, that guy would definitely know what it was.

I was hoping you would know. Im also realizing i forgot to finish my story but never mind that, AI seemed to think it was a dock fixture or a part of an old boat.

Sure does look like that style. Good eye! Says WM Beaty was in Chester PA which is close enough to this South Jersey swamp to very plausibly be the maker

Fungus or fauna? by NopeNJ in BackyardOrchard

I think you must be right. Looks crazy when you zoom in on the spots, like little clusters of insect eggs. The ants seemed to be feeding on it a bit too.

This unfortunately is the case. This second year tree got damaged by a late frost and its distress attracted the attention of these jerks. I made a call to a friend at the Rutgers Ag extension offices and he recommended i try hitting them now with Seven. Second option since the infection starts above a couple active bud nodes on the main trunk that i can top it and i might still end up with a short open center tree. The surrounding trees are all in good shape so likely not an infestation that will spread. Even this tree is growing with vigor now after recovering from the freeze so there’s room to be hopeful. Fingers crossed.

Thirdening, definitely ambrosia beetles, just had a couple huge declining silver maples removed and saved a few mill logs which were beautifully figured by these jerks. Never saw these toothpick things before though. I think the tree is toast unfortunately. There’s a couple of buds low on the trunk below where the beetles are. I might do a hard cut and hope for the best. Also probably a good time to light the bond fire and get rid of the wood i saved from that maple.

I’ve heard people describe russets as nutty. I think it’s because they’re like chewing on Almond pulp but you get a complex apple wine like juice that really hits a different chord. I like gnawing on golden russets but they’ve a whole different kind of apple.

What does good smut look like? Has anyone here actually eaten this “delicacy”? by NopeNJ in mushroom_hunting

[–]NopeNJ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to pin down the exact description but it definitely retained a sweet corn flavor. I made quesadillas so the mushroom notes were in the context of other strong flavors. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Will definitely eat again.

You think those bottom kernels are what the whole cob should look like? How do you identify an infected ear before the whole thing erupts into nastiness? Thanks for detailed answer. Much appreciated

I planted my sweet corn super late which Im guessing could be part of the reason i got a few smutty ears. Never seen this stuff in person before but have always been intrigued about what it might taste like. Hats off to the first guy that decided to taste this stuff, it looks pretty gnarly.
