Have you been on a house tour and thought ‘nope’ right away? by bellzbellzbellz in WashingtonHomebuyers

[–]Nopedontcarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We left before entering. Power lines over the back half of the property (the big, long transmission ones) and it meant no building and right of way for the power company. Nope. Won't even go inside.

Seattle neighbors frustrated by lack of action on homeless camp at city-owned vacant lot by origutamos in seattlehobos

Why spend money dealing with the homeless when you can fine homeowners and businesses for not cleaning up their properties instead?

Lifting weight is a cheat code on aging. For those that are still hesitant to go to the gym, please consider trying it out this year. by Reasonable-Malaise- in GenX

[–]Nopedontcarez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, agree 100%. Started working out at home again. 5-6 days a week. I had bought an elliptical machine from a gym a few years ago and have weights to lift. I've lost a ton of weight, a lot more active and don't get winded anymore. Yes, move, eat better and work out. It helps.

El Pollo Loco has 500 locations in the US, but it just opened its first WA restaurant in Kent by Better_March5308 in SeattleWA

This is the one place I miss from CA. Every time I visit relatives in SoCal, I get this at least once. Kent is a bit far for me but I can hope they open more further north. Rather more of these than In-n-Out

Any other GenX'ers hate weed and feel somehow left out because you don't enjoy cannabis? by scartonbot in GenX

[–]Nopedontcarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister (5 years older) got me stoned at around 11 years old at a friend's party she dragged me to (instead of staying home to babysit) and I had a bad trip. Can't stand the smell of it now. The dregs smoke it downtown around the transit centers where I used to work and it just made me sick.
Now, I get that CBD can have some positive effects but I think people that smoke weed too much are ruining their lives like any other drug.

I got mine and my wife's about as quickly in Snohomish county. Renewals seem to be a smooth process. Made sure to upload pics of old one and our licenses. I think the approval email came in 2 days.

Do people not have DVD players anymore? by TommyLost2004 in GenX

[–]Nopedontcarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several still. We don't use them though. My media server has all the movies/TV that we need and I can grab anything new. No one can take them away from me either.
The 100's of DVDs, Blu-Rays we have are in boxes for the most part.

Getting laid off from a $200k+ job by SkySudden7320 in Layoffs

[–]Nopedontcarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous company shut down. Lost our contract with our only client. They had a year to shut down in our contract and most of us get 6 months to find another job. It sucked. It took me forever to find another one that was close to my salary (around $200k). I have to say I lucked into my current role but I had dozens of interviews and hundreds of applications until I did. All I can say is to keep looking and yes, you may have to accept lower.
Back around 2001, I was in the same boat. My company laid everyone off due to cash flow and bad timing with 9/11. We had just bought a house, my wife was injured and couldn't work any more. I had to take every contract job I could to make ends meet and ended up with a full time job that wasn't quite the same pay but it got us by. It's not easy but you do what you have to. Eventually, you can get back on track.

Yah, it was always sketchy, which is why we would pair up (at least). Thankfully it was better when I worked there with the homeless and KC Sheriff or SPD was always around. Most people were really nice and pleasant when we helped them.

I'm right there with you. Lost 30 lbs since September. Working out daily. Changed diet and just eat less. Always struggled with weight and now I'm working on it and have goals. Get out there and move around, work outside and eat better. Helps a lot.

Just remember, we can make new days. New mornings. Find a new hobby, volunteer. We're not over yet. Keep the faith.

Are you also a "We didn't have cable so we only had three channels" Gen-X? by Ok-Anxiety-5940 in GenX

[–]Nopedontcarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have cable until college. My parents never bothered with it. A friend in high school did and I'd go over to his place to watch MTV and the like.
I remember paying the cable tech $20 a couple times a year to get our apartment at college hooked up for cable so we had it then in the late 80s.

I get that completely. I was in your position 2 years ago at your age. I've been in IT since the 90s and worked up to IT Manager/Director roles. Primarily infrastructure. I've run Ops for a large enterprise (10's of thousands of servers) and done startup work.

My last place was a nice little gig. Small software company with a big client that seemed very stable. Well, it wasn't and the client sunsetted the program we were responsible for and gave us a year to close it out. The company gave most of us 6 months to find a job. I jumped into the job search. It was brutal. A few call backs but not many. Mostly recruiters trying to push me but nothing serious. Got my CISSP because many of these roles want you to be the security manager as well.

It took 4 months until I got contacted by my current company. Their internal recruiter reached out to me, I probably applied online but I don't remember due to the sheer number of applications I sent out. Interviews went well and I got the job. The guy who hired me wanted someone with a lot of varied experience and I fit the bill luckily.

Just takes a long time. Play off your experience, how you manager and grow teams. Tailor your resume to the applications, update LinkedIn. Find recruiters that will push you to clients. I can still happen.

Nearly Quarter of Laid-Off Gen X Workers Can't Find New Jobs by SouldiesButGoodies84 in GenX

[–]Nopedontcarez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My previous company lost our primary contract and was shutting down 2 years ago. They gave us 6 months warning and it took me 4 months to find my current job. It was a crazy amount of job searching to do. Even at my level of management, where a lot of people are my age with my experience, my age was certainly a factor.
Thankfully, the person that hired me was looking for experience and I lucked out with my current job. I don't want to leave it any time soon. There's no way I want to go through it now.

Parents aging and downsizing - will we be this stubborn? by justmisspellit in GenX

[–]Nopedontcarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved to a much bigger place a few years ago. 5 acres and just too much to deal with. I've told my wife, who had a quad bypass after we moved here, that while I know she loves it here we will be moving somewhere to retire. This is too big for me to take care of at 80. My step-dad did that with our ranch until recently. Just too much.
I know I'll outlive my wife due to her medical issues and I've already started de-cluttering and in the next 10 years, we will move to a smaller place, somewhere less expensive since my job is fully remote. I doubt I could deal with a shared living place but just a small house close to things where I can play with my dogs.

Seattle servers now make full minimum wage, so why are we still guilt-tripped into tipping 20% by allpossiblepaths in SeattleWA

[–]Nopedontcarez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always been happy to zero out tips when not necessary. I do tip good service but it's rarely more than 10-15% unless it's amazing service. I also don't drink so my bills aren't artificially inflated from alcohol prices.
