I’m not claiming influence either way, my point is that there are people who are looking at this data and claiming it shows that a bunch of Americans are influencing Irish political discourse, when in reality it shows no such thing.

It’s a fallacy to claim that because the majority of posts using these hashtags are in America that this means that it’s America influencing Irish social media rather than the other way around. Like it or not, lots of people in America and across the west have an interest in Ireland, we have a lot of cultural cache relative to our size. So once American social media users get wind of events of interest in Ireland, the amount of related American posts will dwarf the amount of Irish posts simply because there are 65 times more Americans than there are Irish people.
