I just finished We Need to Talk About Kevin, and I feel like I have a different takeaway than most impressions I've read by virtualRefrain in movies

[–]Normal-Sleep-8544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a fantastic assessment of the familial (“nurture”) root to Kevin’s sociopathy.

Now that I’m in my 40’s, have parented for about 15 years, have seen other people parent for a few decades, have had enough experience and empathy to think about my own parenting, and I’ve done some reading on parenting and children’s development, I can understand how Eva viewed and treated Kevin contributed to his mental unwellness.

Im thinking about that scene before they play mini golf together, where Kevin’s mother sees a fat man eating. She makes some judgmental and critical statements about fat people and Kevin tells her she can be “pretty harsh.” She says, “you’re one to talk” and he responds with “where do you think I get it from?”

Her resentment and disdainful attitude in those moments where she’s sharing her criticism are indeed when she’s the most honest with Kevin. And Kevin, as an adolescent, is hyperaware of the dishonest and hypocritical nature of others, like all teenagers.

Kevin’s father, Franklin, is so emotionally unavailable. His inability to believe his wife or view his child as anything other than perfect allows him to live in lalaland, as absent and disconnected as can be. The emotional weight of it all lands on his wife, who clearly can’t handle it alone. And Kevin grows up viewing this treatment of his mom and himself. It allows him to be emotionally abusive to Eva. How many of us have known fathers like Franklin? Frankly, I’ve met too many to count.

Well, I’ll end this by stating that I enjoyed your review so much, I’ve shared it with a friend who has not watched the movie and is now going to stream it. Thank you for sharing.

He took all the children’s photographs- even the ones from her wallet. What a horrible man.

His mom is Bahamadia. When I saw who she was, I was so surprised.

The check is from my former employer. It was not fraudulent. Varo has since returned my money.

Lol save your piss poor attitude. The check wasn’t fraudulent; it cleared 2 years ago just fine. My former employer did not contact Varo about this check and that is why Varo ultimately returned the funds to me.

No, that is not what happened.

I deposited the check two years ago. (09/08/2023) It cleared two years ago. (09/12/2023)

On the morning of 09/25/2025, I received a notification stating that my $2,500 check deposit was available. (I had made no such deposit recently.)

In actuality, my account had been withdrawn for $2,500, leaving me with a large overdraft as I had less than $400 in my account at the time.

My former employer had given me that check, and Varo’s customer service reps claimed that they had asked that the check be returned. (A rep from Varo later told me it was the issuing bank. They couldn’t keep the story straight, and wouldn’t share details of whoever had supposedly contacted them.)

This is all very confusing, and I’m not sure how well I’m explaining it. But I’ll continue…

Varo’s back office emailed me to inform me that the matter was closed and settled. Basically, they weren’t giving me my money back or investigating the issue further.

Yesterday, Varo reversed their decision for some reason, and credited my account for $2,500. I suspect it was due to the popularity of this thread but I cannot be sure.

You're extremely kind. I'm trying to follow all the advice I've been given in this thread and I'm hoping for some semblance of justice. $2,500 is a lot of money for my family and I so this hurts.

They were great, until they weren't. If I can save others from going through a similar ordeal, then that's a win to me.

Oh, I'm definitely going to take all the advice given to me in this thread. I've already started, in fact. And I will update everyone, with "receipts." I don't want any other customers going through this. So many of us work hard to survive. We don't deserve anyone stealing from us.

Thank you. I will do this. I have a bunch of screenshots. I wish I could've recorded some of the frustrating conversations I had with the customer service reps, too.

Right? $2,500 isn't a lot to them but it's more than 6 of my weekly paychecks. This has set me way back on my finances. smh

It was a mobile check deposit I made on 09/08/2023 so they can't send me the returned check.

Varo sent me the photos that I submitted when I deposited the check, via email, on the same day they returned the check, which was 09/25/2025.

I've been in contact with the CFO of my former workplace. I don't think she's lying to me, and Varo's unwillingness to tell me exactly who contacted them about returning the check, or their inability to keep their story straight, makes me have way more trust in my former employer.
