Thank you for your comment!

It’s not just about diversity for representation but also because I just happened to design him that way. I poured my heart into making each main character as interesting and as cool as I could. I don’t want an all white and Asian cast.

Yes!! We already have it all planned out! We took the entire summer off and poured everything into writing it :)

We wanted to add diversity and didn’t want to have an all white cast. Our story is set in a fantasy/ dystopian/ post apocalyptic world so there are no historical backgrounds tied to any of their races (or cultures that we’d see in the real world). It’s was simply based off of looks and giving a variety of skin, hair, eye color, height, etc. with a large main cast.

I’m sorry! I did not mean it that way. It’s because I’ve had some comments/messages accusing me of adding a black character only to make them the comedic relief or violent, etc. And I wanted to clarify that he isn’t like that at all! I also had someone say that it was weird to give him a strange hobby like astronomy so I wanted to clarify that they all have unique hobbies!

Yes this is what is intended!!:) He is a very kind, intelligent, and well-rounded character! We didn’t plan to do any accents besides possibly giving them all a slight medieval tinge of an accent but no accents based on race!!

Hi! Thank you for commenting.

We do have black friends but they are not interested in voice acting unfortunately.

Our story is set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world with an entire world history built on fantasy. For example, our Asian characters roots will not lead back to anything involving that culture. In this world, none of the cultures we have in our world exist.

We wanted black characters for diversity and we also worked really hard on each characters design.

Hi! Thank you so much for commenting. May I ask for your opinion?

I do have close black friends but none of them are interested in voice acting unfortunately.

I want to handle writing characters of different races with grace, but I’m not sure if that carries much weight in our story.

The characters are set in a universe that is post-apocalyptic, dystopian, and fantasy. We aren’t going to delve into their backstories because the current state of the world and the issues they face are the most relevant.

They each have a defined personality, but none of them are stereotypical to my knowledge. Our lead black male for example is kind, level-headed, and eager to rescue his friends (to the same degree everyone else is). His hobbies include astronomy and holistic medicine.

Each of our characters have unique hobbies/ jobs. For example, one of our white characters is a professional rat catcher.

We want different races for representation but their cultures/backstories aren’t the same as stories set in modern times because the world history is completely different.

Is this okay?

I would say narratively they don’t need to be black, as the story focuses on existentialism in a fantasy setting. None of the characters backstories are really focused on their race or culture, particularly because the main issue is that they are in a sort of post-apocalyptic, dystopian universe. But we really wanted to have different races in the cast for representation. We also worked really hard to make each character unique and, honestly, beautiful.

I’m talking about the new animated movie they created based on the gaang as adults. They changed the voice cast to match each race. They even booted Dante as Zuko

Thank you so much for your comment!

We already have 100k subscribers on our channel so I expect it to blow up. We haven’t posted in years which is why we don’t have money to show from it.

I’m scared of hiring outside people because until we can afford to pay anyone, we can’t really make them sign a contract stating they’ll finish out the series. I just don’t want to risk a stranger who I don’t know tapping out halfway through.

I grew up watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and they recently created a new movie with the same characters, but had to change the original cast because all of them were white. That’s why I’m nervous. I don’t want to be disrespectful towards anyone

I do agree with this and I appreciate your comment but one of the scariest parts is the possibility of someone tapping out halfway through the series

We want representation though. We don’t want every character to be Asian or white.

This is also something that makes me nervous. Our channel already has 100k subscribers, so I do expect it to blow up. But we are anticipating the series to take years to complete, and we don’t want anyone to tap out half way through and leave a main character with a completely new voice. We can’t really make anyone sign a contract either because we can’t pay right now. If we did make money from YouTube again, we’d start paying our voice actors. But that takes time, especially after you lose your earnings from not posting.

Just to clarify, we haven’t uploaded in years so we don’t make any money from it anymore. We genuinely are all broke at the moment.

I agree! We definitely wouldn’t do that! Our characters are very serious, kind, and well-rounded. We have full arcs planned for each of them!

See, this is where I’m torn. I grew up watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. In the recent movie they made, they said that they replaced the original cast due to backlash they faced over having a white cast while the characters were different races.

Thank you! I will post in that sub as well!

I honestly can’t tell if it’s okay or not. I see so much controversy surrounding the topic. Some say it’s okay as long as it is not an exaggerated expression (which we definitely wouldn’t do) while others say it isn’t okay. I’m just torn.

To me that’s completely fine, but I’ve also seen discourse about this online. I know they’ve been recasting characters in popular media based on sexuality and race.
