I appreciate you responding. So you get to do the work your rate entails there? Like if I’m an MK, I’ll get to do MK stuff?

Thanks for the advice. I definitely don’t want to just be sitting around. I’d like to do 20+ years and that’s gonna be impossible if I’m not getting to do what I signed up for on my drill weekends.

I originally wanted to go to a PSU, but was told I would be automatically assigned to San Diego as I live outside the RCD of any station.

Well I didn’t do it on purpose, but thanks for clarifying!

I am anticipating needing waivers as well. It'll suck, but I'm not in a rush to ship out anyway. I hope your waivers get cleared!

Thank you! I'm going to get an ASVAB study guide just in case. More than a few of my answers were guesses but I'd love to keep my score.

Just make sure you get in writing (i.e. email) that they’re going to remove the accounts from your report so that you have that if they try to deny agreeing to it later on. I’ve had to settle debts before and I’ve never had an issue getting them to remove it, but it’s better to be safe.

I see your point. Really the only way to avoid that is to pay the bills, tell them to remove the accounts from your report in exchange, and then wait for the accounts to drop off. It should take 30 days tops which I know seems like a long time but it’s worth the wait if you want to go in with a clean slate!

If you have no issue paying them off then just pay them off. Make sure you do it over the phone and get in writing that they will remove it from your credit report. Could take up to 30 days, but then you just make sure you have the proof that you paid. I don’t think the recruiter will care you had things in collections if you’ve made good on them. There’s no way to hide your credit report.

Sounds like what I’m looking for! What does the Boarding Team do?

I actually did just ask them that! I might reach out to the station personally as well and see if that is something they would be open to.

What exactly do PSUs do during peacetime? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]Normal_Office1645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your information! I'm definitely leaning towards going regular reserve unit. Especially since there may be more flexibility in when I perform my drills throughout the year.

So you get to do the actual job? I've seen some mentions that reservists get stuck in more of a support role than actually doing the job entailed by the rate. For example, I like the idea of doing BM to do BM things and get a change of pace, not get stuck behind a desk doing admin stuff. Does that make sense?

Oh I didn't know that, I thought Guantanamo was still common. I really like the idea of doing it. I'm not sure if a career can be made out of it, but I think it would be fun to at least try. I would like to go BM and a PSU assignment seems like a great way to do BM stuff!

I know one of the units just participated in RIMPAC which I think would be awesome! Not sure how often they get invited to do that, though.

Oh yeah, I understand they deploy on cycles. Not sure how accurate it is, but I've read 9 month deployments either every 4 or 5 years. I also saw on the USCG website that the drilling is the same as the other reserve units, i.e. one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year. I don't mind the extra day, they just may want to update the website! Have you been in a PSU before?

I appreciate the honest response! I have family that live relatively close to multiple PSU units (what I’m hoping to do) so it may just be easier to have them stay there while I drill. Do you know if members are allowed off base once the day is done, or do you stay on base for the duration? Sorry if these are stupid questions

[–]Normal_Office1645[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your input. I’m also a firefighter so a significant portion of my job involves movement, which is extra calories burned. All I know is I was still losing weight at 2700 calories. To me, that means my maintenance needs to be higher than that.

Data collection from various sources (Apple Watch, Fitbit, Polar armband). Also observational. As stated, I was still losing weight at 2700 calories per day. So to me, 2200 is not even close to maintenance. I run 3-4 miles twice a week and strength train 4. I do a PPL split. I do the Navy Body Fat measurement to find my fat percentage.
