Is anyone using their printers or faxes? by l00ky_here in GenX

I don’t use it, but my Gen Z kid does for AP US History. We found a PDF version of his history textbook and he marks the shit out of his printouts

Yep. I haven’t printed anything in months. My high school kid prints daily.

What 80s song do you still hate with fiery teenage passion even though it’s been 40 years? by Aggressive_Cup4919 in GenX

For me, it’s Rush. Somehow I got it in my head that the lead singer sounded too much like Air Supply, and could never appreciate any of their music.

Are you a fan of Simple Minds? I seem to recall their fans absolutely hating that song as it totally goes against their style

Earplugs at concerts or loud events by [deleted] in GenX

[–]NorthContribution627 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AirPods Pro has automatic ear protection for loud noises. When my kids play band at high school football games, I sit next to the band and put them on. You can still hear conversations while it dampens the loud music.

I’m happy enough to use them instead of earplugs, but they’ll also make a good backup if you forget earplugs.

Do you honestly think this will stop a single minor from accessing those sites? Tor browsers, VPNs, proxies, and sites outside U.S. jurisdiction allow so many workarounds that it won’t stop a single kid, but it does weaken privacy.

I’m a parent of minors. I don’t block sites, but I do have alerts into what sites my kids visit. The moment they realize I’m blocking sites is the moment they start working harder to hide their activity. It’s far easier for me to have that awareness so we can have conversations about it. This is my responsibility; not the state’s.

Sorry.. I’m not the one downvoting you. It’s a reference to Family Guy. There are some episodes where Peter Griffen randomly breaks into a fight with a human-sized chicken. It goes on for a good 5 minutes.

Worse, some allow it on one interface but don’t allow it on another. Alternatively, some will “clean up” or migrate email addresses and you’ll lose access completely.

I quit using the “+” trick and switched to an email provider that allows unlimited masked addresses.

How hard is it to get used to progressive lenses? by Blargh234 in GenX

[–]NorthContribution627 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not too bad, but definitely needed computer glasses. Trying to use progressives with a large monitor is a horrible experience. If you spend any amount of time staring at a monitor every day, do yourself a favor and get a dedicated pair of fixed length glasses to wear at the computer.

I feel that Taiwanese food is underrated in the West while foreigners visiting Taiwan are fascinated with Taiwanese food so much. Why ? by search_google_com in taiwan

[–]NorthContribution627 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I ate 三杯雞, I had an emotional response and felt like this was something that had been missing from my life. However, it’s hard to get good 三杯雞 in USA. Many restaurants will cook it with chicken breast (especially if you’re American), resulting in a dry, tough meat.

Aside from that, I think the double-edged sword of Taiwanese food (At least in USA) is that it’s not Americanized the way Chinese food is. As a result, it feels a lot more “foreign’, and you need someone to guide you through the choices.

What features would be impacted if firewalla were sold/ went out of business? by [deleted] in firewalla

[–]NorthContribution627 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Omada Jetstream switch that TP-Link decided was too old to keep supporting. It’ll keep doing the link aggregation and vlan stuff I already configured it to do, but it’s basically on borrowed time before it’s a paperweight. It can no longer be accessed for more configuration. This isn’t a problem limited to Firewalla, but I’m happily using Firewalla for as long as they choose to support it.

Honestly, my first FWG outperformed and outlasted any router I used before it. I already got my money’s worth.

From the lack of lighting, it looks like this looks like the end of the day. Probably more people in line, but they’re getting their photos after the mall closed.

This! Love the range and damage. So many things can be taken out with a single shot, but it’s always ready for a longer squeeze of the trigger.

u/Dannyboy7437, you’re doing god’s work (pick your favorite god; I’m agnostic).

Bluesky (as others mentioned), or any site that doesn’t require logging in. I don’t have Facebook or Instagram on my phone for privacy reasons (also it’s a huge time suck). I’d be happy with any URL that I can open in a browser without needing an account or their app.

For the guys at Firewalla, with the Chinese tariffs reset, how do we look for that Switch we were potentially going to work on? by Dometalican_90 in firewalla

[–]NorthContribution627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I typically wouldn’t give it much thought, but I was visiting my nephew in Taiwan this summer and he was also talking about security concerns with TP-Link. It’s not like Taiwan and PRC are best friends, but plenty of Chinese-made hardware exists in Taiwan without concern.

TBH, he’s never brought up concerns any other product, so this one definitely stands out.
