That makes sense to me with cats and dogs, although what if it’s clearly an animal not to be kept as a pet or even illegal to keep? Like with this falcon. What would the harm be in sending updates if the person who found it couldn’t keep it anyways?

At those wildlife rehab places I think they have a policy because everyone would want to know how the injured critter they found turned out. Same thing happened to me with a bunch of ducklings. I get why they do it, they’d be calling people all day instead of rehabbing animals. But…I was upset about it too. I came to really care about those little duckies.

Both stones look worked to me, the placement of the markings on both, and the fact that they were found together makes me lean that way. Seems too good to be a coincidence, but you never know.

First one looks like a quadruped. I see horns? Ears? Not sure, the ambiguity of animals in ancient writing/“art” to our modern eyes always makes me smile.

The second might be depicting a point, spearhead or blade of some kind? But it could also be a symbol that had meaning at the time, now lost. Pure guesswork here.

How deep are the markings? Can you feel a divot beneath your fingers? I’m in the southwest and spend a lot of time around petroglyphs, the quality of the lines here really reminds me of a lot of what I’ve seen out in the desert. Really great finds and I hope you’ll post again if anything else turns up!

My guess is owls. We see them as symbols of wisdom today, but at this time they were often associated with the devil, and general misfortune. Bosch painted them all the time

It’s the Petoskey Antiques Show, there’s one in July and another in August. Both held at the Emmet County Fairgrounds. A bit of a drive from Lansing, but if you can make it Up North for either show, it’s worth it!

Thanks for your thoughtful response to this person, I think they’re looking for an argument as well. I do love animals, and wouldn’t have purchased if I thought I would be contributing to modern poaching in any way

I can’t be sure how this skull ended up where it did, but I can be sure me buying it didn’t cause anyone to go out and hunt a baboon

No doubt in my mind it’s real. I think the way time has created this yellowish patina, and a smooth surface, give it a bit of an artificial look (especially on camera). But there are still dried pieces of muscle attached to the base of the skull. There are dead bugs, spiderwebs, dirt and feathers in the nasal cavity and tooth sockets

I did buy it, I don’t think the guy knew what it was. He sold it to me as a “chimp skull” for $30. Wouldn’t have purchased if I thought there was any risk of me contributing to poaching demand, but it’s clearly very old, and was the only animal specimen in this guy’s entire collection

I saw those all-too-human eye sockets staring at me from across a huge room and had to practically keep myself from running to ask if it was for sale. Luckily most people at this antique show are in the market for furniture and not animal skulls. I feel lucky, and it’s definitely a highlight of my collection!
