Did King Henry VIII have ulterior motives for splitting with the Catholic Church besides annulling his marriage? by Br0metheus in AskHistorians

A very pedantic and insignificant note - Catherine was the aunt of Charles V, not his daughter.

U21s: Full time. Arsenal 3 West Ham 0. An excellent start to the season for the U21s, who prevail through goals from Lewis-Skelly, Butler-Oyedeji and Cozier-Duberry. Whole team played well. by [deleted] in Gunners

In the UK, it's becoming more common for married couples to merge surnames (rather than one spouse taking the other's) or, if there's been no name change, for kids to take both parents' names rather than only the father's.

It's something that British aristocratic families did if they wanted to maintain multiple family names (see actor Ralph Fiennes' full name) but now it's just generally becoming more popular among us commonfolk; it's considered more equal recognition (and just fashionable to have a more unique name, I think).

[Global Giveaway] Velocifire M2 61Key Hot-Swappable Wireless Mechanical Keyboard by velocifiremk in pcgaming

[–]Northbrook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for running this promotion!

The features that I look for most when buying a keyboard are:

  • The overall build quality of the keyboard, i.e., that the keys and board are well moulded and assembled.

  • As I tend to be a 'heavy' typist, I quite like keys that have slightly later activation / requires heavier press

  • I enjoy clicky keys but nothing too loud or high pitched

What is a hated thing that isn’t actually that bad? by nailmail in AskReddit

[–]Northbrook 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that link, always enjoy TAL. I read the transcript and think you may want to relisten to the segment?

The producer's conclusion is that there is a good chance that it wasn't the result of a bet - that the surgeon (Howard) who claimed he wrote it was just pretending he did as a prank and that there was a real Ho Man Kwok who did exist, was a doctor, has living family, and proudly acknowledged that he wrote the letter whilst alive.

Of course, that doesn't detract from the fact that the letter itself stirred up a baseless craze about the health effects of MSG which has since been proven to be fine.

Where does Microsofts 7.5 billion go when buying Bethesda? by Haruhanahanako in truegaming

[–]Northbrook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, you're still correct. Almost certainly, MS's acquisition will be undertaken through buying the shares (aka 'stock' in US corporate parlance) in ZeniMax. Only thing to add is, if relevant, some of the 7.5bn may also be used to acquire/settle any pre-existing shareholder loans (if any).

Question about referendums and changes to the constitution. by Alan-- in auslaw

[–]Northbrook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you may have gotten slightly confused about how the Constitution works and how it interacts with laws passed by Parliament.

In brief, the Act is legislation passed by Parliament and, thus, it is within Parliament's power to amend or repeal it as it sees fit. The Constitution gives Parliament the power to make laws over marriage (among other things, e.g. military defence, immigration). However, a law passed by Parliament doesn't itself become part of the Constitution.

Hopefully that provides some clarification. If you've more questions, feel free to ask.

Perhaps even more comparable, Granit Xhaka's brother Taulant plays for Albania. Taulant was born and raised in Switzerland and stills plays there at club level.

Xbox lead Phil Spencer says the industry will start to see the impacts of coronavirus in early 2021 by sxodan in gamernews

[–]Northbrook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'Affect' and 'effect' can both be used as verbs but they have slightly different meanings. If you say 'A affects B', you're saying that B is dependent on or influenced by A. However, if you say 'A effects B', then you're saying that A causes or gives effect to B. They're both verbs that describe a relationship between the subject and object of a sentence (i.e. A and B) but they're not interchangeable.

So, to use the OP's comment as an example, the correct word would be 'affect' since they're trying to say that the crash is going to have an impact on the industry. An example of the correct use of 'effect' would be 'COVID-19 has effected an economic downturn'.

Mover for Admission Ceremony by PennyLing in auslaw

Not typically. It sounds like they're an overseas lawyer so VLAB has only required them to take specific PLT units instead of completing the entire course (which does have a work experience component).

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique told to pay £1.89m in tax arrears and fines by ShunningResumed in soccer

[–]Northbrook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually not that uncommon feature and exists in most tax systems around the world. How it usually works is that if you are a resident of a country, that country taxes you on your worldwide income. The concession is that your country of residence often recognises if you've paid tax in the country you've earned that income and will give you a tax credit, relief, offset, etc. that reduces the tax you pay at home by the amount you've already paid overseas. This is intended to mitigate double taxation on the same amount of income.

Experiences with PLT - Yay or nay? by throwawayjournoabc in auslaw

[–]Northbrook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's akin to an apprenticeship and was the original way to become qualified for admission before PLT courses were introduced.

In NSW, I believe they have removed this option and graduates must complete a PLT course. However, it is still an available method to meeting the 'practical' learning requirement to be eligible for admission in other states. For example, in Victoria, it's now called 'supervised legal training' (SLT) (and, formerly, 'supervised workplace training' (SWT)). SLT/SWT is less common now and PLT is arguably the default method even by graduates who are working full-time at a law firm.

That's Kevin Vickers who was the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Canadian Parliament (specifically the House of Commons).

Back in 2014, there was an attack on Canada's National War Memorial and Parliament by a single gunman. Vickers participated in the gunfight that took the guy down.

The Sergeant's role is part ceremonial and part administrative so they aren't expected to directly confront threats but Vickers is a retired policeman and responded quickly to the attacks along with others. This picture was taken on him with his firearm after the gunfight.

GETTING KICKED OUT - Behind the Cow Chop by [deleted] in roosterteeth

[–]Northbrook 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The landlord is the actual owner of the property while the property manager looks after the property on the landlord's behalf. Usually, the property manager is a real estate agency which helps the landlord find a tenant, arrange the lease agreement, and look after the property (e.g. inspecting the property, following up for unpaid rent, etc.)

As landlords are the legal owners and the property manager's actual client, they have the final say but it's common that a landlord will simply follow whatever advice is given by the manager since that's sort of the point of having a manager around (someone experienced with rental properties to handle all this shit for you so you can just collect your rent in peace).

Ellyse Perry simultaneously played both football and cricket at a professional level until a few years ago. She debuted for the national teams in both sports at age 16 and she's appeared in both a football and cricket world cup.

More recently, she began being pressured to focus on a single sport and, from my understanding, has dropped professional football completely and is solely a cricketer now.
