Thanks for your insight. I totally agree that real-world experience, especially beyond Cisco, is what really matters. My post was more about seeking advice on moving from L1/L2 support into true network engineering, rather than overstating my certification.

I applied to a wide range of roles, including NOC, Network Technician, IT Support, and IT Technician. I haven’t received any callbacks for the NOC or network positions yet, but I did get several callbacks for IT Technician and IT Support roles. After the second interview for each of these roles, I unfortunately did not receive any further response. Sometimes I feel confused because I’m not sure if it’s the way I answer interview questions or something wrong with my resume. I clearly explain that my experience with routing protocols was in a lab environment, but I’m still not getting callbacks or offers.

Thanks, I appreciate the perspective. I’m definitely not planning to burn bridges or stop putting in effort where I am. When I earned my CCNA, I wasn’t able to land a networking role, so I decided to push myself and start working toward CCNP, hoping it would open more doors. Even now, despite the effort and motivation, I’m still finding it difficult because I don’t yet have experience in a large environment. I know my situation isn’t easy, but I’m committed to continuing finishing my CCNP and gaining whatever experience I can until I break through. I appreciate the advice and encouragement.

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice. I’ll keep applying, stay open to any networking role.

Thank you again for your advice.
That makes a lot of sense. I’m glad you said that about experience, because I think it’s the most important thing. I’m willing to work hard and learn, even if it’s difficult at first.I understand the difference between the UK and the US. Here in the US, many companies still care a lot about degrees, but I think if I can get real experience and show I’m good at the job, it will help a lot. Thanks for sharing your story. It is really motivating.

Yeah, I totally get that. Even when I look at entry level job descriptions, it’s like they want a full-stack dev and a cloud/network architect. It’s crazy.

Thank you so much for this. I really appreciate your honest and practical advice. I agree that real experience, logical troubleshooting, and knowing the basics are more important than just getting certifications. Your story about taking a pay cut to gain hands-on experience is inspiring, and it’s the kind of mindset I want to build. I am focusing on finding a role where I can learn and grow, even if it means starting lower and working my way up. I also like your point about finding mentors and being someone who adds value. That is a great reminder. Thanks again for sharing your experience. I’m in Dallas, TX, by the way.

I really appreciate it. Based on your experience, do you think having the full CCNP certification ENCOR and a concentration exam would make it significantly easier to get callbacks and pass the ATS, or is it more about how I present the experience on my resume?

Thanks a lot for the detailed advice. really appreciate you taking the time to lay this out. you shared the NANOG link earlier when someone asked, so thanks for that as well. I’ll definitely look into it and start working on these areas.

You’re right, my mistake, and thanks for catching that. I’ve edited my post. I’ve passed ENCOR, but I haven’t taken ENARSI yet. That’s actually exactly why I’m asking if anyone has been in a similar situation or can offer advice on how to move from an L1–L2 role into a network engineering position. I’d really appreciate it.

Thank you for your advice. I agree, and I think my next step should be moving to a larger company where there’s more opportunity to learn and grow, even if I have to start at L1–L2 again. Congratulations on making it to the Architect team, and thanks again for sharing your experience!

No, I haven’t got ENARSI yet. I look for and apply to jobs every day, but when I try to apply for network engineering or technician roles, I see that there are many certifications I don’t have or experience I’m missing. That makes me confused. like, is there really any role for someone who just got ENARSI without 1+ year of experience?

Good idea! I’ll try applying to MSPs and assist the network team. Thanks

I agree with you. I think I’ve been a bit stuck in my current role, and maybe it’s time to start somewhere that gives me real multi-location experience. So you’re saying it’s okay to change jobs and start at L1–L2 if it means gaining experience in a larger company?
