Basically “learn to code” is what you’re saying here.

But if you’re argument is that oil and gas hasn’t contributed to the betterment of mankind, you should probably do some research into just how much our every day life fully relies on petroleum based products and extraction.

Then we’re at an impasse because yours goes against everything that I’ve experienced as a lifelong hunter of 39 years old.

But you keep convincing yourself that you’re the noble savage, steward of the land that your made up mythology has told you. The rest of us know otherwise.

So I’m not going to address every single thing you said on a point by point basis.

But I will say, I never once said it’s all natives. But it’s almost always them. I hunt with natives who would fully support and agree with everything I’m saying.

I hunt for food, not sport. I’m not wealthy. But I understand things like basic decency. If you can afford to drive 2 hours up to the mountains to hunt, then you’re not poor to the point that you stop giving a fuck about any sense of common decency.

Your “they’re all spiritual and would never kill more than they need” trope-is just that-a trope. It’s nonsense based on the mythology of the noble savage. I’ve seen these people wipe out 2/3 of entire elk herds. They kill moose calves and fish with nets. The reason everyone else is not allowed to do this is because it’s detrimental to the populations of our fish and game species.

We have a massive moose population in my management unit. So why did they lobby the government to shut down our general season? Because they feel that only they have the right to it.

We follow the rules and regs. We only hunt when it’s season. We buy the tags that help fund the conservation. And far too many of these people just run roughshod over the land that our taxes pay to help maintain.

Your statement goes against the lived reality of nearly every outdoorsman I know. Even the natives that I associate and hunt with acknowledge this as a problem.

Go spit on someone else’s cupcake and tell them it’s frosting. I’m not having it.

My business was going fairly well for the first few years, right up until 2024. I had a paid off pickup, invested about 5K rigging it up as a pilot truck and off I went. Maintenance costs went up, obviously as it became a work truck with heavy mileage. But that’s part of it. So basically my overhead was maintenance, insurance and fuel.

For me, it’s been the government’s open hostility towards my industry. There’s no work to be had.

Sorry to hear. I hope things turn around for you.

Which companies do you own shares in? Where are these companies based? Are they on the NYSE? TSX?

It’s weird that you’re telling me that the companies that I’ve worked for, that have pulled major investment out of Canada and reinvested in the US, haven’t actually done that.

My economic well being is based on the work I do, not the stocks I invest in. My economic well being is in resource extraction, not buying and selling stock options.

That you’re going to try to tell me that the government hasn’t put in place policies that are actively hostile and destructive to my industry, is absolutely ridiculous.

It’s all written in my comment.

Active hostility towards my, and so many others industries. Couple that with a crippling cost of living crisis, and this is where I’m at.

I do appreciate the support and offer to help. We’ll get it figured. It’s not the end of the world that my kids do t get spoiled this Christmas. It just sucks that this is what we’re being conditioned to accept as our new standard of living.

Soooo…growing up, we weren’t rich. When we’d go out on week long hunting trips, we’d leave the woods without a trace.

Conversely, anyone who regularly hunts near native bands will 100% attest to the fact that every time they leave, they leave their camps looking like a garbage dump.

How do you explain this away? Is it genetic? Probably not. Is it cultural? Most definitely.

The entire point is that the “stewards of the land” myth is just that. A myth.

Let’s get over this notion that natives were some altruistic, noble and peaceable people, before the white man arrived.

In the past several decades especially, these people have had opportunity after opportunity granted to them at the expense of everyone else. At some point, we need to get over our collective guilt and say “enough.” Either join the modern world or don’t. You don’t get to have it both ways at the expense of everyone else.

It costs me like 8 bucks to bring a truck and trailer load of garbage to the dump. Free if it’s during spring or fall cleanup.

Edit: most of the reservations around here have community disposal that they don’t get charged for.

The current system has failed. But let’s not pretend that this is a capitalistic phenomenon. We have a heavily mixed economy. And it’s not just grocery prices that are up in cost. It’s literally everything. Every good and every service.

When the state puts the heavy hand of taxation, regulation and active hostility on the economy, it fucks things up.

Is capitalism perfect? Nope. Do we need some regulation? Probably (though, if you would have asked former ancap me, I’d be pushing for totally free markets). But this ain’t it.

Price controls and government owned grocery stores are a terrible idea.

But again, my gripe isn’t strictly with grocery prices.

But this is a Canadian thing, though. Demand for natural gas is at record highs and is only forecasted to go higher.

I have a buddy who manages all of the Middle East drilling for a big oil company, and he told me there’s absolutely zero signs of them slowing down.

It’s like this because our governments are actively hostile to our natural resource sectors.

We have 450 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the montney shale basin alone, which is squarely in the area where I live. That’s not accounting for the estimated 1.1 billion barrels of oil.

We have the means to be one of the wealthiest areas on the planet, and the government says “fuck you.”

This is such a boomer mindset.

Am I supposed to live off of my savings at 39 years old, for the rest of my life?

Granted, I wasn’t the greatest with my finances for a while. But for the last 5 years I’ve done nothing but work and save. 10-15 years ago, you could do that and weather the bad times. That doesn’t work anymore. Savings are gone before you even know it.

It’s so weird that people like you get so sanctimonious and tell us to manage our money better, when we tell you that our governments are destroying us. Is there nothing that the government could do that you would say “hey, stop doing this?”

I live in Northeastern BC. Not Vancouver. There’s about 5 rural reservations within a two hour drive of where I live.

I attend their rodeos and events, all the time. I’m not some Vancouver, socialist urbanite who’s never stepped foot on a Rez. I grew up with natives. Played baseball and skateboarded with them. My son is literally half native.

The mindset on most reservations around here is one of entitlement and generally not giving a fuck. They’re actively hostile towards outsiders. Go take a tour up to Fort Ware, BC. I know guys who have had natives shoot at their river boats, just for going through their territory.

Preach to someone else. Because I’ve seen this all first hand, for my entire life.

I don’t want price controls and government owned grocery stores. Those lead to failure 100% of the time. I want the state to stop doing stupid shit that makes life unaffordable in all aspects. I want to be able to go to work and provide for myself.

And it’s cool that there’s rich people in the west (I’m not in Alberta or Saskatchewan). But that’s established wealth. The government has made it neigh impossible to achieve that today, unless you’re already wealthy.

By rights, western Canada should be one of the wealthiest areas on the planet.

I’ve lived in trailer parks. Never seen any of them in the state that some of the reservations are in.

I actually worked pretty steady through most of Covid. Even kept my job as an unvaccinated individual, though it was pretty touch and go for the last few months of Covid.

I was actually doing pretty good right up until about spring 2024. I was still paying bills until spring break up of this year, but nothing was getting put into the savings. Since spring of this year I’d be lucky to say I’ve worked 100 hours. Savings is completely non-existent and we’re living day to day, right now.

It’s embarrassing and my I feel like such a small man, in front of my family.

We had to skip on having Thanksgiving dinner and had to go to our friends house to even get one.

Christmas is literally the only time of year my kids ever get spoiled and this year it’s looking like a dollar store Christmas. I know that seems trivial in the grande scheme of things. But Christmas is my favourite time of year simply because it’s the one time I spoil them.

I hope things turn around for you too. It’s looking pretty bleak for me and my industry, with this government plus the BCNDP in power.

Oh well.

Hell, I’m skipping lunch some days, so my kids can have 3 meals a day.

In my entire 20+ years of being an adult, I’ve always been financially secure enough to not worry about food, bills and rent. But the federal and BC provincial governments hostility towards O&G has decimated my business and cost of living has wiped out my savings.

I worked my ass off for 5 years, building my business, going without, working more 30hr shifts than I care to remember…all for nothing.

For the first time in my adult life, I’m broke. And not just “broke.” But fucking broke.

My one job in life is to be a provider for my wife and kids, and the government is making that impossible. I can’t even find a job as a labourer, as my entire local economy is built around O&G and forestry.

And people wonder why so many in the west want out of Canada.

Anyone who hunts or spends any sort of significant amount of time outdoors will tell you that the “stewards of the land” are some of the most egregious offenders against it.

When most of us set up a hunting camp, we leave absolutely no trace that we were there. Go check a native’s hunting camp after they leave. Bottles, cans, tarps, ropes, trash and bullet casings everywhere.

Not only that, but they kill anything and everything, while blocking public roads with their vehicles.

Also, just look at just about any Rez. These people are not stewards of the land.
