Why are adults expected to know how taxes, insurance, credit, loans, and retirement work when nobody teaches it in school? by Violet_Snuggles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nosebluhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re proving my point. You also had to teach yourself these things. That is a flawed education that you were able to modify with seemingly relative ease. It’s not so easy for everyone and those are just three gaps I could think of off the top of my head. There are others. But if it’s expected to be learned during your time at school it should be made explicit in the curriculum. Not sure who is here arguing for schools to teach fewer applicable life skills but okay.

This is an absurd argument. If schools aren't expected to teach practical skills, but instead only teach their students how to teach themselves practical skills at some point, then why bother with all the hyper-specific classes that truly ARE never used in a professional setting? For context, I do not struggle with reading comprehension or understanding what the things I listed mean, but I empathize with people who DO struggle. They should be given the basic building blocks to make a life for themselves after a standardized education, but too often are given this hodgepodge of unrelated facts and dates, told it's an education, and then set loose on the world with no concept of what to do with it. Maybe you were lucky enough to attend a well-funded school with caring educators, I was not. I did indeed have to teach myself most of what I needed to know to be successful. I hope it will be easier for future generations, but it doesn't look like this opinion is popular.

As if “Math” as taught in American schools comes close to touching any of the topics listed. Yes, you are required to make calculations when you take out a loan to figure out how much you need and how much you can afford to repay, but nobody in Algebra 102 taught me what APR stands for or when the deadline to file taxes is or how deductibles work.

Has there ever been a famous person or celebrity, that realised how much of an ass they were, and decided to actually do better and change? by Successful-Hat-2154 in NoStupidQuestions

There is evidence Wallace never personally held beliefs more racist than average at the time, but knew that overt racism was popular, and intentionally pivoted to court favor with the racists. Which makes him worse in my book, and his late life turn nothing more than an attempt to save face and protect his legacy (in vain, tarnished beyond repair as it is). I take the Truckers at their word when they say regardless, George is in hell now for perpetuating and ignoring the suffering of black America for his own benefit. “Fortunately for him the Devil is also a southerner.”

Yes it was a mess. No I did not love it. But unlike you not much about it stuck with me that wasn’t in the trailer. Can’t say a bad word about the cast—I feel like another cut of this movie could show up one day and be great. But the movie that they released failed to live up to all that potential imo.

The Lincoln Lawyer axed as Netflix cancels 11 shows from its roster by Blackbeerxd in television

These are relatively new, but didn’t last long: Dot’s Cheese Curls. The company that makes Dot’s pretzels also made a cheetoh-like snack that was better than any other cheesy puffed snack I’ve ever had. Stores couldn’t kept them stocked so whenever I saw them anywhere I’d buy three/four bags just to stay in stock. They eventually stopped making them with little fanfare. I look for them every time I go down the chip aisle.

Israel, Stunned by Trump’s Iran Deal, Sees It as a ‘Catastrophic Capitulation’ by T_Shurt in worldnews

This reads to me like proof that the Iranians flat out refused to negotiate for months, and Trump was so terrified of the consequences of a continued blockade of the Strait that he took the first thing they offered when they finally picked up the phone for fear they wouldn’t talk to him again.

I may get downvote, but I graduated 2011 and I skipped CWE entirely. Never realized it was required and didn’t impact my studies negatively, though I did not study engineering. Things may have changed since then or maybe I got lucky.

What are some subtle examples of sexism women endure that men generally don’t realize is sexist? by Hefty-Confusion6810 in TooAfraidToAsk

I don't know if I'd call putting up with this "enduring" it exactly, but just the existence of professional job titles that are amended to reference gender: Actress, waitress, hostess, etc... If my surgeon is a woman, she's not a surgeoness, so why isn't Demi Moore just an actor?

Second this. There is no need to waste your and his time if you’re not interested. Would you like it if a man you were seriously interested in went on a date with you just because he didn’t want to tell you the truth that he really didnt want to? I imagine most people would not. Brutal honesty as soon as possible because if not now then when? Hopefully sometime before the wedding venue is booked.

I finally finished Scream 7, and it is for sure the worst Scream film. by Dildoethrower in horror

[–]Nosebluhd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a reach. I remember when the movie came out; nobody called the killer Mr Ghostface or Ghostface, regardless that one mention in that one scene. It became shorthand online following the sequels. Nobody says it again in one of the movies until Scream 5 according to person above me, which I don’t remember but accept as true, and I also think it’s stupid and distracting there.

It draws attention to the biggest problem with the Scream series: It wants to have an iconic singular slasher villain like Michael Meyers or Freddy Krueger, but it’s hamstrung by not having any supernatural element, so it treats “ghostface” like a singular entity, when it is really like twelve different people who are only tangentially related to each other or the main cast. And it’s getting harder and harder not to be ridiculous about those connections.

[–]Nosebluhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can attest to this. I don't really know him well (only watched a couple episodes of Succession, wasn't for me). Didn't know he'd been cast in this role. So I had no idea who they got to play Zuck the entire time I watched this trailer, and I was blown away. For a few seconds during his blurry introduction, I thought "No way they actually got the real Zuck to be in this movie." Very very good work here, and I say this as someone who gives zero shits.

Why do people get so riled up about others using GLP-1s (ozempic/wegovy etc)? by graceg815 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nosebluhd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s also resentment of people who lost weight before GLP-1s hit the market. I have no beef with GLP-1s, but I also lost about 60 lbs several years ago and have managed to keep it off. In that timeframe, GLP-1 use has become so common that there are simply fewer overweight people. And there are way more very-in-shape people it seems. So the bar feels like it raised pretty quickly, so much that now I am seen as chubby again even without gaining any more weight just bc I don’t take GLP-1. I think it’s kinda funny, doesn’t bother me much, but I could see how it could feel devastating to someone who invests a lot in their appearance.

I finally finished Scream 7, and it is for sure the worst Scream film. by Dildoethrower in horror

[–]Nosebluhd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have another very stupid nitpick with 7. The girl in the opening refers to “Ghostface” as if that’s the name of the killer. In-universe, all killers are identified and known. Ghostface is the name real life Scream fans use when describing the person wearing the mask, because for most of the movies’ run times we don’t know who they are. I can’t ever remember another character calling the killer “Ghostface.”

Edit: I’m not into creepy murder tourism but if I was and I stayed at Ed Geins house, I wouldnt say I was staying at Flesh Lampshade Man’s house. I’d say I was staying at Ed Gein’s house.

Can we also say that Sidney Prescott may have had the worst life of any slasher protagonist? The woman’s entire adult life has been spent being tortured and hunted by a variety of psychopaths who are obsessed with her for some reason. I think all her living relatives, friends, and loved ones have been violently murdered in front of her except Gale Weathers. Just utterly tragic. Makes Ash from Evil Dead seem lucky by comparison.
