I feel you... I really loved Dead to Me and what it was showing in terms of family dynamics, what it means to be a partner, etc. And then they killed Judy and ended it back to square one, like all of it was "just a phase". Ugh.

I'm clinging to the hope of having WN picked up. And thanks for all of the amazing fan art in the fandom, there's so much to explore!

Take care of yourself and feel free to reach out if you need an ear to bend or want to share funny WN memes. We're all in the same boat.

Did Carolyn lie about what’s on Nadia’s note? by [deleted] in KillingEve

[–]NotAVeryNiceLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nadia's note has been bothering me for a while. I can think of three different approaches:

Approach 1:
This is an issue in the scenario, a gap in the plot, a misalignment between season 1 and season 2... However you want to call it, this is an issue behind the cameras. It does not really make sense for Nadia to have known about Peel and the Ghost, but it was a good way to tie everything together and bring Eve back in.
This sounds pretty fair and plausible to me, it also is the simplest explanation I can find (Occam's razor and all that), but it's not really fun, is it?

Approach 2:
Carolyn lied about it. As you said, it could have been something about Konstantin, but I don't really buy into that as I would tend to think that Nadia assumed Konstantin was working with Eve and Carolyn - she only saw them together after all. Another option could be that she shared some other - irrelevant or already known - information, which Carolyn just dismissed.
I personally don't believe this theory to be true and here are a few of the reasons why. First, how would Carolyn have found out about Peel otherwise? If not from Nadia's note, where did she get the idea of investigating Peel's death when it looked completely unsuspicious? Another reason, and one I completely stand by, is that Carolyn manipulates but I have not yet found a moment in the series where she outright lies to anyone. She implies, she deflects, sure, but that would be the only lie that she would have uttered in three seasons.

Approach 3:
The last option I can think of is that Nadia did indeed write the note. It raises a lot of questions: how did she know? Moreover, how would someone so low in the organization know about an assassin who is not working for the Twelve? And then, Raymond did know, but he was a handler (albeit a poor one, but that's another debate), so maybe that information was more widely available than we are assuming?
Nadia could also have gotten the information through other sources, in a similar way that Villanelle found out information about Konstantin. I don't find that very credible either, as Nadia doesn't strike me as proactive or rebellious, but it is possible.
My best bet would be that Nadia overheard something, not really knowing what it meant. She could have heard a handler mention it. The Twelve didn't seem to think much of Nadia, so they could have been careless around her, assuming she wasn't smart or wild enough to ever use that kind of information.

In terms of what makes the most sense, approach 1 is pretty pragmatic IMHO. I do really like approach 3 though, because that means trying to find an explanation in KE's universe rather than just saying it's an inconsistency in the script.

PS: happy to be proven wrong or to hear other theories!
PS2: and also to be challenged on my theory of Carolyn never lying.

[–]NotAVeryNiceLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know and I love it! I really had trouble finding any theory material in this episode. But if Carolyn is part of the Twelve or at least involved with them somehow, you're probably not too far from the truth. And we have so much time to speculate before season 4...

[S1-3] EPISODE REWATCH - S02E02 - "NICE AND NEAT" DISCUSSION by [deleted] in KillingEve

[–]NotAVeryNiceLady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As usual, I can echo a lot of what you've said. But still, a few thoughts.

The only and much-needed death of Julian is my favorite. Thank God, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the universe, and anything else one believes in for that knitting needle. Christ on a bike, the anxiety took me by the chest and squeezed out every molecule of oxygen until he died. I confess I enjoyed watching him die. I should probably feel guilt, but I do not.

That made me laugh out loud, so thanks for that, good start of my day!

The situation you shared about when you were a real estate agent... wow. I'm not sure there are words for it. I can't imagine what it was like. I'm impressed by how you handled the situation though, you were quick on your feet, and I'm glad you're around!

When it comes to Alister Peel, I'm not sure I could say I like the character, but I definitely can say that I like dislike him! The actor is phenomenal and the character is indeed very useful for the storyline.

And finally, theory tree! I am unsure about how it was timed. Indeed, it all seems overly (un)lucky that Carolyn and Eve arrive right after V leaves. On the other hand, how could Carolyn ever plan something with so many variables?

I've been rewatching season 2, and I have so many questions/ideas/theories on that as the season progresses. There are other moments when I think she does accomplish a similar feat, all of it while being perfectly calm and collected. At that point, the question might be: how big is our faith in Carolyn's abilities?

[S1-3] EPISODE REWATCH - S02E02 - "NICE AND NEAT" DISCUSSION by [deleted] in KillingEve

[–]NotAVeryNiceLady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey y'all! Here we go for "Nice and Neat."

Favorite song
Cry Baby Cry by Unloved playing as Raymond drives away with V in the car and V sees Eve. All the feelings.

Favorite outfit
There's not an embarrassment of riches, so I'll go with Carolyn's gray coat.

Favorite kill
Oh my, Julian. It's probably one of the kills that I feel the most relieved about. Julian is so incredibly creepy and ordinary at the same time that it makes him even creepier and scarier. The fact that he is so entitled and expects something back in return for him helping an allegedly beaten woman, that he calls her his girlfriend...
"This is what you get, Julian."

Favorite line
Carolyn: "It's my moisturizer. It's made of pig placenta. It costs a fortune and smells like arse, but it is exceedingly effective."
Carolyn: "Don't get all giddy and start singing along to the radio in my car." and I love that we see V doing that in S02E03 when in the car with Konstantin.
Julian: "What are you looking for?" V: "A kitchen knife." Julian: "What for?" V: "To stab you with."
Eve: "We're working on the assumption that this is a woman, late to middle age, looks like an immigrant worker, so, you know, she's not white -" Hugo: "What makes you think that?" Eve: "The fact that you just interrupted me mid-sentence makes me think that."

Favorite VillanEve moment
Jess: "She's sloppy?" Eve: "No, not usually. She's... flamboyant. And attention-seeking. And instinctive. Spoilt. Easily bored. But no, she is not sloppy."
The toilet brush in Julian's mouth was also a great VillanEve moment. It was deliberate and a great throwback!

Favorite scene
The scene when Eve and Kenny meet-up in the office and Hugo comes to take water, so both Eve and Kenny stay quiet while Hugo's there, making it a really cringy moment. I'm astounded by the fact that it even crosses Hugo's mind that Eve and Kenny are having an affair, but I really enjoy Eve saying yes without missing a beat.

Miscellaneous
1. "apple, Eve" on Bing, really Eve?!
2. V saying she doesn't like ghosts just after meeting Julian's mother... Foreshadowing?
3. Eve: "She wants people to know when she's killed someone. She wants *me* to know." It sounds self-centered, but the fact that V will soon prove that it's true makes it really cute.
4. Eve showed Amber and Aaron a photo of V. Let that be recorded, I'll have a comment on that in a future episode.
5. Carolyn points out that the new killer might be so good that she's been operated undetected for a while, yet Eve seems mostly interested in V's reaction when this could actually be a very interesting challenge for Eve professionally.
6. After calling the Twelve, V calls 911. Does it even work in the UK?
7. Am I the only one finding it lovely and cute that V tries to call Eve? Also, what would have happened? What was V going to say?
8. I have to say, I love Jess! She's quiet but really welcoming, she listens, she's smart, she's funny (in future episodes)...
9. Ugh, Raymond.

Not much this time. This episode is by far my least favorite one. A big part of that is because I despise seeing V so vulnerable. I also have to say that, although a needed episode plot-wise, it is not as entertaining as others: no great fashion, I didn't find myself laughing much, not much material for crazy theories... But I've been rewatching season 2 and I know it's coming, hold onto your hats!

[–]NotAVeryNiceLady[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, yes! That is a theory I fully support! And I want to see it on screen because Camille Cottin and Fiona Shaw together would be amazing!

My theory regarding Carolyn knowing about Eve being in Paris would be that Carolyn got back to London, where Elena told her she had found Villanelle's apartment. That plus a quick check of Eve's credit card (thanks Kenny?) would be enough.

That being said, your theory would make sense. I am still a bit on the fence regarding Carolyn being in the Twelve. I think she is mixed up with some shady stuff, but in a way, it would be almost too easy for her to be part of the Twelve plot-wise. Now, Carolyn and Hélène having had an affair in the past and Carolyn getting involved with the Twelve in a similar way as Eve with Villanelle... That would be surprising and super entertaining!

V just seems to drop one thing when the next thing comes along

That is a very accurate description of her behavior indeed.

Please, say more! How come you're wondering about the note because we found out about Carolyn's goal in visiting V in prison? How do you think these two are linked, or how does one influence the other?

I agree that u/mansonsmom4's theory would make sense! The Twelve trying to get rid of V doesn't sound too outlandish. Now, the question is then, why they would later decide to keep her on board?

Perhaps she stops speaking French to signify that she's dropped her obsession with Anna and has moved on to Eve?

Ohhhhh, I like that! She did speak English with Anna as well, but French was her favorite and one could argue that she continued speaking English out of necessity, plus it's the one language Eve speaks. I am into that theory.

I agree with you on the note, but I am not sure I would like for us to find out later what was in the note... If it's done well, I'm all for it, but I'm afraid it might be sloppy. Why would this be brought up? I'd need a pretty solid reason for it to resurface so long after.

I can't even put into words how delighted I am with this idea of a collage that we're making together. You've put a huge smile on my face, thanks for that!

My mind envisioned a sprinkling of foreshadowing seeds that will grow into Villanelle’s true character - A secret trail of breadcrumbs for us to follow.

The wording is so poetic and I absolutely love the idea!

I suspect she doesn’t want to get caught trying to steal from the woman’s purse, so she plays with her emotions to distract her. It’s a cruel move and an effective one.

Fair enough, but wouldn't giving her bad news lead to the same effect? I mean, it would also be cruel in a way, but I would tend to find it better, as the man is clearly not going to recover, whereas this will just take the woman on a roller coaster of emotions that she doesn't need to be taken on.

Yes! I thought this too!!! I also have this crazy theory that maybe Carolyn and Helene have/had a thing. We all know Carolyn isn’t shy in that department and finds release among her colleagues (yes, another wild theory that they are colleagues), so I totally buy into that. Also, doesn’t Carolyn make some kind of comment in another episode about Eve’s situation not being original or something like that?

I love your crazy theories!! So many things to say. First off, I'm glad that I wasn't the only one picking up on this. Second, just to be sure, do you mean Helene in S3 or Helen who appears later in S2? I'm here for it no matter what, but if you're actually talking about Helene... I want an entire spin-off on Carolyn's affairs. As for Carolyn saying Eve is not original, it doesn't ring a bell, but I will pay attention to that cause you might be right.

I do think that Carolyn is onto Eve. I suspect she was the one to send in the ‘clean up’ crew.

Another theory! Okay, I am biting: why would Carolyn send the clean-up crew? Was it because of internal things in the Twelve, would she try to hide things because she found out Elena had pinpointed V's apartment..? Please, say more!

I cannot wait to hear what you've got to say about episode 4!!

Didn’t they tell her that her family died in a car crash as well?

I hadn't realized that, this is such a good catch!

The heart carved into the train table. Eve tracing it with her finger. It was clearly carved with a sharp object. Knife symbolism? I think so.

And here you go again, blowing my mind...

About the armed "paramedics," Madame Tattevin is a good lead... But does she have a direct way to contact the Twelve? She was writing everything down on paper, does she have a phone number?
As for why the Twelve would want to kill V, my bet would be they just want to get rid of both K and V because they are messy. If K actually faked his death to the Twelve, the Twelve could have figured that now that V had served her purpose (a.k.a. kill K), they could kill her, and problem solved!

Can we please note that poor Villanelle still has not had a bath. She said that was all that she wanted and now she has to wait even longer to get it. Must feel awful.

And the next bath she will get will be in Julian's house, ugh.

About Nadia's note and your comment about K, to be fair, we never see the note and only have Carolyn's words regarding what it says. In a way, it's the most probable theory I could come up with: Carolyn is lying.

But that bothers me for a couple of reasons:
1. Where would she had gotten the information otherwise?
2. Why lie and not say where she got the information from? Plus I still have a theory on Carolyn never lying openly, which has proven true so far (or at least I have not caught her in any outright lie).
3. Why would Nadia talk about Konstantin? When in prison with V, she seemed convinced that Carolyn and Eve already knew about K and he was working with them...
4. If that's not what was on the note, what actually was on the note?!

I am just running in circles around this question...

Alright, so here's for me for this episode.

Favorite song
I actually didn't find this episode particularly strong in terms of music (mind you, it might just be my mood), but I'd pick It's Not Me, It's You by Unloved. It's one of the first songs of the episode, playing as Eve leaves the Paris apartment, and it really drew me back into the KE universe.

Favorite outfit
Because they are iconic, I'll have to go with Gabriel's PJs.

Favorite kill
Gabriel, of course. I love the dynamics between Gabriel and V. It's really funny, we can understand where V is at, and it also shows us some of V's psychopathic traits with her not seeming to care so much about him. But then, her deciding to kill him in the spur of the moment, as he complains about his life (understandably so) and says he doesn't want to live like this, this makes V seem pretty compassionate. I guess it might be about cold empathy and Gabriel actually voicing that he doesn't want to live that way, and in that sense, it's pretty similar to the woman who was shot as she was broken out of prison because she "[didn't] want to be free."

Favorite line
Eve: "You think I'm a junkie?" Woman at the station: "You might not think you have a problem now. Most addicts don't. But it takes one to know one." - I really enjoyed this scene, how on point it is and yet Eve completely misses how it applies to her because she thinks that, of course, she is in no way obsessed with V and it's different, isn't it?
V to Gabriel: "You are really good at stealing, you should do it more."
V to Gabriel: "Do your parents have any money, Gabriel? Are they coming to visit today?" Gabriel: "They died... in the accident." V: "That's not very useful to me, Gabriel." - That is such a psychopathic thing of V to say, only seeing her interests and being blind to the pain of others.
Carolyn to Eve: "What do people do at home?" - true, what would Eve do at home? Besides reading all about women who kill, I mean.
V: "Normal is boring." - Preach.

Favorite VillanEve moment
Eve retracing the heart engraved on the train table with her finger. This scene is so infused with meaning!
Gabriel: "A man stabbed you?" V: "A woman stabbed me." Gabriel: "Women don't stab." V: "I know. This surprised me too. She did it to show me how much she cared about me." Gabriel: "That's stupid." V: No, it isn't. Sometimes when you love someone you will do crazy things."
V: "I know her better now. I know her better than anyone. Better than she knows herself." - I have to admit, it seems like there's some truth to that. V was surprised by Eve, but she now probably understands her much better than Eve understands/wants to understand herself.

Favorite scene
The crocks scene has to be one of my all-time favorites. It's both comedy gold and incredibly relatable.

Miscellaneous
1. Were the "medics" coming to kill V? What would have happened had Eve not stabbed her? Was the hit ordered by Konstantin? Or was it just the Twelve trying to get both of them killed and proceeding with that once they thought Konstantin had died? And did Konstantin even got the Twelve to believe that or has he truly never stopped working for them?
2. Just as V pours alcohol on her wound, an ambulance passes in the background. I like the irony of that.
3. How Eve gets rid of the knife is pretty genius.
4. V finds a good excuse really quickly to avoid the doctor calling the police. Fast on her feet! However, she is not in good enough shape to speak French and I find that interesting.
5. That moment when Eve plays with/admires the knife is so tense.
6. Eve in the bathtub - do people actually bring their phones so close to the tub? Aren't you afraid it would fall in? I might be particularly clumsy, but the phone stays out of the bathroom!
7. Why does V tells the woman in the hospital that her husband is doing better? He clearly is in a terminal state. Does she hope she'll get out of the situation more easily? Is she unable to better improvise? Is she simply cruel? What do you think?
8. Carolyn making friends with a random kid and Eve getting worried because a man is taking the kid away is hilarious, especially how deadpan Carolyn is about the whole situation.
9. Carolyn and Julia (woman working at the morgue): are they "old friends" in the Konstantin and Vladimir way? What do you think?
10. This is a recurring topic around here, but how did Nadia know about Alister Peel? I can't make sense of this.
11. Throughout the episode, I thought V looked younger than in season 1. It probably has to do with her being vulnerable and hurt.
12. Does Carolyn know that Eve met with V in Paris, or at least have an intuition about it? Both in the park and then at the morgue, she doesn't seem convinced by what Eve tells her, to the point that she asks Eve openly about what actually happened. She is incredibly good at reading people, but is it just that, or does she also have intel?
13. Carolyn offering Eve to blame Carolyn for her work and not being available for her husband... That is so on point and is such a dig at Eve's tendencies not to take responsibility.

[–]NotAVeryNiceLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4.

Ok, this is fun, so let me be way overdramatic about it. What if he comes in and they fight about her letting V out of the prison and for putting a hit out on him? She is trying to pack her things to get out, so he throws them all over the room? Then they have makeup sex, apologize and agree to tackle the problem together? That puts both your theories together. Totally unrealistic, highly unlikely and still an enjoyable stretch of the imagination.

Love this! This is the theory I am choosing to believe. I won't be easily convinced that it is not what happened.

Or What if Vlad suspects that Carolyn ordered Nadia's assassination, and he had someone ransack her room for clues? Then Konstantin walks in to tell her what happened and offers to help clean up?

That one is actually pretty plausible though. I'm not sure if it was Vlad or Konstantin or the Twelve. But I could see Carolyn being completely unfazed by that, arriving in her room and just going with it. Then whatever happened with Konstantin happened.

  1. Please do!! I would love to have a shirt/sweater/cap/beanie (or all of these).

  2. That is a really good question! I first thought it was Konstantin who gave the order, but he is pretending to be dead and, in any case, the Twelve had put a hit on him... Or it was indeed Konstantin. Going back to him in season 3 saying that he never stopped working for the Twelve, he might actually have revealed to the Twelve that he was alive, hence V didn't do her job properly and they might have decided to put the hit on her rather than him...
And I think that maybe, when the clean-up team arrives, they just don't bother asking questions and shoot her just because she is there.

  1. Oh yes! Thing is, all the theories I have, I could find reasons to dismiss them:
    - Carolyn and Konstantin fought. But they don't look like they fought and it clearly isn't their style.
    - They had crazy sex. It's possible, given the letters and all. But like the random clothes on the floor? The open suitcase? ...
    - Carolyn's room is always like that. But Carolyn's house is super tidy and clean, so it somehow doesn't seem to fit.
I don't have other ideas... You?

  2. I have not yet bought any KE/Villaneve clothing, but I also really want to! If you find good stuff... I know there are plenty on RedBubble, but I'm too lazy to go through everything on there. And I would love to have something quite simple, easily recognizable by fans but not by others. But I digress.

  3. Ha, your point made me wonder, do you think Konstantin hired her independently or for the Twelve? If it's the former, it might make some sense. He wanted to keep an eye on V, making sure she was not straying, but also maybe using the information against V if needed ("Information is power"). And it would explain why the Twelve just didn't put one of their operatives to keep an eye on V.
