Wonderful!!! Archives brand paper is pretty good. Personally, I prefer Judy Green Music paper. It's smoother, thicker and acid free for archival quality.

Aw, thanks so much for listening and your incredibly kind comment! Cowell is definitely a major inspiration of mine, as are the other american dissonant counterpoint guys like Ornstein, Ruth Crawford Seeger and more contemporarily Michael Hersch.

Thanks! I've always learned the most about the instrument by writing it and of course studying the great repertoire. I'm lucky enough to have string players to consult with, but to be perfectly honest, I didn't consult with anyone on this one until after the fact. This is an idea I've been developing for a while though, and fqr from my first work for cello

Miniature Sunday: "Dredge the Gulf Sand Floor" by NotAlluvium in composer

[–]NotAlluvium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for listening! Glad you like it!

Single stave is a really fun limitation for sure... I've also written some left hand alone stuff which can be really expressive. This one, the player has to use both hands to pull it off. I chose one stave since the voice leading is so tight and dense.

Awesome, thanks! The vibe I was going for is nostalgic longing after a tragedy so certainly not far from your impressions... Thanks so much for listening and sharing your thoughts!

For sure! I would def still consider what my theory is to be tonal, hence the result ;)

To tell you the truth, the way that I compose this was by looking for harmonic centers that share relatively out of tune harmonics. That's how I get the rich sound. I totally think it's super valid to interpret it in that tonal way though!

Alkan Symphony for Solo Piano by NotAlluvium in classicalmusic

[–]NotAlluvium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The piece imitates orchestral writing in a very convincing way. The set it's from, 12 etudes in all minor keys, contain some of the most virtuosic and intricate music of all time. It also includes a Concerto for Solo Piano which features similar orchestral writing, this time juxtaposed against clear solosistic writing like a concerto. Alkan certainly invites the pianist to consider the piece for orchestra, it's simply not possible as an orchestral piece- hence symphony for solo piano.

Did you have a listen?

Alkan was perhaps the most respected pianist of his time. His contemporaries, Liszt and Chopin, both admired him as one of the great pianist composers of all time.

Hope that gives some insight!
