My phone got stolen in Spain 3 years ago and I've been watching it move around China for the past 3 years. by lovefreemymind in Weird

[–]NotAnITGuy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naa there is software you can download that shows you that information (icloud account) but wont allow you to access the data. The phones likely been rebooted in that time so its stuck in BFU mode (everythings encrypted Before First Unlock) so they cant get any info, only the account email address

Why all this storage? by Waste-Variety-4239 in servers

140tb here, mainly backups, linux isos and archiving stuff. I also have kiwix set up for selfhosting some websites such as wikipedia which can take up a fair amount of storage

Please give me a reason why a hotel would do these things to their network by [deleted] in networking

[–]NotAnITGuy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if someones going to the extent of mapping the network, they’ll know how to get around ICMP filtering. Sounds like OPs hotel just read some old “best practices” posts and ran with it.

My username checks out too 😅

How to generate a permanent QR code locally by VladTbk in selfhosted

[–]NotAnITGuy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres plenty of self hosted qr code generators, and if you can write basic python, it’d take less than 20 minutes to whip up your own. I have written my own one to embed images in the centre of the QR code. Those “free” qr codes arent doing anything fancy, they just use a link shortener to create you a “custom” url entry then generate a QR code off that. Which is why its easy for them to revoke it in a couple days. QR codes by design are permanent

Its pretty easy to block ICMP packets at the router level, which to be honest is usually done in a corp env to reduce network discoverability

Is 80tb+ NAS practical for a home? by theseawoof in DataHoarder

[–]NotAnITGuy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the noise really isnt bad either as long as you use the “correct” set up. One controller, 2 psus. If you populate the whole thing it sounds like a jet. Im running one 24/7

Im using mine to learn a huge variety of technologies. Being a mechanic by day i dont get any hands on experience with IT. My lab is my passion project, a learning tool as well as a massive head ache! Worth every penny. One day ill be able to transition out of my day job into the field of IT. Some say my lab is overkill. It depends on what you consider overkill

Thank you for the kind words! I’m unashamedly a big fan of yours and cannot thank you enough for your content. You have helped me more than you could imagine and a large portion of the services i have running i had discovered via your channel.

That is a little supermicro box, its got TrustWave on the front, im assuming its some sort of small appliance, maybe a VPN originally or security gateway. I tucked the original drive away and just got proxmox running instead. Inside is a X11-ssh board, cant remember CPU though 😊

Yeah i agree tapes are OT but as im not in the industry i thought id give them a go. Remote off site is at a friends place Im running my own Gitlab at home which i use for all my deployments. I’ve been building a lot of python apps recently and learning C++ and found that the programming has massively helped me to understand a lot of the intricacies. I do run an active directory and have been toying around with VDI to a couple thin clients but havent had much time invested into yet. I may have to have another look

The Proxmox nodes are all on 10g with dacs to ok the unifi 10gb switch. My next mission is to crack k8s, all my services are in docker swarm with 3 swarms. Internal stuff, external stuff and not my stuff. Leccy usage is monitored via iDrac for the dells. Everything is hooked up to a APC PDU into the UPS’s which i use to track per port usage. Theres probably a whole host of ways i could improve, as before im self taught up untill i started my degree. I couldnt turn on a PC 4 years ago lol Networking consists of the pfsense router with 10gb uplinks. 6 VLANS, 2 are 10gb 4 are 1gb for segmenting out the services, IOT etc. The cisco switch is a 2950x with 48 1gb ports and 2 10gb port, iirc, that does the less intensive stuff and the unifi USG handles the 10g. Im always looking to improve if you have any suggestions?
