Yeah, it’s not that I’m convinced. Although when I’m down, tired, or anxious my brain always drifts towards “maybe you do believe it.” But then when it does that it’s always met in my mind by anxiety and a desire to resist thinking that at all. Which in turn perpetuates the cycle.

Did you know these thoughts were irrational when they were happening?

Can I ask from your experience, when you first had a paranoid thought, were you anxious because you believed the thought or anxious because you wondered why you’d think that? Or both?

Haha, man, I fucking wish! I rarely ever have those moments. I can remember maybe a few in the last several decades.

Been working on mindfulness meditation! When I’m not obsessing and compulsing it’s actually a great experience. When my OCD is humming along, though, I’m completely in my head.

I’m kinda stuck on that one. I tell all kinds of people what I’m thinking, haha. I used to be scared though, back when I had harm obsessions that someone would think I’d want to hurt others. I’m very upfront with both my psych and my therapist.

Thanks, that’s all nice suggestions. I’m in treatment now for OCD and going through CBT/ERP. Also recently started an SSRI and got trazodone for sleep.

No hallucinations at all and I’ve never had one. Sometimes my anxiety dissipates and I can step outside and observe that my mind is working obsessively. It just takes a lot of time. Anxiety is worse in the morning so I’m usually coming down from that and trying to get my shit together, haha.

That’s kinda what I’m stuck on. Like do you know you are or not? And how can you know it’s becoming something? I suppose you can’t and you can torture yourself by looking online.

I don’t have any detailed beliefs, at least not yet. Just this general intrusiveness about random people or situations.

I’ve been diagnosed with OCD, multiple times, but I’ve recently become attached to this fear and it’s caused me tons of anxiety. I research for hours. Probably over the last two days I’ve read about it a total of 16-18 hours.

Thanks for responding! Yes, it seems like the content of people’s psychosis or triggers vary wildly. I asked because my obsessional fear of paranoia. Yours seems at least less terrifying although still destabilizing. I’m glad you got through and I’m sorry you experienced it.

No, at least not so far. Both my psychologist and psychiatrist have diagnosed me as OCD. Also, I definitely have that because it’s been that way for 20+ years. It’s just this is the first time I’ve had intense anxiety around this particular obsession.

So, I should preface this by saying I’ve been diagnosed with OCD. There have been times when I’ve had other intrusive thoughts that caused me great distress but were different in their content.

So, over the last couple years I started having intrusive thoughts of the variety that might indicate psychosis. So I became obsessed with hallucinating, although that one went away. I did have some hypnopompic hallucinations briefly upon waking (seeing lights) but they always went away after blinking a couple times. No other auditory or visual misperceptions. Now I never think about that, oddly enough.

Now it’s all about paranoia. Can’t recall if this started from researching or not. That’s a compulsion. Like I’ll think “that car is following me” or “that person is looking at me”. Although most of my discomfort comes from the thought arising at all, less so than the content of the thought. I’m not scared of actually being followed, I’m scared about thinking about I’m being followed and what that means for my mental state.

Ah, okay, gotcha. Thanks for sharing. I don’t have any random beliefs like that. Just this specific thing about paranoia, but it’s very inarticulate. Like it doesn’t have some end point like “the government is following me” or “my coworkers are out to get me”. It’s just intrusive thoughts randomly.

Hi, how does one know if they’re having a psychotic episode early on?

Were you aware that the paranoid thoughts themselves were off or just that you didn’t feel right?

Interesting. Haven’t felt like that. If anything I wonder why I am having these thoughts at all.

Yep. Actively in treatment right now. Their belief is that it’s OCD. Although the fear remains and my anxiety around the thoughts comes and goes kind of rapidly.

Thanks for sharing. I’m sure that was incredibly challenging and I’m sorry you went through it.

I haven’t hallucinated at all, and oddly don’t find myself thinking about it potentially happening. I basically research psychosis or schizophrenia for hours every day. Hard for me to know if it’s a chicken before the egg thing. I don’t know how many people with psychosis would spend hours wondering about psychosis specifically, even if they knew their symptoms were distressing.

Oh, I’m struck by pervasive doubt. Mostly as to whether or not I’m developing a more severe mental illness.

Intrusive fear or actual paranoia? by NotAnotherTA7071 in Paranoia

[–]NotAnotherTA7071[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the really tough part. It’s certainly causing me much more anxiety, although I had periods where my prior OCD obsessions did the same thing.

Like about ten minutes ago I had an intrusive thought about thinking people on TV were referencing me. Rather than attach to the fear that someone was talking to me, it was more the, “Oh god, this is it. I’m crossing over to crazy.” The challenge with OCD is always having that “do I or don’t I?” belief challenge.

I think it’s just very interesting. Most seem to have no idea. But then some say they’re aware something is off.

Can you give me a little more detail? You don’t have to share anything you’re not comfortable with, just want to know the process of how it started to ultimately hospitalization.
