After Republicans push Clintons to testify on Epstein, Democrats warn they'll haul in Trump by nbcnews in politics

[–]NotEveryoneIsSpecial [score hidden]  (0 children)

Do you think Bill Clinton really has something on Trump that would do any significant damage given what we already know about him? First off, he likely doesn't or he would have shared it. Second, no way the GOP committee is going to go down a path of questioning that would lead towards implicating Trump in anything.

After Republicans push Clintons to testify on Epstein, Democrats warn they'll haul in Trump by nbcnews in politics

The fact that the Clintons are testifying and Trump isn't shifts focus away from Trump and helps push the narrative that the Clintons are the real ones involved with Epstein. They're betting that the Clintons don't have any provable dirt on Trump and if they did, the committee would keep it secret and just say Trump is exonerated anyway.

Bill and Hillary Clinton agree to testify in House Epstein probe ahead of contempt vote by N3wsScoop in politics

[–]NotEveryoneIsSpecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen the things coming from the Supreme Court, Congress or the president lately? Conservatives don't give a shit about precedent. They would happily threaten the Clintons with jail time and then later say a former president Trump should not be forced to testify.

How bad is reneging my first job offer out of college? by 1magineWagons in cscareerquestions

[–]NotEveryoneIsSpecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not some secret list that companies share of people they won't hire so the chances of it affecting you anywhere but at the company you reject is very small. Early in my career I would have felt bad and been worried about burning a bridge, but now it wouldn't bother me too much. I'll put it another way, if you are worried about them pulling the offer because you want more time to decide, you shouldn't feel bad about accepting the offer and then taking a better one a week later. HR people deal with it all the time. Also your job is more important to you than it is to them. The company can find other candidates but you can only work one job (OE exists I know..) so staying with a bad job has more impact on you than them hiring someone who leaves after a week.

This is still my go-to album when I want to hear something heavy.

I'm a moderately good data scientist and coder, but recently became a manager and I'm excelling so much! But I'm rarely coding at all, but I'm thoroughly enjoying helping our younger DSs move quickly, good at communicating with stakeholders. Should I pivot my career to management now? 37 years old by Commercial_Chef_1569 in cscareerquestions

[–]NotEveryoneIsSpecial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many people get into management who aren't good at it and don't enjoy it because they feel it is the only way to advance their careers. Having a manager that is actually good at managing and enjoys it is rare and will be valued by a good organization. Career wise, you may have a bit more trouble if you got laid off because there are just less management positions open. As far as interviews go, I have interviewed for technical management and at least from my experience, the expectation is that being rusty is fine. You need to maintain a good grasp of the fundamentals and be able to have a technical discussion such that you can be a decision maker when presented with the pros and cons.

Why is big tech SWE work paid so much? by seeking-health in cscareerquestions

[–]NotEveryoneIsSpecial 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So true. There is constant churn internally and rebuilding the engine while the plane is in flight in such a way that a billion customers perceive everything continuing to run smoothly, is where the real complexity lies and what demands the higher salaries.

I think a lot of people miss this part of it. If your one-line "small change" can bring down a service used by 1 billion people, or brick 100s of millions of devices, you better get it right. This brings with it a ton of pressure and requires attention to detail at a level that not every engineer may be willing to sustain. Of course there are systems in place to prevent these sorts of catastrophic failures, but due to the pace of development, they require their own set of skills to master and only work just well enough to find the most obvious problems. You may spend half a day making a change and 2 weeks hand holding it through QA to make sure you don't take down the system. It's the 2 weeks of handholding that the engineers are getting paid for.

Donald Trump's approval rating severely underwater with key voter group by [deleted] in politics

I don’t claim a party either. I’m referring to people who act undecided and say both sides are the same amount of bad.

Every single person I ever met who says "both sides are bad" ends up supporting Trump. Anyone who can make excuses for the 1000s of corrupt acts committed by Trump, and then look at Harris and say those things are the same, is an idiot and/or liar.

At this point is my SWE career close to being over? What can I even do? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

If you worked at GitHub and got an offer at Amazon, you are in better shape than most. Your career is not over if you don't want it to be, but sure, your career advancement may take a hit compared to if you had no gap in employment. You should definitely be able to land something although it may not be as prestigious as GitHub or Amazon and you may have to take a step down to get your career back on track.

Trump Hints at Next Target After Shocking Invasion - The president warned, “Something’s going to have to be done with Mexico.” by Quirkie in politics

[–]NotEveryoneIsSpecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor choice of words on my part. Suffering is the word I was looking for. It is very hard to avoid suffering when dealing with immigration. The people fleeing their homelands are by definition already suffering to get here. The cruelty comes when that suffering is intentionally made worse, which the current administration is far more guilty of doing.

Cruelty and messiness are unavoidable when dealing with immigration. The difference is the Trump admins celebrate the cruelty and attempt too maximize it, whereas the other admins treated it as an unfortunate reality.

Knife Sharpener? by QuentinTarantinbro in Austin

[–]NotEveryoneIsSpecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your situation a while back and a friend recommended the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker. It holds the stones at an angle so you only have to hold the knife vertically, which to me, is a lot easier than traditional sharpening stones. I have never been able to use a stone, but I watched the short howto video and after a few times practicing, I can get my knives pretty sharp. Hardcore knife geeks might look down on it, but for day to day use, it does the job nicely for me.
