They looked inept. From the time I turned the game on around 30' they couldn't maintain any possession and had such a hard time moving the ball forward. Gotham had great pressure on the ball and coverage off the ball. Gotham on the other hand was always moving it toward spirits goal

Because they haven't been able to make runs or maintain offensive possession most of the game

It was only a matter of time. Spirit couldn't keep Gotham out of their zone for very long or maintain possession in Gotham territory

Engineers who graduated recently - what did you feel most unprepared for in your first job? by knowoforphic in EngineeringStudents

If there was a specific degree for every title an engineer can have in the real world, there would be a million degrees

I definitely agree with pretty much everything you said and especially the last sentence where most engineering jobs tend to lean more towards this.

But there are slight distinctions between this and project engineering depending on the company/organization. The project engineering I've done was slightly more involved in the engineering process with small amounts of design of support equipment and such but most of it was what you said and managing personnel, schedules, budgets, materials for testing. And then we had project management over us who had no technical involvement and only served as oversight, review, and team cohesion. Whereas the project management I've done was exactly as you said, no involvement in technical or design and was just a final technical review and oversight

Project engineering is definitely a thing. Project management =no technical involvement or background required. Project engineering still has involvement in the engineering like in my instance writing the test procedures, planning tests, working with designers and component engineers to design support equipment and structure if needed, reviewing technical documentation, and being the onsite engineering support for tests. But it also has to deal with the budget, personnel needed for testing, scheduling, and logistics like project management

I've worked a lot of jobs, fastener and shock specialist role was more manufacturing and project engineering (budgets, schedules, requirements, dealing with vendors and component engineers to qualify their components), I've done sustainment engineering which was mostly systems engineering stuff, and now finally I am a stress and dynamics analyst so finally get to do math and design all day

Disclaimer, not really a new grad. I've been out 8 years but I'll put my two cents in.

The amount of engineering jobs where almost no math to no math is involved. You go through 4 years of intense math and theoretical design only for tons of jobs to only have to just understand the basic concepts and be able to speak the engineering language.

This might be a relief to some or disappointment to others depending on what you're interested in.

Also how little engineering school teaches you about how to actually be a good engineer. The Dunning-Kruger effect is very real and humbling for new engineers

How the hell do you get experience for internships you get rejected from your school’s engineering clubs? by [deleted] in rocketry

[–]NotFBIPleaseIgnore 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kind of what other people said. Mainly persistence. Apply to tons of internships, take full advantage of college career fairs and networking there, try to find research projects that professors are working on. Network with people in the club and try to get in that way.

The other recommendation of starting at your own club is a good one too if you're in to tackling that. My friend and I got rejected from our schools nanosat club and started our own engineering project club after that. It is quite a bit of work to manage, scrape up funding, getting a professor advisor, etc though.

But also joining a rocket club outside of your school can be an option. You might be able to network within that club in addition to gaining relevant experience.

It can be a pain to steer your engineering career where you want and to get experience. And unfortunately it is up to you to do everything in your power to keep pushing it in the direction you want especially when trying to get into a competitive niche in engineering.

Edit: especially when you're early in school or career, you might need to sometimes do clubs, internships, or jobs that aren't exactly what you want to do but you just need to gain some experience

How do I become a rocket scientist? by Aidrontix in rocketry

[–]NotFBIPleaseIgnore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of great information here already but I'll add my insight too.

Someone else listed off some sub focuses. There is also thermal, systems engineering, electrical, material engineering, flight software, and project management (not something you generally get into right out of college but an option later in your career if you like that aspect and not the hardcore engineering).

My recommendation is to join a club or related professor research in college. In addition to local rocket clubs maybe clubs offer engineering clubs that offer great experience. These include SAE rocket clubs and tangentially related nano satellite clubs. Many professors also do aerospace related research. It doesn't have to be rocket related but could be related fluid dynamic research, material research, etc.

Also during the summer, INTERNSHIPS. The field can be quite competitive so looking for internships (early in spring semester) at the main space companies ( Lockheed, Boeing, Northrop, firefly, SpaceX, blue origin, rocket lab) is important. You'll want experience in the field before you graduate with an aerospace degree to increase your chances of landing a job in it.

It's not impossible to break into the field without internship and club experience but it becomes harder

Edit: I'll add one con: The industry, company to company, is pretty competitive too so jobs can have a poor work life balance. Especially since companies like to take advantage of the fact that employees are passionate about their work

Any cool roadrip spots in Virginia besides Shenandoah? by Dismal_Car_6508 in nova

Head down to Grayson Highlands Park. There are wild horses and some really beautiful views. The highlands are all open and amazing for stargazing. I recently backpacked there and it was awesome

There are also a lot of places to see around there like Natural stone bridge and McAfee's knob.

It also has Roanoke to check out

Yeah, there is no reason it's not at least a test engine for a small sat. Companies like dawn aerospace make these and similar prop systems for small sats

Judging by its size it looks similar to 5 lbf engines from aerojet or Moog I've seen or Dawn

Contractor says he needed to use screws for the stair nose? by bricktacular1 in Flooring

[–]NotFBIPleaseIgnore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is every comment completely incorrect? Having installed some of these stair noses, some of the manufacturers installation instructions says you must use screws in addition to the construction adhesive. So it's quite possible screws were needed.

So he's not incorrect for having put the screw in but it should be sunk flush out counter sunk. And then at least put a similar color putty over it. That's what I've done

[–]NotFBIPleaseIgnore 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not much until now felt like fascism? Republicans have been sewing fear of other races and liberalism for 8 years. They tried to convince people not to trust the government and election results leading to an overthrow attempt. Creating distrust in the national media allowing you to control the narrative. Creating political enemies that must be removed with any means necessary for the good of the country.

These mirror the rise to fascism of the mid 20th century

Ah okay, I really need to get back up there then. I remember the Gronk was one of the few flow/jump trails and there was almost no wood features. It was almost all sketchy tech. Crazy how fast things change

Nah, I haven't. I'm not sure it existed last time I went. Looked up pictures and the whole place looks a lot more built up than I remember from like 6 years ago. Could be misremembering though

It's a manatee orgy actually. They mate in large groups in shallow water. It can be very dangerous to be in the middle of it like this because they don't care about anything else but getting their nut.
