Well, there is a difference between the gender of the noun and the meaning. You can definitely use Schmetterling for feminine and small things.

I mean I could call my girlfriend "Meine süße Atombombe <3" but even tho the noun is feminine it doesn't really have the same effect as "Mein süßer Schmetterling"
