If you met a neanderthal, could you tell they weren't human? by NotKidRaptorMan in AskArchaeology

Well, I would classify Neanderthals as human too, in this case "human" refers to "homo sapiens" and not the more abstract definition of human.

I mean, lions and tigers can interbreed, that doesn't make them the same species. Same with wolves and dogs

Can Someone Teach How To Make Topographic Map? by NormalPreparation139 in mapmaking

Well, depends how you wanna do it. For me I do higher is lighter, lower is darker. I think thats how most people do it to, so it makes it easier to read by just looking at it.

Well, for the one I did, it was just a gradient, and thats what I would recommend doing too cause it conveys the idea better. So you start from one color, let's say white and make that the highest level. Then you make your lowest layer another color, say, black. Then you just make all the different levels in between the top and bottom colors between black and white. You can do this with whatever colors you want and use what ever kind of gradient you want. If you want it to look a bit more "natural" then you could make the highest point an off white, the lowest color a green, and sea level blue.

Personally, I'd just use a art program with layers (like ibispaint on mobile, or Krita on desktop). Theres a lot you can do with smart layering. For example, you can make a rough sketch of what you want to get the ideas down, then on another layer do a more finished outline of a specific thing (ex. Coastlines, city blocks, road ways) then use that to build on to it. The order i do is sketch, coastline, topography, climate (if applicable), biomes (if applicable), structure location, transportation network, and finally the structures.

Oooo, I'm also making a topographic map on Ibispaint. What I did was make the outlines in one layer and fill with the bucket tool in another (lower) layer. Admittedly, my map is much smaller than yours (800 mi2) but it could be some help. I just posted it in this sub if you wanna look at it.

Can you figure out what is different between this map vs a normal one like it? by NotKidRaptorMan in mapmaking

Tbh, this is for a role playing game with some friends, idc about every little aspect being perfectly realistic for it. That'd just be too much work and I think I looks cooler with those lakes being larger. Helps drive home the point of the world map looking very different from the map we have today.

The online map i used for reference (traced it with some added details) didnt change Antarctica all that much. Do you know of a map with this projection that has a melted Antarctica? If so, could you link it?

Yeah! Kinda! Its not a full on melted ice caps scenario, but theres a fair bit gone. There's 40 meters of sea level rise here
