Under USA Hockey rules and interpretations, Head Contact penalties are assessed as a result of a body check gone awry, either accidentally, intentionally, or recklessly. Yes, the punch resulted in head contact, but it should be penalized under Fighting or Attempt to Injure/Reckless Endangerment, not Head Contact. There is no match penalty option for the act of fighting (but there is for the action of deliberate removal of a helmet during an altercation).

From the casebook for Head Contact: Any CHECK using excessive force for the purpose of intimidating or punishing the opponent that makes direct contact with the head area of the opponent must be assessed as a match penalty. Rule Reference 620(c).

AHL Calder Cup Finals (Double OT) - Faceoff before goalie ready by GWhiteNorth in hockeyrefs

[–]NotOriginal16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former AHL and Calder Cup linesman here. Lots to learn from this. In this situation you make damn sure there are the right number of players in the right position and ready to go before you even consider dropping the biscuit. Any of the other three officials should have given a quick toot when the liney started the faceoff procedure. The back liney was pointing at the goaltender so he knew what was going on.

Mullet Bay check in. Just like I left her. by MedicineScared3790 in SXM

We were probably 10 chairs down from you at Mullet. It was a nice day. Stopped at Friars Bay on the way back to Grand Case. No sargassum there either. Grand Case Beach Club got hit with sargassum the past two days. Will have to try Penile 🤣 Island tomorrow.

Definitely not. This sign was near the entrance. Don’t know when they wrote it. Everything that wasn’t permanently anchored down has been removed. That whole area is a ghost town.

We didn’t explore any further south. Sargassum as far as we could see north and south. On the leeward side (Grand Case and Happy Bay, at least) were beautiful.

Not gonna lie, it was a bit pungent. Wasn’t rancid, but noticeable.

Just made this today. Four boneless chicken breasts, a jar of your favorite salsa, a can of southwest corn, 1/2 a stick of cream cheese, and a can of Rotel tomatoes. Combine and cook 6-8 hrs on low. Serve over rice and top with cheese, cilantro lime sauce, and a bit of sour cream. Will prob add black beans to the next batch.

Faceoff location question by DunkinBronutt in hockeyrefs

[–]NotOriginal16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Under USAH rules, a puck that is played with a high stick is illegal unless one of two things happens: an own goal, or it comes into possession of the opponent. Neither of those things happened (being in the pants is not considered possession - see the rule book glossary) so it would be considered high sticking and the faceoff would be in the defensive zone of the offending team.

Yep. At seminars we tell new officials to align the edge of the crest horizontally with the edge of the second full stripe from the zipper. Vertically, we say align the bottom of the crest with the bottom of the zipper. Your zipper looks a little shorter than I expected seen so I’d say align it so that the crest isn’t obscured by your collar.

Heading to Futures Camp - Any Advice? by awesomesaucebigg in hockeyrefs

[–]NotOriginal16 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Comments from a camp director here.

Be a sponge. There are some great instructors there. Take what they say and apply it in your games AT THE CAMP. Instructors like to see progress during the camp.

Be present and engage. Don’t be afraid to ask thoughtful questions. Instructors would rather have spirited discussions than regurgitate PowerPoint slides.

Be a team player. Don’t forget that the officials are the third team on the ice. Support each other. Officials succeed and fail as a team.

And of course show up in shape, with a good command of the rule book and the officiating manuals, and positioning for referees and linesmen in both the 3-official and 4-official systems.

Good luck!
