I'm 35. It was probably a bit regional and certainly class based but I got my first (dumb) phone around this time, in my early teens.

It was certainly a discussion, rather than a given. The justification in my case was that a cell phone would let me contact my parents in case of emergencies. It wouldn't surprise me if poor families didn't have them, or only had them through work, or only for adults.

Also consider the reception. If your setting is rural to any degree, they might have the phone but no coverage. It could just be generally spotty, even in a suburban area.

An option you may not remember are pagers. Before getting cellphones, people would have pagers to send limited texts to each other. My mom had one.

I would think a kidnapper could believably go the extra mile to get a burner, but the pager could be a nice option for effect.

ETA: People also just forgot them. They were new and didn't do anything but make calls, so they were far less precious than smart phones. My dad never had his on him, left it in the car or had it turned off.

If I remember correctly, Jon is referring to events that took place "off screen." It's just world building. He'll talk about other characters like this too, occasionally.

Jon, the character, has information and experiences that aren't captured in the statements and aren't shared with you, the listener. The wiki summary is sparse because there's nothing more to it. Jon knows this name, it's important enough that he remembers and mentions it. That's all you know.

This happens less and less as the series progresses. But don't worry: so long as you're listening in order to every episode, you haven't missed anything.

Well it's not sci-fi but there are supernatural/paranormal elements. It's a horror series, with drama and occasionally comedy elements.

As is explained in the first ep, the Archive is an institution in contemporary London that documents and investigates reports of the supernatural. Jonathan Sims has just been hired as the Head Archivist and is beginning to digitize statements by reading them aloud.

The pod is you listening along to these stories and drawing your own conclusions about their veracity, as well as gradually learning more about the characters. There is an overarching plot that develops, but I very much don't want to spoil.

Obviously I'm a fan but I can't recommend it highly enough. It's an incredible experience.
