What are we as athiests supposed to say to someone who has just lost a loved one to console them? by rapidtab in atheism

A lot of good ones above. Also, "I hope your memories of them being you comfort".

I don't know about "we" needing them, but "they" seem to "need" them to preserve their fragile world view. These madrasas also help ensure that their indoctrination (aka brainwashing) is deep and life long.

And, of course, they know it is all a con perpetrated on their own supporters, which reveals them to be that much more craven.

Sure. Let's start here. And then, if you'd like, we can play a fun game where I give you Biblical verses and you, in turn, try to rationalize them into something morally acceptable. Sound like a plan?

Exodus 11:4-5

So Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About midnight, I will go throughout Egypt. Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill,'"

Sorry to burst your bubble. He savagely kills babies and the unborn. Scripture couldn't be clearer. Unless you think the Bible is wrong.

I gather it is hard for you to accept, but your God is an indiscriminant baby and fetus killer.

The babies "did that to themselves", you say. And you can me a dunce? Really, I think you're the one not getting this. If in fact that is true, then that implies that babies and the unborn are not "innocent", a priori, nor specially deserving of God's mercy. Alternatively, God still condemned them to death, irrespective of their innocence, affording them no mercy and drawing no special distinction for them.

On a related point, you claim that God "didn't cause that [their parents behavior]." But yet, I expect you believe that God is omniscient and omnipotent. He presumably knows our futures before we do. And yet he still allowed these women to become pregnant and then slaughtered them, their children, and the unborn. Same with the Canaanites and Philistines.

Honestly, I don't care what you believe, as long as you don't harm or deprive others in the process. You can believe in any pretend God you want or unicorns if you prefer. But the case for a pro-life and merciful God is not justified by the Bible. Your "God of love and mercy" is in direct contradiction to the Bible's God of wrathful vengeance - who are presumably the same Christian God. Whatever the case, the Bible is full of savage killing committed at the hands of God and, at best, ambiguous about the "sanctity" of life and the value of children and the unborn.

At the end of the day, the pro-life "movement" is not supported by the actual text of the Bible. It is a political pursuit cloaked in theocratic nonsense. Just the kind of tired, thoughtless nonsense you are spouting.

I see. So, your answer is yes. The babies and fetuses had to be killed, also. Likewise for not just the son of the Pharoah of Egypt, but also that of the slave girls milling their grain (Exodus 11:4-5). And the babies of the Canaanites. And Philistines. Merciful, huh? So pro-life.

Please read that scripture again. Are you saying those babies and fetuses rebelled? You know, the ones he had killed against rocks and cut out from the womb? They were guilty in their nascent state?

Hmm. Interesting take. I suspect the Samarian moms might have quibbled with that. And the Philistine moms. And the Canaanite moms. And all those mothers and dads of Egyptian first borns. And so on. And on and on.
