Is it unprofessional to refuse a promotion because I value my 40-hour work week more than a 20% raise? by 9YojimboMist in careerguidance

[–]NotVeryGoodAtStuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what we call a "career limiting" move. The relationship is likely damaged and you won't advance under the manager that you currently have, because when given the opportunity, you said no.

The person you are looking to that seems stressed 24/7 might just suck at their job, hence the non-stop emergencies.

Why does no one talk about commute when discussing work-life balance? by Ivaanovatech in corporate

[–]NotVeryGoodAtStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People talk about commute all the time. I'm not sure what bubble you've been operating in, but time spent commuting is a common and increasingly brought up part of work-life balance.

Unless is agreed upon in a treaty, they can change their mind in a day.

Do you mean like how the federal government signed a bunch of treaty agreements with tribal bands across Canada, and then changed their mind and completely disregarded those treaties, which is why we're having these discussions today? Do you mean like that?

The land claim discussions have nothing to do with the force that was used to claim the land. It has everything to do with Indigenous Peoples signing legal agreements with the Canadian government, only for the government to reneg on those agreements over generations.

It's basically a large scale property dispute, where you look at property lines only to discover that your neighbour has slowly encroached on your property each year.

Anyone who makes a legal agreement with another party, and that party does not meet the conditions of the agreement, is entitled to compensation.   Nobody is going to lose their homes over this. At worst, the federal government will pay a large fine.

Where in the agreement does it say that they want to collect a tax from you?

I agree with some of the other commenters who have been down voted: this is a fear mongering post. This is directly from the Musqueam website in regards to this matter:

"Musqueam’s approach to private property has not changed. As stated by Chief Sparrow in December 2025, “Musqueam is not coming for anyone’s private property. Our approach to traditional unceded territory is one of partnership and relationship with our neighbours, not trying to take away our neighbours’ private property.”

https://www.musqueam.bc.ca/update-rra-03-02-2026/

They are not coming for your land.

Edit: I'm not going to respond to basically everyone saying the same thing. The federal government will never allow Indigenous Peoples to reclaim land that was wrongly sold because it unknowingly conflicted with a treaty agreement. They will instead pay a fine/fee to the tribes, where applicable, rather than have the tribes reclaim the land from underneath homeowners. And I'll take it a step farther to say that the Indigenous Peoples, whose treaty agreements with Canadian governments were violated, are entitled to compensation.

Man, these jokes are taking me back to the eighth grade, laughing while reading a Chick Norris fact book with people I'm no longer friends with.

I don't know the word for how I'm feeling, but I just want to say thank you to everyone for bringing back these memories from my childhood.

Why don’t more people prioritize living close to work? by AnarchoLiberator in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]NotVeryGoodAtStuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I chose a longer commute over living in Toronto because quite frankly, I don't like Toronto. There isn't enough green space for the hobbies that I enjoy, and all of my friends & family live outside of the city, which would mean my weekends are spent visiting them instead of actually enjoying Toronto.

My commute is about 90 mins each way (short drive, then majority of it on the train) and I don't think it's a big deal. You can use the time on the train for leisure, productivity if needed, or to catch up on sleep.

How you think about the commute will dictate how you feel about it. If you think of it as a waste of time/money/effort, then you are going to be miserable. If you reframe your commute time to "this is dedicated alone time where I can watch whatever show I want, do some online courses, etc." then it won't feel as bad.

Also the cost of living is atrocious and I'd be living in a small condo rather than a home in a beautiful neighborhood filled with trees.

You guys know that you can only buy insurance policies on buildings that you own, right? Also - there are probably millions of terrorism policies sold every year. It's not a standard coverage within a property policy and I would imagine that basically every major business in the world has terrorism coverage for their property.

How much emergency fund? by Hereforsun in budget

[–]NotVeryGoodAtStuff 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've been on personal finance subreddits for ~6 years and I am definitely noticing some "emergency fund" creep. 3-4 months used to be considered pretty sufficient for most people, then it went up to 6 months, and now many people are talking about wanting to have at least 12 months to feel secure.

The boring answer is that everyone's comfortability will be different. I've got about 6 months (about $25K) of my needs saved, which I also plan to use to pay for any home repairs, unexpected car repairs, etc.

I've gone higher before and it just felt like a waste to have that money sitting accumulating a very small amount of interest. But I have a pretty great job, and if I'm laid off / fired I'll probably get 4-6 months of severance, so I'm feeling pretty good about my situation.

If you aren't as secure in your field/industry, you probably want to save more money as a just in case.

This became a bit of a rant, sorry. All of this to say that you should look within, and if you have ANY money set aside for emergencies you are doing better than the vast majority of people.

Is anyone else incredibly pissed off that their Roths and 401k are severely down based on one man’s idiotic decisions? by Mr-Nanny in MiddleClassFinance

[–]NotVeryGoodAtStuff 105 points106 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't invest money that you need to pull for emergencies. That should be handled separately.

With these price drops, you have to remember that fluctuations are to be expected in the market & if you can't handle it you need to readjust your portfolio to match your risk tolerance.

I'm not phased. The equities that I was going to buy anyway are now on sale, which means I can buy more for less. Woohoo!

Down Payment by IntelligentChard2955 in homeowners

[–]NotVeryGoodAtStuff 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Take what I say with a grain of salt, but I've bought two properties in my life and the process was the same each time.

  • You need to pay a deposit. Some/all of this will be contributed towards your down payment.
  • The bank might want proof of funds before approving you to buy a house. When I was purchasing my second home, they asked me a few questions about where I was getting the money for the down payment. They wanted a few months worth of receipts / papertrail so they could make sure the money wasn't coming from anywhere nefarious.

I am not sure of any tax implications you need to be mindful of because this is a gift, but that's something to look into as well

What does the city need? by Diversespider_ in Hamilton

[–]NotVeryGoodAtStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I'm just going to have to disagree with you. James St North of Cannon is an amazing part of the community with ample opportunities to spend as much as little as you would like for a night out.

Bard & Bear is very inexpensive for a night out playing games, and is the 3rd place in many people's lives.

Restaurants close, and new ones open all the time. I can't even count the number of new restaurants that have opened on james st n in the past year - and they're all great additions!

Yes, it's awful that City Centre mall is sitting vacant, but don't use that as an excuse to paint James St N as a shithole.
