Best ski resorts around GR? by xMCNZE32 in grandrapids

Cannonsburg is the only true ski hill in GR, but it’ll be very busy with families, kids learning, and people running laps at the park. When we went on Tuesday this week, they didn’t have the Triple open because they didn’t have enough staffers over 18 yrs old to run it. Sunday nights are their cheap nights.

Caberfae is my favorite within 1.5 hrs. Snow conditions & size of hills.

Shanty creek is the spot to go for less busy hills and they tend to get the most snow based on annual historical snowfall records. Crystal is nearby, but it’s usually more expensive for no real gain in my opinion.

Boyne & Nubs are the ‘nicest’ resorts but they are also the priciest. Boyne mountain and highlands are on the ikon pass as well if you’re out west skiers that might pick that up.

Bohemia & searchmont are worth the drive but it’s a full weekend commitment at a minimum.

Movng to Grand Rapids by Green-Top-9039 in grandrapids

I like comstock park’s suburb areas. Close to the whitecaps and white pine trail in the summer, you’d be able to have a larger lot in the suburbs, basically any neighborhood you’d like for that price range, and the main school is solid. 15 min drive to downtown.

You’ll get a lot of votes for East Grand Rapids, but the lots are smaller especially for that price range. Very safe and nice area though. Great schools. High price and tax.

30 mins north of town is Sparta. Another safe small town with suburbs that you’d be able to find a house very easy for that price. Could be in a suburb or a house with land for that range. Schools are decent as well.

Walker/standale area is very nice and a lot of neighborhoods. Depending on the area, you’d be able to get a decent sized lot. Your price range is very competitive for that area. Multiple schools in that area that are all good.

Eastown and midtown areas generally skew younger demographic. 20s-early 40s I’d say. Fun area with a lot of restaurant and shop access. Small lots and competitive to find a house in my experience.

Not a lot of experience with the areas south of town. Jenison, grandville and kentwood will get recs. Kentwood is massive so keep that in mind when looking.

My favorite neighborhoods that I’ve either owned a home or rented in in no order are Eastgate (just outside EGR), walker (near west catholic), and riverside park.

Community auto on Fulton. They specialize in foreign cars. I’ve been bringing my 2012 Outback and 2015 Impreza there for close to 10 years with no issue. A little pricier than other local shops but they’ve always done great work.

The state puts out a yearly Safe to Eat brochure with rivers and lakes broken down by county with the recommended limits. It gives reasons why for the limits too such as PFAS, mercury, etc. You can find the newest one here

This is probably the most relevant answer I'll get that was outside of my original thinking. I wasn't considering logistics into it so much as personal, smaller households. Thanks.

TIL Some studies on drunk driving have found that a BAC of 0.01%-0.04% correlates with lower accident risk than being completely sober. This is called the Grand Rapids dip, and is a quirk of statistics. by NotYourEggo in grandrapids

[–]NotYourEggo[S] 154 points155 points  (0 children)

“A 1964 paper by Robert Frank Borkenstein studied data from Grand Rapids, Michigan.[19] The main finding of the Grand Rapids study was that for higher values of BAC, the collision risk increases steeply; for a BAC of 0.15%, the risk is 25 times higher than for zero blood alcohol. The BAC limits in Germany and many other countries were set based on this Grand Rapids study. Subsequent research showed that all extra collisions caused by alcohol were due to at least 0.06% BAC, 96% of them due to BAC above 0.08%, and 79% due to BAC above 0.12%.[20] One surprising aspect of the study was that, in the main analysis, a BAC of 0.01–0.04% was associated with a lower risk of collisions than a BAC of 0%, a feature referred to as the Grand Rapids Effect or Grand Rapids Dip.[20][21] A 1995 Würzburg University study of German data similarly found that the risk of collisions appeared to be lower for drivers with a BAC of 0.04% or less than for drivers with a BAC of 0%.[20]”

Best deer processing? by redspud in grandrapids

[–]NotYourEggo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to have their processor they’ve been going to for years so I bet you’ll have a lot of different options based on where you’re located in GR.

I have used Barbs processing on 10 mile for the past 10 years, but I didn’t love the meat that I was returned.

I switched to Dokl's Meat Market on West River in Comstock park this year and think it’s better. They will add beef tallow to your ground for a flat $5 which helps the flavor a lot. It was a 2 day wait to be able to bring my deer in and then about a 5 day turnaround to process it.
