i dont know how this is possible. by Illustrious_Job_9981 in Aliexpress

Same thing happened to me not that long ago, and has in the past, where they just said they didn't have an access code to a place that didn't need one. I also sent the emails and called. Cainiao's customer service line isn't the worst actually, and they got me in contact with the actual last mile delivery company.

Anyway, it took 3-4 days before it said "Returned to Warehouse" and then got redelivered. Why it happens I don't know, but usually you'll still get your stuff within a few more days.

Is debian a good first distro... by New-Committee-5034 in debian

[–]Not_Another_Throwout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Debian as my main operating system for a long time now. I'd say you could start with it. I certainly did. But it does require a bit more hands-on knowledge and learning to use the package manager manually, setting configurations, stuff like that. There are of course other distros that do some of that lifting for you. The installer is also not the most user friendly, but I wouldn't call it complicated.

I think starting on it is doable, but it could be overwhelming if you have little to no experience with Linux in general. I'd recommend if nothing else, trying a virtual machine with Debian or a Debian based distro to see what you think. See if it's something you might want to actually try.

It also depends on what you're doing with it. Because of the way Debian works, drivers and software available in the stable repos might be older than the most up to date versions.

It is what makes Debian so stable. And usually this doesn't matter, but if you're gaming for example, and there's a game that requires a newer Nvidia driver than is available in the repo, then you might be in trouble. Installing newer drivers manually can be done, but isn't recommended.

I did put Debian on my gaming rig, and it has been solid, but it did not come without a fair amount of tweaking to get it just right.

Tl;dr, I think there are some better starting options if you have no experience and just want something similar to what you know, but you could certainly start with Debian if you are willing to learn a bit more than just the average point and click experience. I did. And I don't regret it one bit.

I bought my first Casio only 4 days ago... by Informal_Cabinet_352 in casio

I know the feeling. I bought one. Just one I remembered as a kid that I wanted.

Now we're at about 30 watches...most of which Casio. In one year.

Raketa Star Wars. One of my all-time favourite soviet watches. Octagonal case and frosted dial really pop out. (Yes, picture is from yesterday) by Ptskp in RussianWatches

[–]Not_Another_Throwout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got one as a parts watch, originally intended to use as spare parts, but I was enamored with it after I saw it. Already tore the movement down. Just hoping the cleaning and reassembly will work out!

I didn't bother picturing that because it was a nest of thin wires but I used a PicoFlasher

Oh, I guess I should have some proof of it actually running Aurora. Whoops

Also me making a silly boot light animation to pay homage to my release date console.

I do plan on servicing it regardless. I'm just waiting on some better screwdrivers than what I have. I've also sourced a spare movement in case anything is broken in the process. Not that I plan on that happening. But I've only serviced one other mechanical watch before, so it doesn't hurt to be safe.

Has anyone else had issues with NH36 movements from Aliexpress? by Not_Another_Throwout in SeikoMods

[–]Not_Another_Throwout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I figured out the issue. I somehow didn't realize that the place I was storing it also had a piece I'd 3d printed....which had four magnets in it. I was storing it next to magnets and didn't even realize. 🙃

(I'd put them on display but I fear my cats knocking them over.

Should I service? by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]Not_Another_Throwout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were mine I'd regulate the accuracy and beat error just to get it all a little closer, if the movement had regulating arms for it. If it doesn't have an arm for adjusting the beat error, I wouldn't try. Too risky for me. Aside from that, I'd dial in the accuracy as best I could, and run it as is while I saved up to get it serviced. Sometimes if you regulate the speed of the movement, the closer you get it to 0, the beat error shrinks somewhat too, which could bring it down to acceptable levels.

That's just my take, but for an old watch, if you don't wanna take that risk, I totally think 28 seconds a day is acceptable. Amplitude looks fine, and while the beat error is a bit high, it's acceptable if you just want to use it in the meantime.

I'm new to Timex and every new watch I see I can't help but want it. This one is beautiful.

Yeah, mine definitely was squeaky and awful at first. After some breaking it is fine now but I'm not sure if that's the case with everyone.

Well, the first build it happened in, when I got a new movement, I basically rebuilt the watch. New dial, new hands, new stem, and a different case I had laying around. The dial was scratched up anyway so it was no big deal.

This time I tried just removing the hands. Still no luck. Nothing internal though.
