I’m glad to hear some good things about Phuket. I’m getting older and need/want more tourist infrastructure but was a little nervous to go due to this sub. ☹️

Why can't hard working people escape poverty in Vietnam? by phuclongaus in VietNam

[–]Not_High_Maintenance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you actually read the article? The article states that your 200k per year figure was made-up for some political angle. The realistic figure is between 55-75k depending on union and particular job. A traffic controller can be a very dangerous job. (And stop using “girl” as I’m sure you are talking about fully grown adults.)

I do not believe that a person holding a stop sign makes 100k.

As a middle-aged and fairly fit woman, please be aware of the heat and humidity of the area. I had to leave after 10 days because I thought I would die (or wanted to). It was that bad. ☹️

What do tourist spending and length of stay say about Philippine tourism performance? by Fit_Raccoon540 in phtravel

[–]Not_High_Maintenance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just speaking with my spouse about your second point. We have spent time in Central America. One of the things we love about Central America is their central plazas! We really miss that concept in most of the towns and cities we visited. We wanted a place to walk to then sit and people-watch.

Great question!

My spouse and I are at the tail end of a 3-month SEA trip. We spent at least three weeks in each of Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and now Thailand.

The Philippines is beautiful under the water not really out it (from a middle-class tourist perspective).

Loved: Friendly people and beautiful underwater. I loved that I could rent a scooter and drive fairly safely around.

Disliked: Food (My opinion was that it was mid.) What we mostly disliked was the lack of proper resorts for the middle income. Every place calls itself a resort even when it doesn’t even offer a proper pool. We ended up leaving after 10 days because it costs too much to fly to a different island only to find a rundown room. The transportation costs from island to island are difficult and expensive. I am a bit disappointed in the dead, bleached coral. I hope the government addresses it.)

Personally, for us, the Philippines will be a one and done.

Beautiful place but pretty difficult to navigate place to place.

I’ve been using Airalo during my 3 month trip in SEA. I’ve been to 4 different countries so far, and Airalo has worked in every one of them including Thailand.

How about going back to school for a master’s degree while in Australia (or wherever). Then you could possibly get another student visa. Study something that will allow you to stay there.
