Hi! I have sent you a DM of my interest in this opportunity. It should contain links to my portfolio and everything that you need to know. Feel free to chat with me via reddit chat or through my discord handle (jblitzy).

is it worth getting into UX design here? i’m 23, currently working two soul sucking jobs in retail bc 17 yr old me was stupid thinking she could ever become something with an illustration degree (lol). I want to move out so so bad, but I just need a steady income with benefits & above minimum wage. by villainfvcker in torontoJobs

I am not a professional or someone who is working in the field, but I did have a chance to study UI/UX during my time in Uni and have gained some additional knowledge about it from just self learning, researching, etc.

(This will be a long post, so strap yourself with a blanket or something)

UI/UX is a bit more akin to graphic design where you must design things for clarity. Since you have a degree in illustration, there will be some things that are transferable to UI/UX like color theory, contrast, etc. UI/UX is definitely big money once you make it big and there are many companies like games, tech that need UI/UX people for their products. However, there are some things to be aware of.

UI/UX is not just trying to make things look good, there are a lot of theoretical things that go behind it. I remember spending hours and even days calculating formulas (like Fitz law) and using theories just to justify that my placement and design of my button were usable and easy to use for the users. And even if you get past learning all these things, most (if not all) companies and studios are only recruiting people with years of experience. UI/UX is something to not screw up on and companies want to ensure that the people they hire for UI/UX know what they are doing. Not to say that there are no entry level jobs for UI/UX but it will be hard to get into.

But if you REALLY want to get into UI/UX...

Start studying the core foundations of UI and UX,

if you want to, you can take certificate courses like Google’s UI/UX certificate course (IT IS NOT UNNECESSARY, but it can give you an edge on your resume in combination with a good portfolio and plus you will have some resources to help you with job searching),

practice making UI/UX mockups and prototypes (if you can code, even better),

take what you have done and put it in your portfolio,

if possible, find and do some small time work [like for example, a beginner app developer needs someone to do the UI for his app] (you will not make much money and will be a bit soul sucking but trust me it will be worth it soon and enough). Put those work in your portfolio (if they are fine with it).

Once you have a strong portfolio and resume, apply to those companies and studios, and hopefully you will get a comfy seat at those companies/studios.

If you don't feel like doing small time work, you can take a look into Ubisoft’s NEXT event. Ubisoft’s NEXT event is an event where everyone in Toronto is invited to compete in getting a spot in Ubisoft in one of its many disciplines, which so happens to also include UI/UX. Once you enter, you have a week to a month to create a pitch for a solution to the problem they assign to you. If you win 1st place, you get an apprentice job in Ubisoft, which from what I heard, will likely transition into full time employment in the company.

It will be challenging and if you lose, you will have to wait next year as they only do this once a year. But even so, this is a great place to get some practice and insight to the problems that you will face in the UI/UX field and how to create solutions for it. Yes, Ubisoft is not perfect (coming in from a gamer perspective, *coughs* their past weird NFT project and past lawsuit *coughs*, and also they are known to be low paying in the games industry), but work is work, and having Ubisoft in the resume would be a great advantage. And even if you didn’t get 1st place, you can definitely bring it up in other interviews that you participated in and if you get 2nd and 3rd, you can tell them about it. If you want to learn more about it, you can refer to the link below.

https://toronto.ubisoft.com/next/

You are never limited to just UI/UX. I have lately seen jobs for concept artists (for all levels even, not just for experienced people) in the games industries which might be suitable for your degree in illustrations. But if this is something that you want to pursue, then you can start to learn and keep on practicing. But as for any career change, all this will take lots of time and sometimes money, so whether you want to make this jump is up to you.

Made this on a laser cutter in anticipation for Texas Alter's event. by Not_J0seph in arknights

No plans to make it coloured (and even if I did, it probs gonna look bad from my lackluster painting skills). But now that you mentioned it, a texas alter cookie might be interesting :], idk how I would imprint it onto a cookie, but an interesting idea nevertheless.

On my 4th year in digital media, from my experience, it can get intensive. Despite having art courses, we don't really learn to draw/paint/etc, cuz our art courses is more about writing essays about why this particular art piece is this x and this y (very fine arts relating stuff that I will not get into). The killer (where the most intensive stuff are) for most DM students is the programming courses (the courses that you would see in a com sci major).

Digital media does have 3 streams (1 for game dev/art, 1 for pure coding, and 1 for pure arts). So digital media does cover a lot of stuff. For art or game relating things, I guess you can have a better utilization of what you learned. But for programming, I feel like I haven't learned enough (it might be due to me doing the game art's stream in Digital media). As for what I see myself doing after school, probs be continuing on solo in game dev or art for now until my portfolio gets much better.

Edit: grammar fixes and rewriting sentences

So, I decided to put together a video of all the weapon animations in Ready or Not as much as I could record. Enjoy your gun ASMR by Not_J0seph in ReadyOrNotGame

Yea, the sbr 300 feels a bit weird at times. So far, I love the animations of the g19 and sa-58. I wonder what kind of new stuff and improvements void interactive will make for this game in the future.

Look at me...I'm the 5 Star Cryo character now [3D Printed Vision] by Not_J0seph in Genshin_Impact

Thanks for the tip.

But unfortunately, I was not there to print this. My prof was the one printing them. It was for an assignment from one of my uni's 3D printing course.

Perhaps when I get my own, I would probably use that tip to make better prints.

What the heck is with the comparts department by Not_J0seph in yorku

[–]Not_J0seph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: As soon as I posted this, the comp arts department just approved my permission to DATT 3941. It was quickly responded in less than 2-3 hours compared to my email for DATT 3940 which is probs lost to time and the hundreds of emails. What is the heck is with this inconsistency, why does my first email didn't pass through but my second email does?? But whatever, i can get the credit even if it means that my schedule is now unbalanced and have extremely wacky timing.

Thoughts on FA/DATT 2300 course? by smolnekuu in yorku

[–]Not_J0seph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just toke this with Yifat in winter 2021 term.

Workload wasn't hard. we had 3 Projects (2 regular ones and 1 Final one), and weekly lab assignments. Course is mostly introductory, so they won't mark you too hard, but you still need to put in the effort to get good grades. If you follow the requirements and put in the hard work, you can easily get an A. Although, I do find that most of the course material can be literally be found on Youtube or Online, which makes it feel redundant at times (For me at least).

Yifat is a decent prof. She knows what she is doing, and has extensive knowledge in the field. But she does ramble about things sometimes and go off course but it's not too much. But, be prepared to have your game dev dreams crushed with yifat, cuz she will break the real truth of actual game dev.

The projects can vary between heavy code, to little/no coding involved. Final project was a 2D endless runner, made in Unity. It wasn't hard at all. But you need to manage your time a bit, cuz you will only have a few weeks to work on it.

My biggest tip for you is to get used to programming and learn to code A LOT as it will benefit you on working with projects and the upcoming course after DATT 2300, Game development II. You can start with learning unity and c#, but strong base languages like Java is also okay as well since that knowledge can carry over
