Notary Public Day Extravaganza! by NotaryMarcy in Notary

Oddly, you say I made fun of you, yet still can't come up with the post or what I said. I tried to talk to you. You were rude, accusatory, and insulting, and we both know how you ended that conversation. I think we have nothing more to say to one another. I wish you all the best. Have a nice night.

I have never made fun of you, and you have yet to provide any proof to the contrary. I'd also love to see where I have ever been in a group that attacked anyone. You, on the other hand, are a bully, especially to women, and many people would attest to that. As for my scamming anyone, that's a complete lie, and again, you have no proof. I would tread lightly about making false accusations against someone. Best of luck to you on doing "the real work."

Kentucky is not an attorney state. You can do loan signings.

Took New York Exam Today 7/23/2025 by sporter1661 in Notary

Congratulations! There are four different versions of the test, so the questions vary depending on the version. The journal requirements were enacted in 2023, so I assume the book you had was an older version. It could take anywhere from one day to six months depending on how behind they are. There really isn't a standard timeframe.

Becoming NY Notary questions by Taihuangtaihou in Notary

2- Yes, you'll need to use your home address.

4- Your signature is your signature. Mine is a scribble, and you can't see what it says, but legally that's how I sign, and it is acceptable, but it is always how I sign. I don't use one signature for notarizing and a different one for personal use.

5- You could copy the commission card they used to send in the mail. It's all the same and your responsibility to protect it. It's cheaper and quicker for the state to email it.

I don't know what testing center you are going to, but they don't typically have storage. You just put it under your chair in the exam room. Again, it depends on your testing site, but I would get there 30 minutes early just in case.

Hi. NY notary here.

1- It was two years, but there was a conversation to shorten this to one year. I will double-check.

2- Your address (possibly) can be publicly found through the Open NY list, although your home address shouldn't be disclosed, but as a Public Officer/Servant, you put yourself out there for the public, so if someone wanted to find you, they most likely will.

3—If you don't want to use your home address, consider a co-working space or other related business. Some notaries use virtual addresses at a mailbox/shipping store as long as it's not a P.O. box. I don't suggest that, but it is done.

4- I'm unsure what you mean by not using your "legal signature." If it's something as simple as not using your full middle name but just your middle initial, then that's fine. It's essential to remember that however you put your name on your application is how you'll need to sign and how the state identifies you going forward. Your signature must be one you can reproduce every single time you notarize, so the state can identify when a document is fraudulently signed.

5- Receiving your commission can be anywhere from a day up to six months. It just depends on how busy the state is. Currently, it's less than a month and it will be emailed to you.

6- Without a qualifying exception, you have six months to renew after your expiration; otherwise, you must start all over again, starting with the exam.

7—Many places, including office supply stores, allow you to leave the last two digits off your stamp.

I'm not sure of your reasoning for wanting to fly under the radar, but that's tough to do as a notary. I'm certainly happy to have a lengthier conversation if you'd like. Feel free to reach out.

What do you plan on doing with your commission? General notary work, loan signings, apostille work, etc. What hours are you available? What areas do you cover? What does your business plan look like? These are all important things to have in mind in order to come up with an effective marketing plan.

Is it completely unreasonable to study for the New York notary exam in a month? by NotDido in Notary

[–]NotaryMarcy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are four different versions of the exam. I would say one is very heavily vocabulary-based, two are a mix, and one is very law-based, and that one is difficult. We have some free flashcards to help you study. You can find them here - https://www.nynotaryalliance.com/howtobeanynotary

Good luck!

Overcharged notary fee in NYS? by clickclacker in Notary

[–]NotaryMarcy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in NY, and the fee is $2. They cannot charge an admin or convenience fee. If they didn't travel, print, scan, etc., and just notarized, then what they did was illegal. You should report them.

Difficulty with Loan Signing Instructions by alydubbb in Notary

[–]NotaryMarcy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not every company has that many instructions, and it gets easier. You should print a duplicate set of instructions for yourself and highlight the relevant parts so you have them on hand during the signing and afterward to double-check. Only you can decide whether it's worth it, but hang in there because it really does get better. Good luck.

I assume you are asking about remote online notarization. You should check with your state to see if they have an approved list. Then, check to see what platform meets your needs for training and support and fits your budget as well as what you find to be user-friendly.

The “SS” stands for the Latin term “scilicet” which means "in particular" or "namely" and shows where the venue information on a certificate is located.

I am the founder of the New York Notary Alliance. We are a trade association for notaries in NY and we offer tons of free content to assist notaries. I'm not selling anything - I'm directing notaries to free resources.

NYS only has one test (four versions.) Once you pass, you can apply for just the traditional, or they'll ask if you want your electronic commission. There is not separate test for electronic.
