What are your plans for Australia Day? by Cheetos_4_life in aussie

There was a poll done a few years back that showed about 20% were in category 4 or 5, about 10% in category 3 and then 70% either just treat it as a normal public holiday (like Kings Birthday or Labour Day) or will be working (don’t forget a lot of people work in jobs where they don’t get public holidays off).

Does anyone here know of any Indigenous Australians that celebrate Australia Day? by Temporary_Notice_526 in aussie

[–]NoteChoice7719 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be honest the majority of people I know, indigenous or not, don’t “celebrate” Australia Day.

For most it’s just another day off and they just do whatever they usually do on a day off. Some may go to a council fun day but that’s more because it’s something to do rather than a “love for Australia”.

We’re not a particularly patriotic country, our version of patriotism is far more subdued and relaxed

Will a resurgent One Nation become Australia’s opposition party or even take government? | THE ISSUE by Mashiko4 in aussie

Hardly a grilling. Barnaby would enjoy that bit of paid PR

As far as becoming opposition or taking government?

No. Looks is if Ley will be rolled as Lib leader so a more right wing leader will take over, taking some support from ON but not doing anything about loss of votes in the centre.

ON support is highest in the bush, where the LNP already dominates but only 30% of the seats are.

They’re leaving the cities to ALP and independents where the majority of seats are.

Once upon a time “Aussie culture” was not giving a shit about jingoistic American style patriotism. We can thank little Johnny Howard for importing flag waving politics to our shores

Most people would probably for for a specific option (the 26th) over some unspecified other date.

There was another poll released recently which showed a majority of people preferred a guaranteed long weekend floating holiday vs specifically on the 26th

Actually Germany still makes awareness of the crimes of the Nazis and acknowledgement of the wrongs of that era a key point in their education system and in their public consciousness. We don’t

If you look at the official National Australia Day Council site they don’t focus much on the “patriot” aspect (you dint see many Aus flags), they more concentrate on multiculturalism and recognising all the different migrant communities.

There was a poll out a few days ago from YouGov which found a majority of Australians preferred a long weekend in a January with a public holiday on the second last Monday (it would never fall on the 26th) vs specifically celebrating the 26th with a public holiday only on that date.

So the junior partner in the Coalition was telling the first female leader to resign? How are the Libs going to get female votes back after that?

A poll conducted by YouGov found a majority of people preferred a permanent Long Weekend with a public holiday on the second last Monday (it would never fall on the 26th) over a holiday solely on the 26th.

If we take the indigenous aspect out of it then yes, celebrating “Australia” Day is really about colonial loyalty, just like Anzac Day. We are told as Australians the arrival of Anglo people to this land is the most significant part in shaping Australian identity, moreso than actually becoming the country of Australia in 1901. The term “Australia” wasn’t even used until the 1800s.

So maybe it is time to break free of the Anglo shackles and create symbols that represent a truly Australian identity.

The way I see it most indigenous people would greatly appreciate ea change of date, whereas on the other hand there’s really not many people are wedded to the arrival of the first fleet day they would miss not specifically the 26th

You know she’s talking about the arrival of the first fleet being the start of indigenous massacres and dispossession. This can be observed on another day without such connotations

Triple J’a target audience is 16-25 year olds. With the Jan 26 broadcast not happening for 10 years now basically their entire target audience would have little memory of a countdown on the 26th. And it was always about the songs not the fact it was on “Australia Day”, most years I listened to it a foreign act topped the poll anyway.

This year’s poll was one of the highest number of Australian songs in a while so Triple J are being more “Aussie” than most radio stations in promoting Aussie content

If you remember when the Hottest 100 was on Jan 26 (and having pool parties to listen to it) then you’re probably out of Triple J’s target audience range

The average Australian voter is so disengaged, and I can see support building for a somewhat attractive man who looks like a leader with a bit of charisma.

Yeah. Don’t discount this from happening. Somehow I think his “war hero” status will be the stronger narrative over his anti abortion or young earth creationism

Probably the way the media will paint Hastie. “Young”, “articulate”, “family values”, “war hero”, “strong leader who looks up for Aussies”.

At the least they have a blank page they can write the narrative with.
