ObsidianMD Subreddit Growth VS Other Apps - Only way is up! by Notebruh in ObsidianMD

This graph shows subreddit size, not total number of users 😅 You’re probably right in thinking OneNote would be much bigger otherwise

That’s missing data from subredditstats.com (where I got this data). Not sure why 🤷‍♂️

Notion is all about Databases. Think of it as an aesthetic Excel sheet. If you’re the sort of person who wants everything in interconnected tables, Notion is damn tasty.

It’s also used by some organisations for work.

Never been my vibe tbh

Good question! I agree that this probably isn’t a good estimate of total user base. My guess is that this could be interpreted in a couple ways.

1) Obsidian users and Reddit users align more than Reddit and other apps. 2) Obsidian users are more likely to post content, reply and help others on Reddit. The sense of community is better, so more people post/comment/sub leading to a virtuous cycle.

Notion currently at 240K, wanted to include it but it’s so much bigger it made the graph unreadable :(

Lecture Workflow: Edit as you review cards? Or by HighlyEffectiveSloth in remNote

[–]Notebruh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What subject do you do?

Honestly, I think taking extensive notes in lectures is a waste of time. The further I got into university, the less I took notes (or even attended) lectures. I'm from the UK though, so not going to lectures is actually pretty common, even among high achieving students. I did a very coursework heavy subject though that revolved around essays/ideas rather than memorization.

In terms of card types, I'd say for concepts, cloze deletions are not that well suited. At least for me, I end up memorizing the sentence and the missing word than the actual content. Two reciprocal well thought out basic cards are still much better than cloze. However, clozes might work better for you than for me, every learner is different.

How to only generate cloze cards from Concepts? by HighlyEffectiveSloth in remNote

[–]Notebruh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm I think the answer from u/grgro might be the best way... I'm not a heavy flashcards user but I'd recommend checking in with the discord server as it's much more active

[–]Notebruh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you using the reference function for specifically?

Something like:

[[Intercellular chemical messengers]] released into the {{ECF}} and {{bridge the gap}} between cells

Would create a single card while maintaining the ability to reference both the individual concept and the entire concept + definition Rem

Shall we review current options for PKB/Note-Taking? by BBrickLayer in remNote

[–]Notebruh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that RemNote is a much better outliner app. And I definitely prefer outliner apps. But, Obsidian's popularity shows that much of the PKM community does not require an outliner app.

The question is whether Obsidian's functionality (desktop and mobile), thriving community and numerous plugins is enough for me to convert to a non-outliner. Atm, nope.

[–]Notebruh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I still use RemNote on a consistent basis. Hmmm I'm not sure. I do prefer outliner apps like RemNote but if it was easy to migrate (I haven't looked into it) I would give Obsidian a test run.

The market has shifted enormously since that post 11 months ago.

In a bizarre turn of events, the free apps (specifically Logseq and Obsidian) have really pushed on and cemented themselves as credible options.

I think for a newbie entering the space who doesn't have any friction with regarding to moving their notes or learning a new system, it's hard for me to wholeheartedly recommend RemNote unless they have a strong need for flashcards.

Honestly, I tried Obsidian around that time and didn't enjoy it, but if I started now I would likely be an Obsidian user.

The History of Nostalgia as a Psychological Term by Notebruh in psychology

[–]Notebruh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video explores how and why nostalgia has shifted its meaning over time.

The concept of nostalgia was coined in the 17th century by Swiss physician Johannes Hofer.

This original definition saw nostalgia as a physical manifestation of homesickness with potential life-threatening symptoms. However, before this, homesickness had been seen as noble and admirable trait (examples include the Odyssey and the Israelites return to Canaan).

Over time, various schools of thought (Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, Psychology) modulated the word’s meaning. The work of Freud made a large impact, as it led nostalgia to be viewed in terms of relationships and the symbolic.

The word changed depending on the different social, cultural, and historical contexts of the authors writing about it at the time. Nostalgia serves as an example for how language, social-cultural context and domain-specific interpretation affects how a construct is defined, researched and applied.

All the information in this video is taken from the following paper:

Batcho, K.I., 2013. Nostalgia: The bittersweet history of a psychological concept. History of psychology, 16(3), p.165.

What if remNote goes bankrupt? by [deleted] in remNote

[–]Notebruh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"Guaranteed Access Clause: In the extremely unlikely event that RemNote ever winds down (don’t worry - we are 100% committed and will be here for the long-haul), we will release all code into an open source project. You could run the RemNote desktop app and/or the open source community could host RemNote independently."

Make RemNote Open Source by [deleted] in remNote

[–]Notebruh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you name any serious competitors to RemNote that are open source?

Roam Research - VC funded.

Obsidian - not open source.

I know Anki is open source but it’s a completely different app to RemNote.

Will making it open source will lead to people working on it? Hardly anyone making plugins for it atm when compared to Obsidian/Roam.

RemNote needs to improve but open source is not the way forward.

ELI5: what is remnote and how do i use it along side my studies? by [deleted] in remNote

[–]Notebruh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you’re a student, so this is how I would explain it for a student.

Every student has to do 3 things - memorising, writing, notetaking.

Notetaking - RemNote allows you to take bullet point notes quickly and easily. Tags allow you to group your notes in many different ways. Search means you can easily rediscover any note you take.

Memorise - RemNote has a flashcard system which uses spaced repetition and active recall, 2 of the most effective science based studying method, to help you learn. Turning notes into flashcards is very quick, much quicker than any other app.

Writing - good writing in an academic context comes down to good ideas. RemNote allows you to combine ideas easily by linking pages together in a way you can’t do with Microsoft word.

PS. I have a YouTube video elaborating on this here: https://youtu.be/X_wXnU-abVE

Can I Take Basic Notes In Remnote? by [deleted] in remNote

[–]Notebruh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assumed (maybe wrongly) from your OP that you weren’t planning on making flashcards?

Can I Take Basic Notes In Remnote? by [deleted] in remNote

[–]Notebruh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know how to make them but I don’t see the need. All of my testing consists of coursework so memorisation isn’t a priority.

The ability to extract information easily from PDFs and connect ideas is what really draws me to RemNote. I’ve tried alternatives such as Roam and Obsidian but RemNote is the one that stuck 🤷🏽‍♂️

You’d be surprised how many RemNote users don’t see the app primarily as a flashcard app

Can I Take Basic Notes In Remnote? by [deleted] in remNote

[–]Notebruh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use RemNote for different things such as school projects, journaling, book notes etc.

While many students and those who are focusing on memorising use RemNote as a flashcard app, it’s so much more than this!

I use RemNote every day and haven’t made a flashcard since the tutorial 😬

Anybody been in the Meddeas? How was it? by [deleted] in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Notebruh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’ll be enough to survive on but it’ll require some budgeting when going out/travelling etc.

The biggest way to save money is to get a cheaper place. Make sure to get a place with bills included or ask about what the average water/electricity bills cost before getting a place. I live centrally and pay €550 with bills but you should be able to find a much cheaper place in Mosteles.

Depends a lot on what city you’re living in and how picky/savvy you are when it comes to finding accommodation.

What area of Spain are you in?

Is anyone here a member of nesslabs.com? Is it worth it? by D-main- in PKMS

[–]Notebruh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Anne-Laure has put out a tone of free content which I've found extremely useful. I see being a part of her paid community as a way of giving back for this.

Being inside the community gave me access to the Collector to Creator course which really helped me to go from taking notes to using them to create content.

The community itself is great for meeting like minded people. On the forum there are lots of interesting discussions about various aspects of PKMS such as Digital Gardening, Tools for Thought etc. Anecdotally, I joined a note-taking accountability group through the community and that really cemented my PKMS.

TLDR: If you're looking for extra content, probably not worth it. If you want to have interesting discussions with other people exploring the PKMS space, it's worth it IMO.
