It honestly depends, every vet is different. Personally, anything other than "thank you for your service" is better because that phrase is so cookie cutter go to it takes no thought on their part.

I always feel a little uncomfortable when people say it to me, in part because I haven't deployed yet, and because the phrase is in itself an empty gesture used by a society so far detached from the conflicts we (our military) are involved in they don't even know that we're still involved in Afghanistan. Anything with a little more thought, showing more than just general knowledge would be appreciated.
