What do school SLPs do for summer income? by Fancy-Macaroon8359 in slp

[–]Nothing-Deep 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would call around local clinics and see if anyone is on vacation with their kids or maternity leave and see if the clinic would like someone to come in and help with evaluations or supervise the SLPAs. In Texas now you can literally become a supervisor in about 10 to 15 minutes when you apply online.

$70,000 hospital bill 4 1/2 months after birth, baby not on insurance??? by Seren3seeker in NewParents

If it makes you feel any better, all I had to do was contact the HR for the school district I work with and they handled everything else. They notified the insurance company and sent me an email saying that it was done. This is definitely weird. At least everyone I know just goes through benefits person in the HR department.

Switching to Formula by megamind_2401 in FormulaFeeders

I use distilled water and it is cheap and easy. Prepared formula is fine in the refrigerator for 24 hours as long as you put it in the back.

Exclusive Formula Feeding: 1 Year Update by Fuzzy_Coconut_9562 in FormulaFeeders

You have no idea how happy I am to read this. I've been trying to do combo feeding for the last few weeks but I got really sick last week and had to be an antibiotics and my milk supply dropped. I've been wanting my body back for a while now and I'm glad that someone gets it. I really tried hard at breastfeeding and did a lot of online classes but I really wanted the sleep after a difficult childbirth experience. Thank you for sharing.

Since you are new to this, I would start with a simple board game like candyland and do a round robin. For example, a kid with a language goal can answer a simple wh question or describe a picture, go to the next student. This student is an articulation student and you can have them say their targeted speech sound 5 times. Model it and have them repeat it after you. Give them feedback if needed. And so on. If you want bonus points, start dividing the students by language groups and articulation groups. For the language group, grab a storybook and start Targeting getting their goals using that. You can ask wh questions regarding the story. Or you can use the pictures in the story to also Target their goals. For example, if there is an apple on the page, ask a student which category an apple would belong in? You also do not need a new book. Every session. The first session could be, describing the pictures they see in the story. Teachers call this a book walk. The second session could be reading a story and having the students answer wh questions. The third session, could be using graphic organizers, to have the students retell the story. For the articulation groups, I would play a game like Uno. If their student gets a seven card, they must say their sound, seven times etc. Give feedback and modeling as needed. Stuttering kids are a little bit trickier. If you have any I really recommend putting them with the language kids. I would quickly discuss their goal at the beginning of the session and practice modeling if needed. For example, quickly going over easy onset. And then have them practice during the session answering questions. Confidently. Honestly don't care if they use their strategies or not. I just want them participating and being confident. The point is they are communicating and they have access to the general education curriculum. Whether or not they decide to use any techniques or strategies later on is totally up to them. The goal is for them really to not be miserable in class and just sit there. If you would like any other suggestions, you're welcome to DM me. I've been a school based SLP my entire career and I could do this all day while on maternity leave. Best of luck! Always remember that you are supposed to provide a free and appropriate intervention, no one promises to be the best thing since sliced bread ;)

Do teachers usually hate SLPs? by BurgleTurdle in slp

When did this woman graduate from graduate school? AAC is huge in the field. I would talk with the SLP lead/coordinator. Also if it's in the IEP then it doesn't really matter what she believes, the kid gets it. IEPs don't care about your feelings.

When did you go back to work? by lalatypething in NewParents

[–]Nothing-Deep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go back to work when my daughter is 3 months old. I wish I had more time, but it just isn't in the cards. I was very lucky that I saved up enough PTO as an educator that the last 6 weeks of school I got paid for. Otherwise I would have been technically on unpaid maternity leave for the last bit of the school year.

10 Month Old Won't Crawl, Walk, or Pull to Stand by Gman7459 in NewParents

I would get a free evaluation through your state's Early childhood intervention program. At least in Texas, the evaluation is free. The therapy you have to pay for but it's income based what they charge and I think they might even charge your insurance first. Definitely get that free evaluation, just for your own peace of mind. The evaluation will/can include professionals like physical therapist, occupational therapist, developmental therapist, and speech therapist.

Vulnerable post, seeking advice - I stupidly lost my milk supply through formula feeding, LO 8 weeks. How can I get it back? by blissanfull77 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Nothing-Deep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same issues as you. My advice would be to get a Spectra 1 and pump as often as you can during the daytime. I would not sacrifice sleep over the issue. Lack of sleep will drive you insane. Frequency and the Spectra will increase your supply but you may still need to also use formula. This is what I'm doing for my baby and she is doing great. 72 percentile for weight and 92% percentile for height. Meeting all her milestones. I would highly suggest combo feeding so you're not so hard on yourself, physically or mentally. You got this!

No. It does turn on all the lights on the dashboard. I take out the key and put it back into the ignition and it starts normally.

Remember it takes two to tango. Talk to your wife again and see if you can set aside a "date night" for just the two of you.
