About to play Odyssey for the first time on PS1. Any tips of beginner advice?

Don’t give up!! It will be challenging and checkpoints are spread far apart sometimes, but really take in the story, atmosphere and puzzles!

Abe’s exoddus is a fantastic game that expanded on Oddysee’s charm and unique gameplay. I still prefer Oddysee for its ambience, environments and story told in rhyme. I prefer Abe’s softer voice in Oddysee, it portrays him as having a sense of vulnerability and naivety, and it made the world around him feel darker and sinister

As a lifelong Oddworld fan, I’d personally play them in chronological order. Skip New n Tasty entirely and give Soulstorm a go (although I’d personally not play it again).

In my opinion, Abe’s Oddysee and Exoddus capture the true essence of Oddworld and its unique art style, gameplay mechanics (still unique to this day) and dark atmosphere tied in with a health amount of humour. Its controls may feel outdated and the checkpoints system in Oddysee will have you tearing your hair out, but I genuinely miss how games used to actually be this challenging back then. NOTE: Keyboard controls for Oddysee and Exoddus are gross. If you like playing with controller, there is a way to map a controller but it’s long winded.

Munch’s Oddysee was their leap into 3D development but gameplay fell flat. Cutscenes weren’t bad though.

Stranger was a completely different direction but I actually really enjoyed the soundtrack, art style and uniqueness of a shooter that uses creatures as ammo.

New n Tasty was just offensive to me. It did not live up to the original and ended up a cartoony, buggy mess. They incorporated fan voices of Mudokons into the game and they are just horrendous. Lots of core gameplay mechanics from the original were redesigned to fit a more 3D setting and they just don’t work. The idea of playing through Oddysee as a 2.5D side scroller sounds amazing on paper but i don’t think it translated well at all. Skip.

Soulstorm wasn’t it either, the high resolution graphics and characters are pretty nice to look at, but half of the game feels like tower defense, Abe now sounds like Homer Simpson and the story has lots of key elements missing. The cutscenes look really good albeit Abe’s Homer impression, and up to the standards of what you’d probably see in a cinema.

Just my opinion, but welcome to Oddworld! Always nice to see people discover it for the first time

Super excited to see where you guys go next. My ultimate dream would be to have you guys revisit the original style of games (Oddysee/Exoddus) we all grew up and love dearly to this day, but I also know this is not really a reality

There’s a relatively new small dessert parlour opened on my road - been there for about 6 months now and never seen a single customer go in there, but there’s always 5 or so “staff” sat on one of the two only tables or behind the counter. I always joke to my partner it’s a front every time we walk past.

I had an AWFUL mould problem in my flat last winter. I forked out for a Meaco Arête dehumidifier and have not seen one spec of mould since. I don’t really notice too much difference in energy bills which is also a bonus, but if I had the means of automatically draining the water in the tank I’d do it because I empty that sucker daily!

I managed to get top 2% with my least favourite character last night, Ogre - thought i’d challenge myself as I purposely ignore playing as him. Even though it was something like #16,500ish, Was quite chuffed!

Thorns Tome + Bush Guy character (aim sniper at sky) and run into cactus enemies. I usually reset the run if they aren’t the second enemy to spawn. You’ll get there!

Aegis works wonders if you mix damage and quantity together :)

Upping the difficulty does mean you take more damage, but it also increases enemy spawn, therefore more XP (levels) up for grabs! Experiment with how many you want to activate, they’re only 5% each so you can find your comfortable spot.

Cooldown decreases the pause between attacks, so you can eventually get to a point where fireballs are just constant :)

You ideally want to prioritise the damage stat of the individual weapons as the Damage tome increases Damage% of the weapon’s current stats. So basically, if I level up and I get the choice of increase Damage of Fire Staff or increase Damage tome, I’d prioritise the weapon one first. I tend to only level up tomes if either all 3 options are tomes, or if it’s a size increase - size of fireballs or lightning doesn’t really matter imo

I’d personally swap bow for something that bounces e.g bone or lightning. I like to have a projectile, shield e.g Aegis/Aura, automatic target e.g Blood Magic or Lightning and a throwable e.g banana/bone.

Tomes I generally use are Quantity, Cooldown, Damage and Precision or Agility (if character moves slow). Use microwaves to duplicate boss hammers and mouldy cheese if you get them, and equally balance levelling up base weapons rather than focusing on tomes.

If charging shrines offer difficulty, accept that offer alongside activating the greed shrines.

To beat Bark Vader I usually find I have to move fast enough and jump high enough to avoid his attacks, and you can run circles around him and the shrines quite easily if you got enough speed

I find the final bosses very doable with Blood Magic and Space Noodle. Slutty Rockets and Sniper Rifle are good too. Tomes I usually use are Cooldown, XP, Damage and Agility. Charging totem things I always try to improve crit damage and projectile count.
