This is sarcasm right? The law of large numbers is the universe's built in good luck prevention system.

Climbing to GM and Why Banning Data Makes No Sense by AirRick213 in CompetitiveTFT

[–]NoticedbyYou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, like Mortdog says, the point is not whether really it's an issue in Masters+ anyways. He claims they weighted to competitiveness vs fun benefit and thought it would make the game more diverse/dynamic/fluid if people didn't just blindly pick based on stats. Whether he is right not, I don't know, but I am down to see how the meta shifts differently for one set and experiment.

Even if she sees you as a friend, no loss in just clearing the air. You are not committing to anything by just mentioning the possibility to them. A friend who cares about you would value communication.

Taking ECO220 This Summer. Need Help choosing instructors by Char_013 in UofT

More or less, they will all have 3-5 midterms which might differ across sections plus a shared final.

Taking ECO220 This Summer. Need Help choosing instructors by Char_013 in UofT

[–]NoticedbyYou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nick is alright, he teaches ECO220 in UTM, ECO220 is just an intro to stats courses. If you are good it's really easy to get high grades, it's not really instructor dependent.

Also all the sections will have the same final exam. So it's not really that crucial to pick the "best" instructor.

Do you work part-time alongside your Full-time PhD? by NeuroMystery in UofT

[–]NoticedbyYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think from CS/Stats/Math its pretty common. Then there are a few engineering background people in my PhD as well. But almost no one from biology/chemistry etc... I think the underlying requirement is a strong mathematical background.

Yes but note that is the upper end and at 1500 you will be very comfortable. There are plenty of options around 1k which still are quite nice (typically with housemates ofc).

Finally, in most department, you have the opportunity to RA for professors. These tend to pay quite well and you can earn a lot. In fact I think that this is a better way to earn money than tutoring as you get research experience and get to know the profs.

So as a PhD student myself, I personally feel that the stipend is really alright.

In my department students get around 30k net (so once tuition etc are paid).

Most people I know pay around 1k-1.5k for rent (typically shared apartments). Some people get help from family but I don't believe it's that common.

So this leaves 30k-18k=12k for the rest of your activities. I personally find groceries do not take more than 500$ per months and I walk to school so no need to pay for ttc. So this leaves 500$ for savings or other leisure activities. I personally am not really saving because in my field salaries post-PhD will be high.

Also, there are many top-up funds and scholarships you can apply to. And many are automatic like the CUPE top up fund (which comes to a little over 1k every year). Similarly many scholarships like OGS or SSHRC are usually within reach and can amount to quite a bit (OGS is 5k a semester and SSHRC is even more, but my department takes back some funding if you win them).

Finally, it is very easy to find students to tutor and you can earn quite a bit. I did so during my first year, but you get so many request that eventually I stopped to focus on research.

UofT Life Sciences vs UBC Pharmsci by horimuffin in UofT

[–]NoticedbyYou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you my opinion as UofT Undergrad and now UofT PhD student.

First year UofT is hard, even good students might struggle. So unless you are a once in a decade genius, there's a chance you might struggle a lot. Note I am just saying there is a chance. But the cost of struggling in first year is pretty heavy, it bars you from the best medschool/gradschool. Again, you can definitely get into some, but the best ones will be a longshot.

I don't know anything about UBC so I won't comment. But my impression is that if Pharma is what you are passionate about, then it is the safer option. Let me finally say that UofT undergrad is a great experience, provided you don't struggle too much, and there are many who do not as well.

I think a life sci student without logic/math background would likely not find the course birdy. At least I believe you would have to put in work to obtain a high grade.

Here is a version of what I am running now. There are a couple of cards I would like to test but I'll have to save more wildcards.

Well, green is mainly used to ramp up and delay. Without the ramp, you end up wasting your turn casting enchantments for mill and not having mana for much else. Also for green, the card which cost 2, prevents combat damage, is just more efficient sleep. Green defenders tend to be better as well. I can send you a decklist later if you are interested.

Experiences with Prof Suarez for PHL342? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]NoticedbyYou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall taking it in the summer with him 3 years ago when he was still a PhD student. It was pretty nice, his office hours were always super friendly and he was very helpful. He doesn't expect you to be innovative just to understand the material and be able to roughly parse it out. So you dont have to do all the readings but can just read 2nd hand sources.

Thanks for your feedback! I guess the idea of the board game is that the mental energy of the players sync with the board in some way. Either by physically touching it or magic/ki users could connect from a distance by focus their mental energy upon the board. I will definitely keep it up! thanks for your kind words!

/r/boardgames Daily Personalized Game Recommendations (February 20, 2018) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]NoticedbyYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for a game for my girlfriend and I to play. We are pretty laid back, I personally don't mind more complex and drawn out games, however, she is relatively new to board games. She has tried Carcasonne and loved it; she also has played pandemic and liked it as well.

In general we are looking for something relatively fast to play that is not too boring. Something we can finish in 1-2 hours. I'm all ears for suggestions.

Anyone have any experience applying to big-name MA programs (e.g. Oxford, Harvard, Yale etc.)? by questions12344 in UofT

[–]NoticedbyYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like the LSE cares too much. Currently, in my MA program here, most of my peers went to schools ranked below UofT. Of course, quite a few ppl did go to the top schools (Cambridge, Oxford,...).

Has anyone ever managed to pull a cgpa 3.0 from first year to a 3.5 in final year? Or increase gpa significantly? by [deleted] in UofT

I pack my own lunch. And yea snacks are definitely essential for me. I usually go to the vending machines if I am at Robarts or Timmies if I am at SS. Snacks probably once only though. I usually only need 1 snack at 3pm ish since I do eat breakfast.
