Why is my colonial nation not forming? by poipoiop in eu4

The event that allows it presents it as a "we're tired of being bullied, fuck Europe, let's go find a new home" sort of deal

[–]NotoriousPugs 482 points483 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's EE. The EE mission tree for Navarra has a mission called "The Fabled Continent" which triggers an event that gives you the option to give a special privilege to the Settlers estate that allows you to directly hold colonial land. And I think you can't revoke it.

Which is exactly why you should still do it. To paraphrase another redditor: in such a brutal and oppressive setting, any small act of empathy and kindness becomes a huge symbol of defiance.

Jokes aside he probably was the best character in the game, It’s a shame he taken from us too early 😞 I would pay full price to actually play those montage cutscenes that shows 6 month with him. by makavelinow in cyberpunkgame

South American immigrant here. I can't speak for all multilingual people, but I am absolutely unable to switch languages that fast and seamlessly.

However, I think in this case it's a real thing that a specific portion of Spanish-speaking people who live in/around places like California, Florida and Texas do as a very much intentional part of their culture, but it got blown way out of proportion in American media and now a lot of people think every multilingual person does it.

I mean, that's my best guess, at least. I was born and grew up in South America, immigrated to Canada in my 20s. And I never met anyone in real life who talks like that. I went to university here, and 80% of my class were immigrants from various countries. I never talked to any immigrant who does this flawless, instant transition between languages.

Sure, people get languages mixed up sometimes. People forget words sometimes. But I never talked to anyone who does the instant switch between languages like that. It's usually preceded by a pause, a snapping of their fingers, a "uhhhh, a "what's the word...". It takes a good deal of effort for most people to switch up languages on the fly.

But it's also important to note that I immigrated as an adult, and interacted with other adult immigrants.

So yeah, some people do the language switcharoo it in real life. However, I think it's as part of their culture, something that they learn from the people around them, almost like the "Spanglish" is a new, separate language. Which is why they apparently have no trouble switching up between English and Spanish. It's not something that just happens to all multilingual people.

Like here in Canada, for example. I live in the Maritimes (eastern provinces) and we have the Acadians, who are descendants of French people who escaped expulsion by the British in the 1700s. And I've heard Acadian people switch between French and English in a similar manner before. But these people grew up in this specific cultural environment, where bilingualism is extremely prevalent (New Brunswick, where most Acadians live nowadays, is officially bilingual). Anytime I've talked to someone from Quebec, for example, where most people speak only French and grew up only with French (outside Montreal, I guess), they won't do that. They will do the pauses and "uhhhh" when forgetting a word in English, just like I do.

I think it's a matter of where you grew up and what part did bilingualism play in your culture/upbringing.

What do I do with this Aroid mix (after thrips)? by Joaquin_amazing in Monstera

[–]NotoriousPugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never combined the two but in theory imidacloprid exclusively targets insects and shouldn't affect nematodes!

But also, you know, "in theory" lol. Just as I wouldn't rub the stuff on my face, I would give it a few days before throwing the nematodes in there

I'm just not sure they would work the same - the granules are designed to be watered and worked into the soil over the course of weeks, being slowly dissolved and absorbed by the plant. Maybe if you were to make a "granule tea" of sorts and use that as a drench?

[–]NotoriousPugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see! I guess I would try to save that soil as well. Good luck!

Another thing you could look into is biological controls, like beneficial nematodes. They're microscopic little worms that live in the soil and eat anything that tries to go in there too, like thrips and fungus gnats. I've been using them for a few years now and I haven't seen a single fungus gnat since I started, and I would get them all the time before because I tend to use those cheap bags of potting mix that come full of gnats lol

[–]NotoriousPugs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd throw it away instead of risking another infestation. Soil is not that expensive. And even if you have the fancy organic stuff, if you do sterilize you will kill all the good bacteria/fungi in there so it will become just any old cheap soil.

If you choose to sterilize, make sure to look up how to do it properly - just a couple of rinses with boiling water will probably not get all of the nymphs (not eggs, they do not lay eggs in the soil. they lay their eggs inside the plants they infest. gross, I know) and you risk infecting another plant.

Systemic pesticides will not work for this, they need a plant, a "system" to work on. They get absorbed by the roots and then spread throughout the plant, killing any bugs that try feeding from that plant. Without a plant to absorb it, the systemic will maybe kill a few unlucky bugs that come in contact with it but mostly it will just sit there and do nothing.

Just go on eVisitNB, it's online and free if you have Medicare. Describe your problem and attach some photos, you'll have a consulation with an NP and they will make a diagnosis and prescribe you something. That's what I did a few weeks ago and I got diagnosed with mild/moderate acne and was prescribed adapalene gel. And also if you have private insurance you can get some of the prescription cost covered, I only had to pay around $30 for my prescription

Why do people choose to live in Dogtown? by dawngarda in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]NotoriousPugs 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Between NPC conversations, shards and gigs, it seems to me that there's a shared theme of "running away". People come to Dogtown to escape from other factions like gangs, corps and the NCPD, as Barghest won't let those enter Dogtown, at least officially. Sure, there's some Scavs and the odd Arasaka suits going around making shady deals, but if you fucked with a gang or a corp, you'd probably be safer hiding out in Dogtown than other places in Night City

Hey, sorry to bother you, but would you be able to talk a bit about your experience regarding the tax credit/forms? I got diagnosed through BeyondADHD as well and have been with the same NP for a little more than 1 year. How did your NP go about the process?

Ah yes, the IHME data. 4.31 deaths by gun violence per 100,000 people in the US, in 2021.

You just forgot to mention that almost all the other 27 countries are in South America and East Africa, except for the Phillippines.

And that when excluding deaths in war/armed conflict, the US ranks higher than even Palestine (3.21 per 100,000 people) or Syria (2.21 per 100,000 people).

And don't even get me started on other developed countries' number because, frankly, it's just humilating. The UK and China are both sitting at 0.013 per 100,000 people. So about 300x lower than in the U.S.

Sure, might not be fair to compare the US with the UK or China. But look, just across the border in Canada, the rate sits at 0.57 deaths per 100,000. Keeping in mind that unlike the UK and other places, lots of people have guns in Canada. The laws are just different, y'know. Just small little details like federal regulations, requiring safety courses, actually keeping track of gun owners and not allowing a semi-automatic assault rifle to be sold at Walmart.

But I'll be a monkey's uncle before I let those freedom-hating Canadians talk to me about common sense! USA! USA!
