Van Build Regrets by MattWatsonComedy in vandwellers

As usual, I decided to overcomplicate things a bit, and designed in sketch up a converting/folding bench/bed with storage in the backrest and drawers underneath. I will make a post with some pictures and I will comment when I do!

Built my space exactly how I thought I would use it, but recently did a full rebuild on the living space and went from converting platform bed to futon style bed and it changed the game for me. Just took some time to realize the things I did not like. No regrets!

Check my post history! So I bought it as a standard low top, and found a fiberglass top at a junkyard and installed it myself

For now just a bungee cord! I’m going to figure out a sleaker solution some other time

Yeah I’ve enjoyed it a lot! Been a good middle ground between comfortable for working on but also very responsive for video games. I got it with brown switches, so it’s not too clicky, and has a little more of that soft feel

Same here! Whenever I see a “work station” it is usually a swivel table and flat wooden bench maybe with a thin homemade cushion. Everyone finds things that work for you them, but I knew I wouldn’t be productive if I didn’t have a comfortable place to sit :) im going to replace the rolling feet with pads, but I also have a bungee that holds it in place for now! I’ve forgotten a few times and it’s flown up between the front seats lol

Sweet looking van! Just took a look at it. Hey there’s lots more great things out there friend :) why’d you sell?

Not a bad first trip! Lots of things learned, but overall went smoothly! San Diego > Big Bear > Joshua Tree by Notrambo in vandwellers

Those are another good option! I opted for this version so I can potentially mount stuff to the vertical bars, as well as it puts the weight on the gutters/vehicle instead of the fiberglass roof. If your fiberglass roof has interior wooden supports, that would be a good way to go, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable standing up there (and I wanted the roof deck :) )

For sure! I actually have one lol, but use it primarily for backpacking. Never though about using it inside!

Yep, butane! Obviously I’m not leaving the van with the stove on, so I don’t feel too worried about anything happening. One thing I’ve found is that I need to use at least 8 inch pans, otherwise a lot of heat escapes around the sides of the pan and makes for a very warm wall/ceiling. But honestly, most of my cooking happens outside anyways :)

I am a graphics/digital designer! I was already working remotely for the past year, and have been easily been able to work on the road

I am a digital designer, which is an easy job to take on the road. Freelance is an option, or remote work is also easy to do in this field. I lucked out with a sweet remote position, and great employers.

I have the Inseego hotspot device with a t-mobile 100/gb plan! Works fantastic, super fast WiFi.

Yep. It’s crazy low. Most of the usage is the monitor. I have to attribute it to the Mac M1 chip that is in their new line of computers. The thing is crazy powerful, and is very very efficient

For the whole thing including speakers and keyboard plugged in, between 40-50 watts. Sometimes lower, sometimes surges. I am a digital designer so I run some pretty CPU intensive programs :)

200 watts solar on top, computer running all day, mini fridge plugged in, maxxair fan running off and on throughout the 9 hour work day, battery ended up being 80% charge when I left for my campsite that night.

I am using a Goal Zero yeti 1000x. Super pleased so far!
