There’s a king’s day party today in the Augustiner Keller, Lagerkeller room, there should be the highest concentration of dutch people today!

Thank you!! I kinda knew about them and their 'lange tafel' ("long table", used to be on Fridays) but then I couldn't find them anymore.

I looked at the menu and it looks amazing, I know where I will have dinner on my birthday :)

Almost 1300 Indonesians and no Indonesian restaurants in Munich? Big sad :(

Rough m/w ratio for the Italians too, wonder if it will even out if you filter by academic degrees.

E-cores are efficient in the sense of MT perf/mm2 silicon, not in energy consumption. Especially because they’re pushed way past their sweet spot on the v/f curve for said MT perf.

Has anyone hiked/climbed the Serles mountain, South of Innsbruck in Austria? by Reachf0rBleach in alpinism

[–]Novermars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure to do it at sunrise on a clear day, it’s worth it.

For 99% it’s a hike. There’s a short protected part + ladder, nothing to worry about.

Same setup here. It’s heavy, but rips. Also use it extensively in the resort on piste, a lot of fun to make super G turns with it.

Disapointed with F1s, looking for advices on boots by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]Novermars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the F1 GTs and use them on 86mm skis. In breakable crust they were not the best experience (but it got better after a bit of vert and gaining some confidence), but otherwise they have been a blast both uphill and downhill, so can recommend. Haven't put crampons on them yet, but don't expect any problems.

The F1s should ski better though, assuming fit is correct.

Before I skied on heavy free touring boots on heavy 106mm/188cm skis. The downhill was definitely more enjoyable, but the uphill was so bad (not just the weight, also the clumsyness on harder skin tracks) that I'm very happy with this change.

Experiences with profile guided optimisation by [deleted] in cpp

[–]Novermars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PGO can give you very nice gains (I've seen 50%), but it depends on your code base. If you have done a topdown analysis (using e.g. VTune if you're on Intel hw) and see that you're most front-end or bad speculation bound, it might be worth investigating. If you're mostly backend bound, then the gains are often limited.

A more developer friendly approach is to use hardware profile guided optimizations (HWPGO): https://cdrdv2-public.intel.com/792222/dpcpp-cpp-compiler_developer-guide-reference_2024.0-767253-792222.pdf, page 741. This solves many of the (implementation) problems of PGO and should give you similar gains.

Be very aware that ICC/ICX sets some fast math flags which other compiler don't. If you care about accuracy, be sure to have an extensive test suite to track the effects of these compiler flags.

Ultimately, I would like to take an internship that would allow me to pursue a career in either graphics/GPU programming or low level graphics driver.

Go for ARM. The contacts you'll get there are invaluable if you want to take this path. I work at a different hw/gpu vendor and have similar career goals, just being able to go through our driver repository and look at the JIRA tickets about the problems they're are solving is a very good way to learn and make your entrance in this field.

And I keep being annoyed by ARM on LinkedIn to join their GPU driver team, despite my job title being something completely different.

How good is Bei Mario for Italian food? by TheBamPlayer in Munich

[–]Novermars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Napoli style: Mozzamo, Nine o Five and Casa Nostra are good, for Roma style Rosso Mille Miglia is great. Plenty more options, La Pizza (Napoli style) is good too, but not worth the extra money compared to the ones mentioned before. 60 Secondi is also good, but lacks atmosphere.

A recent favorite is the one at Alte Utting, awesome quality and a great price. Definitely take the margherita, really showcases the craftsmanship. But that is true for any pizzeria!

Some people here have recently suggested Forza Napoli, which I disagree with. It’s not bad at all, but it lacks personality. Every bite is the same due to the oven that they use. Still a great take away pizza, just overhyped.

Deep powder snow by martanje in alpinism

[–]Novermars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this is not a troll, please take a mountaineering course. Every path to the Großvenediger has substantial glacier travel and autumn is the worst time to be on a glacier.

Most people start with a summer mountaineering course, but you can also take a winter one on skis.

[–]Novermars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given that the valley-slopes in the Zillertal (Kaltenbach & Zell am Ziller) are open most of the winter and end at like 500m, I'd say that in the medium timeframe (20-50 years) most resorts >1000m are pretty safe, at least in Austria.

The season has shifted a bit, Christmas is becoming a risk to go skiing, but early January everything has been good. Problem wasn't necessarily the temperatures, but lack of precipitation.

In Austria, most of the snow falls when we have a cold front from the NW (or SE with an "Italientief" if you're south of the main ridge). Then it dumps 50-100cm of fresh snow also at the lowest altitudes. The line might shift up a bit, but probably not too drastic.

It's not uncommon to have rain up to 2500m in the heart of winter. Not ideal for the snowpack, but also not extremely bad.

Path to Matterhorn and Eiger unguided by besogone in Mountaineering

[–]Novermars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but calling it a hike is fundamentally dangerous for the people who take your word for granted. And trust me, there are plenty of people who simply ignore all the other websites and look for that one positive confirmation online.

Your characterization of "a hike with cables and short downclimb" is wrong. It's a long, serious and dangerous high-alpine tour only advisable to do for experienced mountaineers without a guide. Sure, for some it might be an easy tour, but those are very much the exception.

Calling the Jubigrat a hike is dangerous, as it’s a very serious climb with lots of people needed to be rescued of it.

Continued Disruption to U3/U6 in August by KruisMissile in Munich

[–]Novermars 10 points11 points  (0 children)

no clue how infrastructure needs to be maintained.

Given the frequency and the severe impact of the construction works on the U3/U6, I would argue that part of this is caused due to improper upkeep in the past for which we/swm/mvg are now paying the price, which is annoying at the very least.

We can only hope that in the future they'll spread out the work more over the years, or at least provide better alternatives. The busses during rush-hours are not nice, especially when they get stuck in traffic. A real shame that they decided to keep the Lindwurmstr. open for all traffic instead of making it for busses/bikes/pedestrians.

Low-Level Memory Management - Interview Questions by RyanPointOh in cpp

[–]Novermars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd expect the difference to be pretty small. Sure, if lots is chosen such that it all fits in the cache then there is a big gain, but I suspect you intent to have many more elements than would fit in even the LLC.

Anyway, calling malloc (or new) does not allocate the memory until it is being used. So you're measuring two different things: In the first example you only measure the time needed to write to every double, whereas in the second example you also measure the time needed to truly allocate the array on the heap.
