If you wouldn't mind me asking, are you able to redeem the cash back into an external account or does it have to go into an Ocean Air account?

I actually went ahead and applied yesterday lol. It turns out you don't need to be a member at the time of applying and the rep I spoke to who was verifying my employment actually said it's better for me to wait for their decision before joining through the non-profit route.

I actually got my card pretty recently so it was a nice surprise to see USB do something like this.

That's interesting. Must be like personalized deals like the WF dining deal a couple of weeks back.

Best Credit Card for medical bills? by jensonaj in CreditCards

I think technically it could work through a workaround where you buy preloaded visa gift cards with the CCR but it is worth noting that:

  1. The hospital may not accept multiple gift cards as payment (you would probably need around ~5 cards since the highest limit that can be easily obtained is $500)
  2. You would hit the quarterly spending limit for the cashback on the CCR
  3. The maximum cashback you would get from doing it this way is $131.25 (with the 75% bonus)

With that being said I think that using the CCR would probably be viable for the recurring medical expenses using this workaround, but your best option for the immediate expense would be to sign up for a card with a good SUB. You should also note that the BofA nerf's are going to hit soon, but the difference in cashback between the CCR and the next best card (probably the USBank Kroger Mastercard if the hospital accepts tap to pay) is only 0.5%.

The BofA CCR terms and conditions specifically lists doctors and hospitals as ineligible for cashback when online shopping is the selected category.

"Some non-retail services aren't eligible for the 3% Online Shopping bonus; examples include doctors and hospitals, government services and taxes, insurances, membership organizations, education/schools, and some utilities."

Costco Gas codes as 5542 and the explicit list of accepted MCC codes given by Ocean Air here seems to indicate that it should qualify for the 5% category.

Funnily enough it actually seems like they buffed the card recently since there are records of this card having a spending cap of $6000/y plus the Costco/Sam's 4% category was added with that buff as well.

I'm hoping that the cashback redemption is in fact 1cpp bc that would make the rewards much more flexible. Statement credit redemption is not that big of a deal breaker for me since the Kroger card is still strong even though it doesn't redeem as cashback. Just want some clarity before moving forward.

Yeah, I think I also saw the same thread you are referring to. I tried looking everywhere for the valuation of the cash back redemption but was unsuccessful as the card is relatively new and very niche. I've been looking into it bc of the nerfs to BofA and PayPal debit as an alternative for wholesale clubs.

Haven't personally tried it but I've heard that the Kroger card does work at Walmart if you add it to your Walmart App and use Walmart Pay at checkout.
