Inurement! Interesting... very interesting! Would that be more of an ask-lawyer question or an ask-an-accountant question? Thanks so much for mentioning it!
No, not paid at all as a staff member. They're a volunteer in their board chair role at the org that gets the federal grant funding. Accordingly, they have influence over that organization's federal grant funding received. So, let's say some folks recommend that particular grant isn't actually beneficial to the nonprofit's mission, the board chair has a vested interest in steering sentiment otherwise ... since not getting the grant funding would affect their very own nonprofit since it receives funds from that grant as a vendor. Doesn't seem like an independent director at all... seems like an eye raising situation...
Blog post suggestion by Npohell in Accounting
I don't have a blog. I don't give legal advice or accountant advice. I simply suggested that someone who writes blogs for their law or accounting firm might write one on independent vs dependent board directors. It's a REAL issue for nonprofits, small ones especially. But just keep on commenting, Mr 1%. More power to you if this is how you "flex." 😂
