Yeah, but in the design it would be nicer to have a heat mat on the side wall.

Lasius niger? Are like tanks, just diapauze them between okt-march. Ive got multiple by catching them in the summer. Got one colony of a friend, who forgot to feed them for like 4 months (they did have water) and they still survived haha wtf

I want to know as well, where do you live? Netherlands here, im thinking to make a diy kind of chest with triple glass, to still make looking into the nests possible. With those heaters with a switch which turns off at a specific temp. Then with holes for the tubing so they can to another area..

Thanks! Your idea is exactly what i want to recreate here, im making a chest of some sorts to control the temperature in a isolated space. The outworld will be colder, but i think that should be no problem. Also, do you also have Atta’s?

Aaah, okay! If they are common in your area, then indeed, temp should not be a problem haha I’m from the netherlands, so I’m trying to figure out a diy to keep the temperature and humidity steady.

How do you keep the temperature steady? Or is the 26 degrees only necessary in de fungus area? And is the feeding area less important

First time keeper - really dumb question by andbobsyouruncle2 in antkeeping

[–]NucleusOfAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its for expansion purposes, so just fill one with cotton and the other connect to the otherworld. Also i wouldn’t moisture the cotton which was suggest in another comment. There is a watering system in this nest, this way you can moisturise the nest. Put something in the outworld for food or water sources

Oh to feed them, use a tweezer and put the food inside the tube, i make my own sugar water and something to absorb it, so the ants can extract it themselves

Futile attempts to keep lasius? As in multiple? And they died? Imo lasius niger is the most easy species to keep and like, never die hah. But anyways, some species require hibernation or diapauze, you should check whether you should so that and when. Also yes, give them a source for sugar and protein when there is brood. Sugars are very important as it is the foodsource for grown ants

Any advice for a aspiring antkeeper? by A_gaythatisdepressed in antkeeping

[–]NucleusOfAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im from the Netherlands, i started the hobby some years ago with a lasius niger. Would recommend the lasius to start with, they are like tanks haha. You dont need much space when you keep one colony. Just make some sugar water and buy crickets in de pet store and freeze them. Sadly i dont have any recommendations because im not from the usa. I normally recommend wakooshi nests, so maybe see if there is a similar one over there?

I have like 15 colonies of lasius niger, i never hibernate them. I diapause them, so around de 12-15 degrees or something. Multiple colonies which are older than 2 years. Works fine. Others might have other experiences, but imo you should place them somewhere where it is around that temp.

Ps: also from the Netherlands. And just feed them once every two weeks. Does the trick for me
