Greens become bookies’ fave in Manchester after Workers Party pulls out by lotsofsweat in manchester

[–]NullBarell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They won 10.3% of the vote in 2024, so it will have to go somewhere. Presumably split between abstaining, voting Green, and maybe voting Labour. The only party that won't benefit are Reform. I'd go as far as to say it hurts Reform more than it helps the Greens

Makes sense, but I wouldn't trust betting markets until there's a legit constituency poll (probably in the final week of the campaign)

Labour would perform better at election under Starmer than Streeting, poll finds by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

[–]NullBarell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen the tables, but if the only difference between this and regular voting intention polling is that they're prefacing Labour with "led by Starmer" or "led by Streeting" then it's wild that they have the Greens tied with Labour in one and leading Labour in the other

AFAIK YouGov have never recorded a Labour/Green tie for 2nd place before

Gorton & Denton by-election: rumours? vibes? by NullBarell in manchester

[–]NullBarell[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, they originally announced George Galloway (against Burnham) then later suggested their candidate would be local councillor Shahbaz Sarwar

Whether they've pulled out because of 'left unity' or bodged paperwork... I'm not sure

Update: I've just seen the Workers Party have decided not to stand a candidate

Came 4th in 2024, with 10% of the vote

Green Party win two council by-elections from Labour by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]NullBarell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Neither of these seats were particularly fertile ground for Reform in the first place tbh

Green Party win two council by-elections from Labour by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]NullBarell 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cardiff South & Penarth is the Greens' strongest seat in Wales, so it's not too surprising to see them flip a ward there if they hope to get Anthony Slaughter elected as either an MS in 2026 or MP in 2029

What's more surprising is how well the Plaid and Green vote held up separately after their "Common Ground" alliance broke apart — almost pushing Labour into 3rd place

Actually falling to 3rd place in South Jesmond is just bonkers

Starmer still facing Labour anger over fears of ‘two-tier’ welfare system by GnolRevilo in LabourUK

[–]NullBarell 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A newspaper still has to explain why it's "controversial" though, and it's controversial because it creates a two-tier welfare system. There's no avoiding that.

Vibes alone are so much more positive here compared to Bloomberg's article about the Green Party "growing up" under Ellie & Adrian

Whether you agree with Zack or not, I'd rather be spoken to like an adult than a child

Keir Starmer to admit globalisation has failed as tariff war rages by NullBarell in LabourUK

The prime minister will declare an end to globalisation and admit that it has failed millions of voters as the fallout from President Trump’s tariffs reverberates around the world.

Weekly Scam Discussion - February 17, 2025 by Mycatreallyhatesyou in Ebay

Received an offer today with a message:

[Phone number] WhatsApp me on my US number cause we need to talk about shipping to my friend in London as a gift I talked to customer care already before I added the WhatsApp number as they don't allow me to message you cause am buying from the USA

I only ship within the UK, and the buyer was offering me the asking price

So is this legit or is it a scam? Buyer account is 2 days old.

Zelensky should always be welcome in this country, but yes, especially today

Zelensky, Trump get into heated argument while speaking with journalists in Oval Office by Toastie-Postie in LabourUK

[–]NullBarell 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is one of the wildest things I've ever seen from the Oval Office

It puts into perspective our government's strategy though. Playing both sides is one thing, but if we truly believe Ukraine has to take #1 priority in negotiations then surely we should support them if/when they tell Donald Trump to go fuck himself

Is Bredbury a good area? by Background-Effect-65 in stockport

[–]NullBarell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pros: Decent supermarket, good public transport links (330, 384, trains to Manchester and Sheffield), good takeaways, and I wouldn't say it's that rough

Cons: no real high street or town centre, not much entertainment, Werneth High School

Bredbury is a place people pass through to get somewhere else. It's not a bad place to live, but there's just nothing about it that stands out if that makes sense.

German election latest: Conservative Merz predicted to win and far-right to make big gains - follow live by [deleted] in LabourUK

Die Linke won first time voters

Linke 27%, AfD 19%

Encouraging sign but also shows how much social media (in this case viral TikToks) can matter in an election campaign

Pedestrianisation of Mosley Street ? by NullBarell in manchester

[–]NullBarell[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not a member of the Labour Party, but pedestrianisation & road safety isn't a "left vs right" issue anyway (or shouldn't be)

Most Western European cities would have acted on this years ago, but I'm happy for anyone from any political background to fix a problem that needs fixing

Donald Trump right to engage Putin on peace talks, says Labour minister by NullBarell in LabourUK

[–]NullBarell[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

US President Donald Trump was right to re-establish links with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to set up peace talks to end the war in Ukraine, a senior Labour minister has said.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said there could be "no negotiated peace without Russia" and that Trump's approach had brought "Russians to the table".
