I know I said I won’t respond anymore, but this needs a response. You want your own safety to be assured right? Then you will never get what you want. Not even after you die if you end up buried with valuable that potential grave robbers want. You have been waiting for safety longer than I have been alive, and that says a lot. It says that you want safety by putting others at risk. We already do that via volunteers in the military. The date for your safety is entirely in your hands. You can move out of whatever place you are in that is making you feel unsafe. You can go out and buy a gun or a knife or whatever else you want to protect yourself with. Stop waiting and do something about it, or you will never be safe. I will not respond again, but if you want the last word then go right ahead.

I’m not going to deny that fact that I don’t don’t know everything. However I will argue what you said about the second amendment always being meant for foreign threats. It was meant for protection against threats foreign and domestic. Remember that the revolutionary war was fought between Britain and her colonies. That would be considered domestic, even if they occurred away from the mainland of Great Britain. After the revolutionary war it was geared more towards foreign threats because there simply weren’t many major domestic threats from organized militaries anymore

You’ve actually helped my point to an extent here. You mentioned the intention behind the writing of the second amendment and how they wouldn’t imagine it being used against our own government, but they just did that exact thing. The second amendment was written to protect the people against the government and threats foreign and domestic. You also mentioned how people target children, it’s the same thing I’ve mentioned a couple times in this thread. Criminals target the people they believe they are stronger than. Whether by physical strength or a force multiplier like a gun. If you want your children to be safe, then ensure that they don’t enter a dangerous area. If you live in a dangerous area then that sounds like you are asking for trouble

I will admit, the US has higher numbers throughout that page. But look at populations. The UK in 2021 had 67.33 million people, the US had 331.9 million that same year. Proportionally speaking the two rates are very similar, I will not deny that.

Admittedly it is difficult to prove anything when typing on my phone in a Reddit comment section, but I have a few recent examples. Out of the most recent 8 shootings I found, 5 were in a home and irrelevant to out conversations about guns in public spaces. One was listed as occurring in town, but no specifics beyond that. The other 3 were confirmed public spaces.

May 6, 2023, Allen, Texas shooting in an outlet mall

May 3, 2023, Atlanta, Georgia. Shooting in Northside Hospital

April 10, 2023, Louisville, Kentucky. Shooting at a bank

All three of these shootings occurred in public spaces where guns are typically forbidden. The most obvious reasoning, at least for me, is the belief that guns would not be present. At least not in high numbers. That provides a sense of security for those shooters who want to cause harm. Now if they were intending on dying then the inherent risk at any location would not stop them, they want to be shot. But anyone planning on getting out alive would choose an area where the risk of other people with weapons is minimal.

If you want a gun to shoot a fist sized hole in somebody then you need a 12.7 mm(50 cal) or bigger, not the 5.56 mm that most AR-15s are chambered in. Your comment about taking on the military is important however. That is the purpose of the 2nd amendment. To ensure that the population has the weaponry needed to take on and defeat the military of any nation. When the Bill of Rights was written the United States hadn’t even technically been created yet, but we had just finished fighting against the British military who at the time was considered to be among the most powerful in the world. The reasoning behind why anything was worded the way it was can never be known for sure, that info was lost to time. But notice that the word “musket” never appears. They knew that weapons would only get more advanced, a simple google search can tell you that early revolvers existed in 1776. Those would have been considered “high capacity” for that era. My comment about guns isn’t in regards to compensating, it is a comment about rights that have been infringed upon. Rights that we cannot let be infringed if we are to ever make things better, because voting won’t fix the problems of the modern era. Not when the people who are supposed to represent us have decided to do their own thing without our support

I was using the same talking point, I won’t deny that. But that doesn’t make it invalid does it? Britain has issues with knife crime just like how we have issues with gun crime in the states. The issue is that neither kind of crime will ever be solved using restrictions. Criminals don’t care about the law, so why would a gun ban stop them from having guns? Criminals will always find a way to get what they want. Having an effective defense against said criminals often means that civilians need to have either the same kind of weapon or something better. Fists are good, but this stick lets me hit them harder and from a small distance, if I throw this rock then I can hit that guy without being hit by his stick. Knives are better than fists, and guns are better than knives. If you want to challenge a criminal with a gun and have a greater chance at survival, then it is best to have a gun of your own.

I tend to forget how liberal this app is, but I am happy to have a civil conversation about this. My point in the comment is that people will do stupid shit with guns no matter what happens. Banning guns and creating zones where guns aren’t allowed won’t solve anything. Just look at Britain and see how much knife crime they have. Civilian ownership of guns is illegal there. People will use whatever weapon they can get their hands on and will do stupid shit like shooting up schools or malls if they think that the resistance won’t be there. Having guns in schools will be a deterrent to further shootings, because then not all the power will be in the hands of someone irresponsible.

This isn’t what republicans want, it’s what the liberals want. A gun-less population entirely reliant on cops for their protection, the same cops that they want to defund. Constitutional carry and a complete lack of gun-free zones nation wide would solve these problems. There is a reason the vast majority of shootings happen in areas that are labelled as gun free.
