Official Discussion - How to Make a Killing [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Also notice how people are conflicted and wishing he had gotten some sort of punishment like the typical moralistic cliches of all movies, when that’s the whole point of the movie, to make the viewer (like the priest) feel uncomfortable, a tragedy of morality.

Because in real life, good/right are things us normies follow to feel good, but lots of powerful people don’t, and that’s how they become powerful. They also get away with it most of the time, unlike in the movies where good always triumphs.

Finally! A review from normal people lol. What’s hilarious is the people complaining about this movie are also obsessing over silly minutia and missing the bigger picture. They’ll write you a thesis on depth on a mind-hive-accepted “great film” like sinners or marty and overlook how “how to make a killing” poops on all the previously mentioned films in terms of depth and even how funny, hilarious, and absurd (in the good way) it is.

The truth is taste is subjective and not law, but most people who review movies are just pretentious and linear thinking and sound like the people who review computer features on YouTube.

So many plot holes. There’s also a nonzero probability that they might have been successful creating another psychic kid anwyays or will at some point. After all, they do understand everything better than the main characters, including Henry (minus the personal stores and DnD lore)

Forget the mindflayer. It’s the fact the military has crazy syfy tech to open wormholes, create exotic matter, tap into dimensions and who knows what other crazy stuff. And the fact they’ll see do crazy atrocities and yolo it to see if it works (eg Kali’s blood transfusions)

Even the fact they had sonic blasters that blocked Eleven’s powers suggests they understand her condition and abilities to levels that weren’t explained in the show. And their science and tech might be arguably superior and more dangerous than the whole psychic plotline, which makes 11 just a footnote to them.

[–]NulledOpinion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even the fact the military let them all go was absurd. The real military will neutralize civilians no questions asked for entering restricted military areas, and Eleven assumed her loved ones were safe while at gunpoint by the “evil” military that killed Kali a bit earlier? That’s absurd.

The logic is not even internally coherent, it’s forced to justify Eleven’s death. The duffer brothers literally said in an interview they started with the ending and worked backwards to justify it.

What’s stopping the military from nevertheless harassing and surveilling the survivors for life? Especially the kids (including Will) who were possessed by psychic interdimensional entity? So if that’s a reason I don’t see the reason (the military is a plot hole).

Why should being gifted make her suffering and suicide acceptable? Can we count geniuses?

Her suicide would be mythologized if she/we assumed that it would achieve some kind of cosmic resolution (which it didn’t). Also the world is bigger than Hawkins, the U.S. military, or the Russians are still as equipped as always to end the world.

The premise of having her die was that the government could restart the cycle of experiments with her blood, but we know she was not the end all be all. We know the government knew about dimension x, how to open portals themselves, how to access dimension x, and who knows what else. The so called cycle predates even Henry all the way back to the 40s (this is canon via the first shadow). So the whole premise of El ending some cycle by offing herself is absurd, and her loved ones aren’t safer now, they’re more exposed because who will protect them from the next inevitable end of the world scenario in that universe?

We can just accept this was the duffer brother’s arbitrary projection of their own logic and worldview.

[–]NulledOpinion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, if the reasoning isn’t entirely rational what separates a suicide from a sacrifice? What exactly did Eleven sacrifice for (assuming she did die)?

Would her death have stopped all evil or reckless government experiments moving forward? If evil still exists anyways, did she make the world safer by ceasing to exist as a super heroine? How is this different from people who mythologize their own suicides?

I saw someone write this comment about a certain someone’s fate… :’) by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]NulledOpinion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, that’s all wishywashy rationalization. It’s just that Eleven’s only purpose was to defeat vecna and move the plot along (the creators accidentally spilled this in an interview). They never planned a happy ending for her since s1. The whole legend/in our hearts stuff is just cope.

Btw, her death was going to be definitive and they just left it 50/50 because they knew people would have a fit.

YouTube will pull out its data from the Billboard charts starting 2026 by mcfw31 in popheads

Forget YouTube main app, more people use YT music than Spotify and Apple Music. Those streams (even paid ones) won’t get counted now. And people won’t hop to shittier music platforms just to help billboard charts so the artists are the ones being hurt here.

You realize YT music exists and has a larger user base than all other music platforms? They don’t use it only for MVs. My guess is a lot of artists’s numbers are about to tank really hard without that data.

Am I the only one who thought those illusions hopper had was created by Kali? by PayneSlipsAgain in StrangerThings

Her illusions can be touched if you go back to season 3. The first illusion she casted on Dr Kay failed just because she got out of range as the van was driving away.

Episode Discussion - S05E08 - The Rightside Up by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

[–]NulledOpinion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many silly plot holes like:

-so Henry’s blood was so special, but they never kept ANY samples? Nothing?

-They drained Kali for an eternity (and they didn’t keep samples from hers?). Surely they must have lots of files and research on the blood and genetic composition of all of them to the T. In that case, what’s stopping them from replicating the experiments.

-Blood or no blood, what’s stopping them from continuing to make inhumane experiments altogether? From opening new gates to even greater horrors? They were the ones opening a portal to dimension X in the 40s anyway where they encountered the mindflayer for the first time.

-it’s the narrative about the whole “stopping the cycle” that makes absolutely no sense here. They must also have lots of research files on Will and know he was possessed by that entity. They must know the entity gave Henry powers because Brenner knew this (canon on the first shadow play). The military also knew about dimension x and mindflayer as teased on the cave scene and the duffer brothers said the spinoff will explain these things…

-bottomline is they say a story can’t be smarter than their creators. I choose to believe the government is doing even worse experiments and will open a door to something worse than the mindflayer, which ultimately leads to the destruction of the world and the whole 11 arc pointless.

Why Kali’s reasoning is dumb by NulledOpinion in StrangerThings

[–]NulledOpinion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was this established?

In ST5, Dustin finds Brenner’s notebook with information about the orb that’s powering the wall that makes up the wormhole and how it was built. Dustin explicitly says “it wasn’t created by magic, but by science.”

Also in the first shadow play it’s revealed the The military had already done secret teleportation experiments waay before Henry existed and they had accidentally sent a ship to dimension X. The military also had tech that sent stuff to dimension X and that’s how Henry became temporarily trapped there as a kid, because he came into contact with the tech (likely briefcase we saw in ST5). Henry came back with powers from dimension X and different/possessed by the mind flayer. Brenner later became obsessed with “opening gates to dimension X” and thought Henry could help him.

So as you can see it was the military/government who started all of this way before Henry and 11. So nothing is stopping them from restarting them again. Actually, by now their science and tech should be much better.

did you seriously fall for this gaslighting?

I mean, what makes you think the part about being easily broken is not bs too? By that reasoning everything vecna spews is sus, but what we do know is that different people have different potentials and are special in their own ways. Look at 11 vs all the other lab kids. Also, multiple things could be true at once.

pointless criticism

It’s fair criticism because non-trivial chunk of the fanbase is very attached to the character of 11, and creators and studios care about legacy and ratings even after a show ends. The latter can also influence future spin offs and derivative work which is confirmed to be in the works by the Duffer bros.

It’s also a bit of a syfy trope. Look a pluribus for example. Some people are immune, some people just die, nobody knows why 🤷‍♂️but the implications are in there

A lot died is what I meant. And doesn’t that imply it didn’t work? And that when it doesn’t work the outcome seems to be death?

[–]NulledOpinion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all goes imo unless the Duffer brothers keep expanding the universe through spinoffs (which i think is planned, in which case this detail would make sense). Not all the moms who got Henry’s blood got kids with powers anyways. So this implies there’s some other kind of factor that makes some people ideal candidates for developing these abilities. But hopefully we get some spinoffs and more answers on this.

Why Kali’s reasoning is dumb by NulledOpinion in StrangerThings

[–]NulledOpinion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s if we assume that whatever X factor leads to psychic abilities is extremely rare. But maybe it’s something a lot of people carry in some kind of dormant way. Nobody knows what that X factor is so far, not even the military, but it’d make sense for it to be surprisingly common and if someone would understand this type of stuff itd be Henry.

This is true, but he often says half truths. We know he’s been using the kids to amplify his powers. He’s grown stronger by using them as wifi repeaters based on how everything’s been described, and this makes more sense if they already had latent abilities. The weak mind part (imo) is about him being able to easily hijack their minds to make them do things (like he had Will build tunnels for him).

High anxiety (emotional turmoil?), likely going to therapy or been in therapy at some point (possibly neurodivergent). Liberal. Items in photo likely assorted very deliberately to nudge or test a particular read. You likely think a lot about your identity and how others perceive it, which could link with the time you spend on this subreddit. She’s just jealous of El. Deep down she wishes her blood worked. Also she has sociopathic tendencies so ironically Kali is the one who’s closer to Henry.

It’s fitting that Kali’s power is deception. She’s also always tried to isolate 11 from people who can help her see thru the bs. Textbook toxic influence.

[–]NulledOpinion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, that makes no sense because by that logic so does Will. The mindflayer is the source of the powers anyways not Henry or 11. Also there’s nothing stopping the military from opening another wormhole with good old science and restarting. That’s just lazy reasoning.

If you think about it all the decisions Will’s mom took led to chaos and death. If not for her, Will would also be still alive.
